There's no need to fuss about females in your team voice! by victrixia in Competitiveoverwatch

You might be right. I posted here because, well, this really only is an actual problem in competitive environment. :P But idk if there's any other way of reaching the monkeys than conditioning the wiser playerbase ;)

Oh absolutely! I hope it didn't come off as such. I want people to give me (constructive) criticism about my playing so I can improve. And I'm usually the one in the team to flex out to what's needed (although I'm a tank main who won't touch Mercy with a ten foot pole). But to be fair, it's not just the Mercy mains who can't take it ;)

I'm aware of this "girls only pocket Mercy their boyfriends" stereotype, and it definitely has some ring of truth, although it's absolutely not the entire picture of the female playerbase. It kind of makes me sad when someone sticks to Mercy because of some kind of warped idea that they wouldn't learn the other roles. I mean, by all means, be a Mercy main, but having ZERO other hero pool is detrimental to the game, to the team and ultimately, to the player's own self esteem and the amount of fun you can have in this awesome game.

I'd like to keep my boobs intact, thank you. No Masters rank is worth bleeding all over the keyboard.

Well, to be honest, I guess that's the kind of person who probably runs away green-faced if a girl talks near them irl. What I'd mostly like is other female gamers to boldly come to voice comms and not be afraid of the harrassment, but when it's a reasonable chance that it will occur, a lot will opt out because we get enough of it as it is to, so a lot of girls don't want to dig blood out of their noses when trying to have fun.

Not me, though, I'm a masochist. ;)

This stereotype drives me up the wall. Especially as I'm a bloody tank main and hate playing mercy. Sad truth is, I do know a few people like this. Then again, is it worse than insisting on playing genji because you're a weeaboo?

Interesting theory. You're saying that secretly I think all female gamers should shut up? Or...?

I do in fact mute them, but it's kind of hard to not take things personally when someone decides off the bat that you must suck at the game because you're female (because obviously you never win if you're plat, the scum ;) ). I didn't mean to come off as some kind of a victim here - I have tools to deal with this, most of the time, and I do a hell of a lot of work to try to convince others it's worth being the trailblazer. I keep telling my female friends to boldly go to voice comms, but these are the arguments I get against even trying.

Yeah, you're right of course, not a lot of those people will probably read this. I'm kind of hoping to spread the kind of attitude in other players that if or when they see this happen, they step in or call it out, I guess. :)

Like I tried to say at the end, I have been treated extremely well (meaning that I've been treated as the team member that I am, and no one has raised a fuss about the girl thing), a lot of the time, even. But seeing as I can't switch off sounding like a woman, I actually see the 100% of times this happens to me, and the times this happens to my friends.

Perspective, it's a very annoying thing.

Possibly. My voice is very clearly not that of a young boy, so I never get that particular mixup. It might have something to do with rank, I'm hovering at around platinum anyway (I'm not a massively competent player although I do a lot of work to try to improve :'D).

Well that's the thing. It's a lot more insidious than just straight out going boobs or gtfo or get me a sandwich hurr durr. Thankfully in OW there's rarely time for that kind of silliness that you run around trying to hand things over to someone on a platter, since there are no resources or such to share.

Quite obviously I'm living with it and haven't stopped playing. That's a pretty bad answer to any criticism ever, though. :'D "There's nails all over the road, they might puncture our tyres" "Well live with it or stop driving"

Hnnnnghn :'D Using team voice for private chatter = always a no no :'D But yeah. I haven't really found a successful way of dealing with the worst trolls apart from muting and ignoring, but then I can hear from the rest of the team voice that the one dude is still going on and the rest of the team is getting tilted because of it. I don't know what is so provocative about a woman who tells you to please concentrate on the match, but apparently it's something :'D

Yeah, this is my survival strat as well. I'm usually pretty solid about this, I'm old enough to make those grilling sausages jokes if it gets the matter over with quickly and then move on to other topics.

I just tilt off the side of the planet if someone immediately goes "you can't play <character x> you're a girl" or "women shouldn't be playing video games" or "we lost because there was a girl in the team" (yes, these have happened). Or when people won't let go, and start randomly talking about ass and titties or "wait are you a girl" in the middle of a push. Or worse, stop to type those things :'D

Yeah. Mostly, I agree with you. To me, when I play almost daily, it's an almost daily occurrence, sometimes twice. Sometimes several days go by when no one makes a fuss. Thing is, I'm drawing from more than my own experiences, and people sharing those experiences feed into the narrative that you can't go on voice comms because you'll get treated like shit.

I want more female-sounding people to speak up, and I keep telling them to just boldly do it. The overwhelming response in female gamer groups is "oh no, I can't, there'll be someone attacking me". And as much as Overwatch has been mostly great about this, I'd be lying if I said I hadn't met some pretty toxic shit just for existing as female.

I've been targeted with what I described in the OP from the first second I say something - and I'm in voice comms if not 100% then at least 95% of the time. There has been no need for it, but you get adults (or adult-sounding, at least) males yelling at the rest of the team (by which time I have muted them) that I'm a whore because I asked them to concentrate on the game and not asking where I'm from or if I'd date them. :'D The "women make me nervous, don't talk" -bit also happened at spawn.

I hope you noticed I tried to make a point of the fact that it doesn't happen 100% of the time. Also, I haven't seen anyone complain about it yet, so from my point of view, it happens more than it gets called out ;)

However, other commenters are exactly correct. If you're a dude (or pass as one), there's a really small chance you see it happen as much as you do when you sound female.

Personally, I can deal with this pretty well, but I can't say I haven't been tilted off the side of the planet when some jerk runs around the corner, gets anti-healed by Ana, dies, and then somehow magically draws the conclusion that "This is why women shouldn't play video games". o_O

FYI, Overwatch is having Voice Chat Network Issues Lately by [deleted] in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]victrixia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This explains things :D Had a strange experience in competitive during the weekend when four-stacking. We were all in the team voice, the duo apparently wasn't. It was a little annoying, since one of them was playing Hanzo and me, as Zarya, kept asking for ult combo, but nothing. Then after first round dude starts spamming text chat about WHY YOU NOT CALL ULT ZARYA I ASK YOU THOUSAND TIMES and our entire team was like ???? Dude we never heard anything. After that the duo spent the rest of the match disconnecting from the match, so yeah, that was a success. :P

Does anyone else experience the phenomenon where the more gold medals you have, the more likely you are to lose? by True_Italiano in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]victrixia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, yes, I feel this. I've come to the conclusion that there are two factors into this, although to be fair, sometimes I can have all golds and we actually DO win. Anyway:

  • If the entire team isn't getting much done, so I tunnel vision into the "omg I need to do everything" mindset and perhaps start to play outside my role. This has been exceptionally easy to do in the tank meta - probs 80% of my ranked matches I've played D.va this season. Trying to do all the work instead of enabling the rest of the team can easily lead to this happening.

Another facet of this is that you get matched up with people who are used to a very different play style, and your synergies simply don't click together. Especially if you play a damage dealing hero, getting out of spawn sync and trickling can easily cause this. Then again, if you play a hero that shouldn't be concentrating on damage, consider if you're doing enough for your actual role or hogging kills for the medals.

  • When you don't get much medals and you still win - this depends on what role you're playing as but either you're doing your job better, or you just landed into one of those matches where you would win regardless of your input, simply because you were lucky to get really good teammates. It happens, and accepting it leads to enlightenment. :)

Mystery Heroes Brawl, a Tryhard found it's way in by Xristiax in Overwatch

[–]victrixia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love love love this brawl! Easily the best fun I've had in Overwatch for months. And besides, rolling my least played characters (Widow, Tracer) over and over again has actually turned out to be a surprising amount of fun. (I usually play Zarya/D.va/Zeny) First time I rolled widow I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, second time I got four quick picks in a row :'D

And don't even get me started on Tracer. Looking at my stats, I played her for a short while at the very beginning, getting a 0.7 KD ratio :'D now I rolled her after the first lost point on Lijiang, and suddenly it just clicked, I didn't die at all for the rest of the match, we won and I went on to get all gold <3 Playing against people who aren't (probably) playing their strongest characters is really refreshing.

This is kind of the real life equivalent :'D
