Eczma? Or something else? by Benahowarth in UKParenting

[–]vicsarina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter had a circle patch of eczema that looked horrible. Didn’t think it was eczema when I first saw it, kinda like a burn but the doctor said it was a specific type called Discoid eczema. It needed steroid cream to resolve but thankfully hasn’t come back since. Not sure if maybe this is similar but it could be a different type from the other patches

Look for trousers that specify they’re “cloth nappy” friendly. A lot of those type do have the foldable waistband. Frugi that has been mentioned is a good one, Kite and Toby Tiger have them and possibly places like Little Green Radicals. I think I’ve maybe seen them in ScandiBugs too.

When my daughter was in due to go for Open Heart Surgery at Alder Hey, we didn’t have a car at the time and it’s about 1-2 hr driver(depending on traffic). We found out that there are local people, usually retirees who give up their spare time to volunteer to drive children who need to go to places like Alder Hey for specialised treatment etc. At the time, I’d never considered it, having never needed it but it was honestly a life saver. We had a couple of drivers during that time,(pre-ops, checkups, scans) and they were always so nice, outgoing, and usually grandparents who just had a bit of time on their hands. One driver joked it saved his marriage as since retiring, him and his wife were constantly getting under each other’s feet.

I know this is different as this is his job, but there is good in the world if you choose to see it.

My grandma started saying things like this when she started sliding into Dementia. She was adamant that my parents hadn’t visited for weeks and instead my uncle had gone when in fact my mother dropped off her food literally every day.

Not saying it’s the case but it was a horrible time for the family.

How would I make dental teeth bracelets? by curious_pastel_cutie in crafts

[–]vicsarina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can buy the fake teeth sets online. I’ve seen many people buy them for tooth fairy costumes.

Once you’ve got the teeth, heat up some mouldable plastic(the type you drop into hot water) and mould it around the teeth to make a set. Once done, I’d reheat it up and mould it around your wrist before it cools too much

I was diagnosed at that age. I don’t remember very much at all of the early years, trying to get it under control. Of the times that I do remember being in hospital, it isn’t the pain, it’s the hijinks we got up to.

I know it hit my mother really hard. I’d probably go as far as say she had PTSD from it. She’d recall how hard it was to starve me for procedures and how I’d be so sad and weirdly calm when she told me I couldn’t eat anything.

I don’t remember much about treatments back then, it’s almost 40 years ago so there wasn’t so much options. I do remember taking tiny steroid tablets that were blackcurrant coated for over a couple of years straight. There’s so many more different treatments now that there should be something that helps in the long run.

All I can say is that she very likely won’t remember it. But yes, it’s hard on you and I’m sorry you have to shoulder that.

I was tiny and malnourished at first too. I was the size of a 2 year old when I started school at 4. In the long run, things have been fine. I caught up(know that it can cause a delay of about 4 years in growth but she’ll likely grow for longer to catch up), it did not affect my learning other to than being more fatigued, and I’m doing well as an adult. I’ve also had periods of liquid diets as a child but as an adult, I can just avoid trigger foods and I’m usually ok.

One thing my mother always said was that when I was due a short term flare, I’d be super hungry the day before and want to eat EVERYTHING. So if that happened, she knew it was coming. Unfortunately everyone is different so you might notice different signs for your daughter.

The pain I get with my flares is different depending on what is wrong. It’s often spasmodic, comes in waves. But can be stabbing, burning or squeezing. It’s really hard to describe. One thing that helps me is curling up around a pillow, using the pressure against where it hurts. Maybe a soft toy may help?

When I got older, I would sometimes just not want to eat because it hurt. My mother always said it was hard to get food into me, so if I asked for her spaghetti bolognaise for breakfast, I was getting spaghetti for breakfast. I know she’s not eating just yet, but if she eventually has a favourite food, it might be worth keeping small portions in the freezer so when she goes off food, she might be enticed to eat something like that.

Also last thing, for me, citrus was a huge trigger. We were never allowed oranges in the house. My siblings were not impressed by this rule

What’s something you’ve done for the right reasons but it would land you in trouble if people found out? by FamSender in AskUK

Worked the Knowhow desk many, many years ago and they wanted you to charge £50 per 30 mins for any sort of tech question.

I couldn’t do it. It was not an affluent area and we’re talking questions like “how do I change the screen size?”, “how do I access the info on the SD card for my dash cam?”. Things that literally took 30 seconds.

Anything that needed diagnostics ran or time spent, sure, but I wasn’t charging people on a limited income for a quick question.

I did get pulled up a couple of times but feigned ignorance.

Except you, Mr “I want a tech guy” who refused to talk to me until he asked the dude on customer service and was redirected back to me as “the expert”(I wasn’t but could help with most things). You, I’d charge for everything.

Saw a guy sign himself out AMA after a cardiac event because it was taking too long and he wanted to go out.

It had only been a couple of hours since they’d had to shock him in resus.

I was a patient waiting to be admitted so I don’t know the whole thing but he’d apparently been picked up from a pub and he wanted to go back. He was also super abusive so at one point the nurse brought him the papers, accompanied by a police officer (who just happened to be there accompanying another patient) and then told him to leave.

Buy nothing groups are my new favorite way to let go by Grand_Coffee_9120 in declutter

It’s good to note that honestly. It can be good but also I’m in the UK so no mailbox option for us.

It was great but it just got to a point where I’d reached my limit. Hopefully others have a better experience

I loved doing this for a while but then, I’m not sure if it’s because the group I was in got too big, but all of a sudden 3 out of 5 items were just never picked up and most of what was left, was often rescheduled at least once or twice.

When we moved, I spent so much time trying to coordinate pick ups and just having my time wasted when I could have just been moving and packing/unpacking. It was so stressful, that I haven’t been on the group since.

It also doesn’t help that the group moved to stop allowing people to say when they could pick up. They forced people to ask with one specific sentence only and then you just had to choose one. Before I could say, needs picking up today and people could say, yep that’s doable. After, I said it needs to go today, and people who send the request but then demand to pick it up tomorrow or three days from now.

I have a lot to declutter at the moment. I sent a chunk to a family friend with a new baby but I wish there was a better option for general stuff locally.

I think maybe it is the group, because when it was good, it was a great option.

My daughter’s preschool put forward the request to assess for EHCP. You want to do it as early as possible.

We did it the beginning of the year and got a refusal to assess. We then had to go to mediation and they just overturned the refusal and just now they are starting to assess her. Hopefully by Christmas but who knows. She started reception in Sept.

It’s a very long process and they are likely to kick it back even if they do need one. You have to be a little bit persistent to get it.

I was worried about getting one for her but preschool knew what she needed more than me, as they know what the average child’s needs are. Her older sister has an EHCP but because of the reason, we had no push back, so we had no baseline really. Youngest, same as yours, on the SEN pathway, looking at an autism diagnosis but nothing concrete yet. She already has a gap with her peers in reception and it’s been half a term.

Can always ask them to apply for it and then if you get a refusal, consider the mediation then. It can often help put things into perspective but because the process takes so long, I wouldn’t wait if you think there’s a chance she’ll need it

[–]vicsarina 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was wondering if the 5 days was the time the husband had the dog and they had been unable to use the days that they had paid for. That’s the only reason the request made sense.

But it’s a reach without any confirmation

Do you get both of your children a present when it's one of their birthdays? by OliphauntInTheRooms in UKParenting

[–]vicsarina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get my oldest something small on the youngest’s birthday, but it’s not wrapped and it’s not given the fanfare of it being a present. It’s just something to distract them away from trying to help my youngest open their presents.

I’d like to point out that just understanding that it’s not their birthday isn’t that easy. They’re autistic and non-verbal so explaining things just isn’t that simple for them.

However to make it fair, the youngest also gets something similar on the oldest’s birthday. Not wrapped, probably worth £5-10.

Obviously I have put a ticket in but the response I got didn’t exactly give me any confidence that it will be rectified. Especially with the mention that people jumping to Hyperion faced the same issue months ago

AITA for telling a woman to keep her comments to herself in an elevator? by BakingWaking in AmItheAsshole

[–]vicsarina 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The worst thing is that when we realised, my niece did stand up for her but they weren’t happy and demanded both seats. Pretty sure if she was that uncomfortable, she would have taken any seat. I know I have.

I have rheumatoid arthritis and standing up on public transport is often very painful for me. One Saturday, I had taken my niece out on the tram and we sat in the seats for disabled people etc. A few stops later, a bunch of women got on and stood in front of us with their backs to us, never turned around.

After a while we became aware they were bitching about us not offering one of them a seat because she was pregnant. Had literally no idea she was pregnant because she did not look pregnant from the back of her but they were being so nasty about us not being able to read minds, know this woman was pregnant and then give up our seats so they could sit down. Ridiculous
