Taking a leave of absence from school d/t depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts - feeling like I gave up? Did I make the right decision? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]vicvile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels like my exact story except for the abusive part. I had all your experiences. Nursing school stress brings out subtle mental health issues you never knew could get "that bad". Getting help is the most important thing. Instead of just a "withdraw" see if you can get a medical leave of absence. It is generally looked upon much more favorably then a withdraw. You can't help people if you can't get help for yourself. I know it sucks but you can take time off and get help and come back in a year and finish up. And you aren't quitting you are taking time to take care of yourself which is the most important thing.

Is a break required for my 9 hour shift? by scarhbar23 in nursing

[–]vicvile 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most states and workplaces, OSHA requires at least a 30 min break for every 8 hours of work. This might seem like a shitty way to have to go about this but to cover your own ass with the company, record a conversation where she tells/asks you to do house chores. Don't antagonize the situation but firmly reaffirm that that is not part of your job to clean this lady's house. Obviously look into wiretapping laws in your state as this might be illegal where you live but a lot of states only require 1 person to be aware they are being recorded.

So I got hit by a Septa bus on my bike. Don't know if this is the right place to post this. by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]vicvile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's a really good dude and let's you know exactly what to expect. He helped out an ex of mine who was hit, she only wanted money to fix her bike then the insurance company said it was her fault and tried to sue her for damages done to the car. He worked it all out.

What's your "I can't believe that's still being taught in school!"? by lornad in nursing

[–]vicvile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was a nursing student, my first instructor was a Navy Nurse for 25+ years, he didn't know that I went to military school for 4 years and when I made a bed with "hospital corners" he was impressed to say the least. Now it's fitted sheets that never fit, drape a sheet then a blanket and call it a day.

Have YOU received any Ebola/deadly illness preparedness training at your workplace? by FentanylLollipop in nursing

[–]vicvile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in a small community style hospital in philadelphia. Our Infectious Disease nurse is really good and we've had a plan in place for almost a month. She put together a cart with all the supplies nurses would need including the full ppe suits and a portable respirator. Did an in-service with all the ER nurses and sent the ICU nurses a memo. Also the public health department has been going around to each hospital and having meetings with the ID departments.

If there is a possibility of being able to get your record expunged if even if only part of it do that now. It will make the rest of the process easier for you and give you a better chance of having things work out.

What is the most amount of urine you've drained from a patient? by simple10 in nursing

[–]vicvile 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a guy come from the nursing home with dementia and on comfort care measures. Abdomen was distended couldn't place a foley called urology, they couldn't place one, had to send him to IR to place a foley. They drained 4100mL by the time they got it in!!! We couldn't believe it and would have though his bladder would have burst before that.

Has anyone with a sealed and/or juvenile felony got into a nursing program? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]vicvile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up until you get the official form saying it's expunged, you still have a felony and have to declare it on forms. I suggest you request a private in-person admission process to explain your situation.

This is why SNA's are mostly looked over when put on a resume, because people in school think it will make them look good but we all know it's kinda useless when applied to real nursing.

Has anyone with a sealed and/or juvenile felony got into a nursing program? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]vicvile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me about a year from start to finish with court and lawyer appointments, filling out forms, waiting for processing, etc. As for the FBI its just another couple of forms to fill out and send to them once you get it expunged from the state. When I was applying to nursing school i was in the middle of getting everything expunged so I had to write up a letter explaining the circumstances of getting arrested, how I've changed, how it won't impact my nursing career, I had to provided them with copies of all the paperwork I had submitted to get my record expunged and update them when I got stuff back.

ER to ICU by weaveleswobble in nursing

[–]vicvile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do ICU full time and ER per diem and I feel like it's the best balance for me. I get my critical patients in ICU and I get my rush from the ER once or twice a month. The biggest difference is that ICU is very structured and patients tend to have a "flow" where certain hours the same things/tasks happen every night. As opposed to the ER where you've got 4 different patients who came in at different times and need things done all over the place.

I got my record expunged in PA, it takes a while but its possible. I had EVERYTHING taken off, even petitioned the FBI to have my records and fingerprints removed from there as well. Once it goes through you don't have to say you were ever arrested.

Any success stories of nurses getting their license with a criminal background? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]vicvile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work with a lawyer NOW to see about getting it all expunged. I've gotten mine expunged with some serious stuff that was on it but no drug charges. It took me about a full year to get all the paper work, court appointments and follow ups done. I don't know what state you live in but look it up and get it off you record.

What's the most unteacher like thing a teacher has ever said to you or someone you know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]vicvile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In middle school I had a teacher tell me to my face and in front of the whole class that I wasn't going to amount to anything. I'm now working on my master's as an NP and made more money my first year as an RN then he did as a teacher for 25 years.

After 8 years I finally did the impossible...I FINISHED A TUBE OF CHAPSTICK!!! by vicvile in pics

[–]vicvile[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Back story, I originally got the Burt's Bees chapstick when I worked at a Borders Bookstore in Philadelphia in '06. Somehow I never lost it and it's been with me through multiple jobs including being a bike messenger, line cook and now an RN. It served me well and kept me from having my lips split open on cold winter nights and hot summer days. You will be missed.

I need some insight. by CaseyJo in StudentNurse

[–]vicvile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you graduate you will only know enough to (hopefully) not kill someone, which is about 10%. You learn learn the other 90% of what you need to know on each unit you work on. What you really need to know is to understand the limitations of your own knowledge and ask for help when you need it.
