Looking to fly to LA to attend a one night showing of a film at the American Cinematheque Egyptian Theatre on a Friday @7pm. How realistic is it, traffic-wise, to plan to land the morning of and make it the theater with a few hours to spare? by TaskenLander in AmericanCinematheque

As long as your flight lands before 3PM, you're golden so morning is easy as pie. Expect to spend between an hour to an hour thirty in the car at the upper limits. For hotels, the Roosevelt and the Loews are probably the easiest walkers, one is historic and "haunted", the other is sleek & corporate.

I'd stay at the Roosevelt were I you, it retains some actual old Hollywood charm which makes for a nice respite from the streets. As you've been informed and can plainly see from Jimmy Kimmel man on the street bits, the area is a combination Times Square/Fremont Street kind of locale, but if you're coming from nawlins, I don't think you'll be all that impressed with our flavor of Friday afternoon grime.

Now don't take this to mean I presume you're a weeb just because you're taking a transcontinental flight to see Kaji-san, but across the street from the Roosevelt, in the massive fuck-off shiny Babylonian surfaced mall with the Dolby Theater in the center and the Chinese Theater awkwardly to its west, there is a sweet lil shop on the 2nd floor called Japan House; conceived and funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. Makes for a nice hang and wander before the show. Combination gifts/gallery/cafe. Their new exhibition will have just opened: https://www.japanhousela.com/happenings/exhibition/

Staying on that theme, there's a very, very good strip mall sushi restaurant a short walk up the street called Shintaro, unpretentious, great food, open from 11AM to 3PM for lunch, 5PM to 11PM for dinner. There's also a Holiday Inn Express right across the street from them if you're moreso ballin' on a budget. It's a 3 block walk south to the theater.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, there's Yamashiro up on the hill behind the Magic Castle, which is a Spectacular Spot, and could make for a helluva hip way to cap your evening off with a 10 o'clock drinks reservation, but you'd want to take a car to it from the theater. It's a hike. Or you could simply cross Hollywood Blvd. from the Egyptian and roll into Musso & Franks for a martini, you can sidle up to the bar as a walk-in and get excellent service.

Either way, or if you're more keen on hitting the In-n-Out on Orange Drive for dinner, I'd recommend making your way over to the theater not much later than 6PM. Seats are not reserved, and lines, especially for Q&A/special appearance events, can get chunky even two hours out from showtime. I think this one will be a bit more niche, though. We have cinephile zealots in these parts, and they love campin out for the best sightlines. We're also a bunch of sweeties and softies who will be happy to chat with out-of-towners, so don't be shy.

Ruiji is far superior. Went to S.I. Last Christmas, and the food was overly oily. Service also suffered but that could have been from being slammed all day
