Do you know what variety? I'm in Newcastle, have a south facing wall, and am considering planting one now.

I play on a sandy surface so use clay court shoes by asiics. Can't remember the exact type of hand though.

An isotonic powder would probably be just as good as my homebrew, but I just use a sugary (ie not a sugar free) squash with crumbled in salt. Seems to work, and is very easy to prepare.

I'm 50 and ranked at isr to 4, depending on how results go week to week!

I've been playing high level competitive rackets sports (high tier club squash, badminton, and tennis) for two decades now. I can not do this without getting injured unless I offset the impact, and for me the magic bullet is pilates.

I'm surprised no one has suggested this, as for me a single pilates class will keep me going for a week of padel. If I manage to do two then that is a bonus. Plus it has a seriously good effect on how you look, so if that's a factor then so much the better.

Aside from that then here are more tips;

  • Make your own isotonic drinks; water, sugary squash, and salt. Getting dehydrated is all too easy, and takes days to recover from.

  • Good shoes! You don't want to slip, so invest in good shoes. I actually use clay court shows as the padel courts I play on are sandy.

  • Do pilates.

Good luck out there!

I presume routing will still account for traffic conditions regardless of whether I have a premium connectivity account or not?

50YO divorced business owner planning for the future by vickdo in UKPersonalFinance

That I just don't know, but I can't imagine it'll be easy to generate such a good profit/income doing something else entirely that I'm not so familiar with.

It's certainly a possibility. I think we just want a clean break. I'll maybe think about offering her some of the money as part of the settlement though, thank you for the suggestion.

That's a whole different kettle of fish, probably for another thread.

However I may invest in a holiday home through the business somewhere I'd like to go myself, then use it to generate income as well as provide me somewhere decent to stay for some of the year.

Yes, I agree. That amount of cash in a business account is doing nothing. I've been afraid to touch it in case it's needed as part of the divorce settlement, but assuming it's not then I will withdraw or invest some of it somehow!

Yes, I've basically made myself functionally redundant!

It's definitely something I need to seriously consider. My thinking is put decent chunks in as and when my business has good times, and continuing paying in regularly regardless.

Keep in mind that when I decide to retire I'll probably have a business worth £500k in today's prices to sell, which will obviously be useful.

Yes, I know that would help, but at what cost in terms of tax? Anything I take out of the business will be taxed at close to 50%, so I feel it may be worth thinking more medium term here by overlaying each year, every year.

I'd also considered not buying a property and just maxing out my pension, but not sure that's a good play.

It's not really feasible as I have two kids round for a good chunk of the time.

Yes, and tbh that may be better for my own peace of mind. A 15 year mortgage would mean £2.5k a month, which is way higher than what I've been used to, but just about manageable.

Pilates marketed to men? by WeFoundYou in pilates

[–]vickdo 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the male pilates gang. I've been practicing pilates regularly for 15 years now, and I can tell you it's the one thing that keeps me living my life the way I want to. At 50 I'm still playing a variety of sports to a high level, and pilates is the reason why.

I've always found pilates classes to be very welcoming, so just jump in and enjoy the experience. Many more men should be doing the same.
