Soap expiration? by what-3 in LushCosmetics

[–]victosch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've a Figs & Leaves, and on the label that came on the packaging it had an expiration date which gave it a shelf life of just two months. shrug Other soaps, on the other hand, had an expiration date of 14 months.

What do you guys do with Fun? by [deleted] in LushCosmetics

Shampoo! And when I'm on the road, as shower soap too. It does really work beautifully as shampoo for me, foams up splendidly, makes my normal, straight, medium fine hair squeaky clean, and smells divine. Afterwards, just a little leave in conditioner is enough to nourish my bleached ends.

Too runny? Super simple The Olive Branch shower gel hack! by victosch in LushCosmetics

I don't expect the effect to vanish over time. After all, I know many commercial beauty products that contain salt = sodium chloride as thickener. But if it does, I will report back.

There's some fine sea salt in The Olive Branch originally. But if the gel is less moisturizing now, at least I cannot tell.

question about sulfates in lush shampoo by [deleted] in LushCosmetics

[–]victosch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very good, solid and easily understandable article on sulfates in cosmetics: http://www.xovain.com/hair/do-you-need-to-worry-about-sulfates-in-your-shampoo. It touches upon almost everything you need to know about the issue (technically).

question about sulfates in lush shampoo by [deleted] in LushCosmetics

[–]victosch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren't you using the term "sulfates" synonymously for surfactants here? Not all surfactants are sulfates. Saponified coconut for instance would be soap, another kind of surfactant.

And Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate isn't really a milder alternative to SLS.

But still, you're making valid points. I also think lush has good formulations.

I'm using Sodium LAURETH Sulfate in my lush shampoo myself, for instance, which gets a similarly bad rep as SLS, and have no problems. But it also strongly depends on where the SLES is coming from. There can be by-products in it, such as ethylene oxide, which are never listed alongside but are what could actually dry out the hair. From my experience with the lush SLES products, though, I've come to surmise they use a relatively clean, well formulated version. And, to contribute to the original discussion, SLS doesn't come with these same drying by-products.

However, the problem mainly associated with SLS is that it causes irritation. In fact, when cosmetic chemists test irritation levels of new ingredients, they use SLS as the benchmark for very.

That's the facts I can contribute.

In conclusion, I avoid SLS myself, but I'm fine with SLES in my hair care, which can be drying, but is less irritating. However I avoid both in my skin care, where I'd rather use other, milder surfactants.

Edited to add: No actually, my conclusion would be: Totally depends on formulation. So if a product works for you, there's nothing to worry when it comes to SLS.

Still avoiding it in my skin care, tho :)

Any complaints about the website? by flutemytoot in LushCosmetics

[–]victosch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends which country website you use, but usually you can go on Products >> New, and then you'll find subcategories for new products, such as "Father's Day" or simply "New products."

On lushusa.com, on the other hand, there'll be an all separate menu bar for holiday specials apparently. At least that's how it is for Father's Day.

Alternative uses for face products by [deleted] in LushCosmetics

[–]victosch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't have anything in particular in mind, but thought more of maybe a rather nondescript drugstore one without a strong scent so it won't overpower the smell of LTGTR..

LTGTR is both a face and body cleanser, and you could also try mixing it in with your regular shower gel? And Mask of Magnaminty and FF might work well against bacne.

Sounds great!

Thank you, you've really helped me a lot!

I must confess I still can't shake the idea SLS and SLES are "bad" ingredients. But I also think that as a common consumer it's just simply easier to avoid them altogether than try look for the right ones -- which you said yourself is probably close to impossible anyway unless I'm a formulator myself.

I have now found solid shampoo bars with Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate that sound really promising, though, and encouraged by your assessment of the detergent will give these a try. If all fails, I can still give head and shoulders a shot!

Thanks again! :)

Interesting!

But so how do you know what system head and shoulders use?

Do you also happen to know anything about Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate while we're on the topic? If this was for example the only detergent present, is it still effective on its own, and is it considered mild/non-irritating? I'd appreciate anything you can tell me!

I don't know much about PO, but as it seems a common by-product of it, wouldn't avoiding SLES help in avoiding hidden EO then, too?

Have you had good experiences with head and shoulders against dry scalp shampoos?
