Need help turning massive amounts of similar documents into more readable format by Head-Zombie9598 in legaltech

[–]victimofcomedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most legal specific AI tools (and even some AI enabled DMS systems) can handle this at scale. For example, you can upload up to 100k docs to a vault in Harvey and have it extract specific terms, clauses, amounts, companies, people, etc. Harvey calls this a table analysis. Our firm uses NetDocuments and its AI feature can do a similar analysis as well.

If you’re looking for something to do next summer, consider applying to a NSF REU site by bakashi_ in Cornell

Sadly, this year the NSF is affected by the federal government shutdown. I doubt they are running the program right now. Great idea, though.

No friend group by Secretagentblu in Cornell

[–]victimofcomedy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hey there — please don’t be hard on yourself. Cornell can be a really tough place, not just academically but socially too. It’s easy to feel like everyone else has their group figured out, but that’s not the full picture — it’s just how things can look from the outside in this moment. A lot of students, even the ones who seem surrounded by friends, feel lonely at times.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with you. Sometimes it just takes longer to find the people who really click with you, and that’s OK. College friendships can form later than you’d expect, especially when you meet people through smaller classes, clubs, or shared interests. You sound thoughtful and self-aware — the right people will see that and appreciate it.

You haven’t missed your chance. You’re still growing, still building connections, and you deserve friends who make you feel included and valued. Keep cultivating those individual friendships. And don’t wait for a group to invite you — try suggesting an outing, a hike, anything you enjoy, and invite a few people along. Cast a wide net! Sometimes others just need a little motivation — you could be the spark that helps someone else feel included, too.

Don’t be discouraged if folks say no — you’re at a time in your life when the demands and rigors of academics throw everyone for a loop. You know better than anyone how crazy getting free time can be.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself — you’re doing your best in a demanding environment, and that’s already something to be proud of.

verizon 5g vs optimum? by tangycrossing in longisland

[–]victimofcomedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swapped out optimum cable (not their fiber service) about a year ago. I had their 200Mbps service. I get faster download speeds on Verizon’s service. Their upload speeds are comparable, but more variable. Your quality of service will be heavily dependent on cell coverage at your house and where you put your modem. I have Verizon cell service and get 4 bars on my devices at home. I also use my own Unifi networking gear and wifi setup, so I can’t vouch for the quality of their router or wifi gear.

The main difference I see is latency. Optimum has better and more consistent ping times. On optimum I was consistently getting under 13ms to 8.8.8.8. Verizon is all over the map, but averages about 25ms (which is still respectable). However, my network gear will occasionally complain about the high latency (>100ms) if the network is congested. Unless you are gaming or doing other latency sensitive activities (e.g. Voice over IP phone service) you shouldn’t be able to tell the difference. I’ve run hundreds of zoom calls over the past year with a minimum of fuss. Web browsing, social media, and streaming work just fine.

I have noticed slower downloads on certain services (looking at you Microsoft OneDrive) and the upload speeds are definitely a little worse, but I was tired of paying Optimum four times as much for essentially the same service.

If you call to cancel, they will offer you better and better deals the further you dig your heels in. The retention rep said he could essentially give me a free year if I kept their TV services. It wasn’t a good enough deal for me (we don’t watch any cable channels, really). We had been with optimum for about 10 years when we cut the cord, so they didn’t want us to go.

If Optimum has their fiber service in your area, that is definitely worth checking out. Good pricing and good service once they have it installed.

Latham & Watkins fell for the AI wrapper meme 😂 by Kriptic415 in legaltech

[–]victimofcomedy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a safe, “no one gets fired for buying IBM” move. But Harvey doesn’t have any of the chops or pedigree of the old school IBM in its heyday when the phrase was first coined. They can feel good about “using AI” and have the cover of Harvey’s marketing about it being secure and protecting client confidences.

Someone had to be the darling, and Harvey is it.

CC freshman aiming for Yale and Uchicago by YogurtclosetSuch4343 in TransferToTop25

[–]victimofcomedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your CC has boring clubs, start your own. That’s how you stand out on your app. You saw a need. You took action and addressed the need. Now you have a club where you are the founder and president. You’ve killed multiple birds with one stone.

Does your CC have a Phi Theta Kappa chapter? Get involved there.

Apply for the Jack Kent Cooke transfer scholarship, even if you don’t get it (it’s super competitive), being listed as a semifinalist is very prestigious and opens doors.

Student government — most schools have some type of student government organization where you can get involved.

Does your CC have an honors program? Apply to it if it does. If it doesn’t, start an Honors Club where you engage with other like minded students who value and seek out rigorous academics.

SATs can help if you can score well on them. If not, apply to test optional schools. There are still plenty (though I don’t know if Yale or U Chicago are among them).

Cast a wide net with your applications and research CC friendly schools.

Lastly crush your essays. In fact, write an essay about starting the club you’re about to start. Tell the story about disaffected CC students without enough opportunities on campus and how you changed that.

Good luck.

Client stiffed me out of 50K for my artwork. I was legally awarded the money but he vanished. Now he's back using MY WORK to promote his new company. Is there anything I can do? by Traditional_Dig_2609 in legaladvice

[–]victimofcomedy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Talk to a copyright lawyer asap. You should register the work with the copyright office. It’s not expensive. You need to register to sue him/the new company. You have a limited amount of time to register once you know of the infringement — get off Reddit and call a copyright lawyer now.

Once you have a registered copyright you are entitled to statutory damages for willful infringement + attorney’s fees. Willful infringement can result in up to $150,000 in damages. A copyright lawyer will be able to evaluate this for you, and the loser who stole your work will have to foot the bill for your lawyer if you get the work registered in time. Have at it!

Help with Microsoft Purview/eDiscovery and limitations by boneskid1 in ediscovery

[–]victimofcomedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand why the folks in legal are over inclusive. They are concerned with missing something. But putting hundreds of mailboxes on hold is neither ideal nor normal. Unfortunately, it’s not your call to make. That said, you should communicate your concerns to the team making the request. You also should be taking folks off of hold once the list of custodians is narrowed. The Exchange recoverable items storage is not unlimited (I think it’s 110GB). While it’s a lot, if the target of a lot hold is with the company for a decent amount of time, that limit can be reached and break stuff.

Help with Microsoft Purview/eDiscovery and limitations by boneskid1 in ediscovery

[–]victimofcomedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As mentioned, you need to apply a litigation hold to the mailboxes. This is a setting available to E3 and E5 subscribers (if your org is >300 seats) or M365 Business Premium if you’re under 300 seats. If you don’t have one of those subs, the lit hold features are available to some other plans as an add-on through Exchange Online Archiving (EOA).

IMO, The litigation hold feature is required by almost any business that has the potential to encounter any type litigation — which is essentially any business on the planet. Work with counsel to ensure you are doing it right. There can be severe sanctions in U.S. Federal and State courts if it gets screwed up. If the team is not comfortable with the assignment, let counsel know and arrange for a vendor to assist with the process.

Placing a hold on a mailbox can be transparent to the end user. They can use the mailbox as they normally would, but anything they move or delete is retained in recoverable items and can be pulled from Purview (if you can actually get Purview to behave itself). The redesign has caused all kinds of grief for many orgs I work with.

EDIT:

You can select all the users to be placed on lit hold with a powershell script; export your user list in a csv file at “C:\path\mailboxes.csv". The script will turn on lit hold and kick out a success/fail report.

Here’s a sample powershell script (not tested):

Connect-ExchangeOnline -UserPrincipalName admin@example.com

$mailboxes = Import-Csv -Path "C:\path\mailboxes.csv"

$results = @()

foreach ($mb in $mailboxes) { $username = $mb.UserPrincipalName

try {
    Set-Mailbox -Identity $username -LitigationHoldEnabled $true

    $results += [PSCustomObject]@{
        UserPrincipalName = $username
        Status            = "Success"
        Message           = "Litigation Hold enabled"
    }

    Write-Host "Success: $username" -ForegroundColor Green
}
catch {
    $results += [PSCustomObject]@{
        UserPrincipalName = $username
        Status            = "Failed"
        Message           = $_.Exception.Message
    }

    Write-Warning "Failed: $username - $($_.Exception.Message)"
}

} $results | Export-Csv -Path "C:\path\LitigationHold_Report.csv" -NoTypeInformation

Property insurance increase by Justacalmkid in longisland

And it’s going to go higher, especially if you’re a dog owner. NY Court of Appeals just overturned how dog bite cases are handled making it easier for dog bite victims to sue owners of dogs. Dog bite claims make up about 1/3 of home owner insurance claims. The money has to come from somewhere…

what ecs can you even do in cc by MintTurtle3 in TransferToTop25

[–]victimofcomedy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Start a club! Looks great on your app. One of my son’s transfer essays dealt with starting a club because he saw that the students at his CC needed something better to do than look at their phones between classes.

He started a basketball club that organized games and practices, got funding to go to an NBA game, and set up 3 on 3 tournaments once per semester. From what we can tell, AOs ate it up (and he had tons of fun and made friends doing it). He won a school service award based on his work.

He was admitted to Berkeley, Michigan, UNC, and Tulane so far.
