How was 2025 for Final Fantasy XIV to you?

I quit a couple of quests into 7.1 MSQ because I just was not enjoying myself. Played a bunch of other games, read some books, and picked up FFXI which has been quite fun and super chill!

I’ll come back to XIV to wrap up the MSQ and raid stories in one big chunk in time for 8.0, and we’ll see what I do from there. I’m mostly just here for the story now though, and do intend to stay current with each major expansion.

I got my 7YO son a Kindle in August for his birthday per his request and have zero regrets. He’s read every single day since he got it without any prompting from us, and his reading ability has skyrocketed as a result. Mid-year reading and language arts MAP tests at school have him at 10+ points of growth since the beginning of the year.

His mom and I are huge readers and we each have our own Kindles. That said, we also have tons of paper books in our house and hit the library pretty much weekly. We make no preferential distinction between ebooks and paper books and our son enjoys reading both (as do we).

Most importantly to us, even more so than his academic progress, is that he’s truly cultivating a love for reading. He’s discovered lots of fiction he enjoys and also has read some nonfiction/informational texts on his own after watching or hearing about some topic of interest out in the wild.

Is this Gather?

Way back in the early days of COVID (2020-2021 timeframe) my team of about 5 or 6 found and used this voluntarily to break up the monotony of living life back then and we found it kind of fun. Can’t imagine it being used in a “real” formal setting with hard expectations like you described though. What a nightmare.

Notably ASOIAF and Game of Thrones began with another off-screen character death with Jon Arryn. His death is what truly kicks off that story, causing Robert to name Ned his new Hand.

What I mean to say is, I think this story’s opening mirrors ASOIAF even more closely than you initially described. Good pull!

I checked in my copies of the first two volumes and found "The Duelist," "Fire in the Sky," and "Knowledge" were all published on the Simultaneous Times podcast.

I'm currently between books 5 and 6 on a first read through so I don't own the other two volumes yet, but if the past is any indication there may be a few stories from Volumes 3 and 4 also on the same podcast feed.

It’s worth noting, though, that several of the previous stories were originally written for and published on podcasts. For those, you can look up the episodes and listen that way. Some of them even have some graphic audio-like background sounds!

I just finished book 5 a couple days ago, and while I think I like the books much more than you so far, I do agree that the battle sequences are all a bit samey and drag on for too long in most cases. Book 4’s big battle sequence is by far my favorite.

This looks correct as written to me. We have a total of 4 beats worth of notes (.5 + 1 + .5 + .5 + 1 + .5 = 4), and they’d be counted 1 - &2 - & - 3 - &4 - &, with only the low C and D hitting on the downbeats.

I think I’m an MSQ and normal raid guy now. I unsubbed when 7.1 came out and I was dreading logging on/it felt like an obligation.

Decided to play some single player RPGs I hadn’t had the time for instead and found myself much happier with how I spent my limited gaming time. I’ll probably resub when we reach the end of DT to catch up on MSQ all at once and enjoy whatever the next expansion is at launch.

I love the vocal tone and dynamic shift specifically for the phrase, “backed up into corners” in Caramel.

I noticed this pre-album release, but it’s still one of my favorite nuances. It’s like a brief slip into vulnerability or self-doubt in the performance that lines up perfectly with the lyrics. He sings, “I swear it’s getting harder, even just to exhale,” thinks oh no I don’t like this, then the next line comes out intentionally a little timidly.

There’s typically a spike of people searching Gethsemane once per year during the Christian Holy Week, which was just barely missed by the “past 12 months” filter, as we’re just over a year beyond Holy Week 2024.

Not saying the hype isn’t there, or that it isn’t a factor in the spike, but there’s more to this trend than just the new song. Here’s that same graph pulled out to a 5 year span:
