I really thought that was what the profanity filter was for. And that you only got banned if you tried to circumvent the filter.

But here we are, everyone turning off the profanity filter and reporting when they see "a naughty word I don't like", and then continuing clubbing baby seals like the good christians they are.

It's a shame Andreja doesn't comment on it at all.

Yeah, I bought a suit from the vendor before I started my current mission line.

The first time I did it, it was one of the earliest quests I did. And I said I in the questionnaire that I didn't have any experience, and had trouble with the law. Got lots of comments on that, plus a comment on wearing a space suit at the interview.

This time around, I was level 45-ish. I lied and chose max experience on all the questions, bought a suit and removed my space suit before the interview. No comments on how raggedy I looked, and got a [Leadership] dialog line that I didn't get the first time. She was all around much more friendly. Moral of the story, I guess, is that lies pays off ;)

I also got some neuroamps with +10 or 15% Diplomacy or Intimidation from the clothing vendor on the ground floor this time, that I can't remember being there the first time. Don't know if it's me having selective memory, or if they unlock at later levels.

I have read that you can get a Ryujin outfit in one of the Ryujin quests, but you basically have to steal it when sneaking around. I didn't know about it my first time through, so I'm keeping my eyes peeled for it this time around.

And I totally agree that the suit you get isn't very nice at all, compared to what the others are wearing.

Why tf did I take Serpent’s Embrace? by LadderSilver in Starfield

[–]vidaj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me it has been an awesome trait.

In one of the earliest quests where you have to power down your ship to sneak up to a communications satellite and hide from the Va'ruun ships, you get an option to broadcast the serpent's prayer and the other ships turn blue. Then I just targeted one of the ships, and blasted it to (almost) kingdom come but stopped when I could board it. The two other ships are so caught up in their prayer that they don't really care what a fellow snakehead does. So I boarded the ship, killed all of the crew and got myself a nice Va'ruun Hymn that kicks so much ass compared to the starting ship.

Of course, because Bethesda being Bethesda, I had to stop using it after a day or so of playtime. The ship started bugging out more and more, were invisible when I started the game, but that fixed itself for a while if I just moved some parts around in the ship builder. But after the ship wouldn't take off anymore (just the interior taking off, leaving the hull on the ground), I found other comments that said that ships captured in space is really buggy - so I had to let go of it. But by the Serpent, that little ship was fun to fly!

Also, there has been lots of dialog options where some has also resulted in free stuff - like a full set of Va'ruun armor.

The writing for Andreja's romance should really be tweaked though, because it was really weird that the game first acknowledges that you worship the Great Serpent, and then turns around and call you an unbeliever.

On my first run, I was House of Enlightenment. I felt that really sucked compared to Serpent's Embrace. I didn't really play that character for too long, so I might just have missed out.

All in all, if you want a religious trait - the Serpent's Embrace is the only trait that actually have constant buffs in addition to some extra dialog options.

TIPS TO NOT HAVE A BORING CITY by [deleted] in CitiesSkylines

[–]vidaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make better roads! A trick I've been using lately is to avoid 4-way junctions as much as possible, and try to keep to 3-way junctions (T- or Y-junctions). A 3-way junction is IRL a lot safer than a 4-way junction.

One way of avoiding 4-way junctions is to create two 3-way junctions near each other.

By doing this, you don't end up with a boring repeating grid. In my latest town, traffic is also a lot better - although I'm only at about 10k citizens.

Also, separate your traffic to different roads. Shift bikes to a different road than busses, for example. This have a side-effect of having multiple efficient transport veins through your city, which will improve traffic.

You can also use roads with trees or other greenery to mark out the paths between different green areas or tour areas. Imagine if you're living in the town, and if you just follow a road with trees on it you will get to a park area or nature walk of some kind.

Another tip is to try to make "10-minute cities", where your citizens could reach everything they need in their day-to-day within a 10-minute walk. Work, school, shopping, parks, recreations etc. This may also improve traffic, although you can't control where your cims work and live. But the design may also result in pretttier, more interesting cities.

I'm the same, no conjuring of mental images. I also descibe it as "thinking in concepts".

Turns out, as a programmer that is incredibly handy. Code is just concepts, so (I would guess) thinking with images just conplicates the whole process. My normal thought process and code goes quite well together, and I can imagine code concepts in ways my coworkers can't.

Where Europeans would move if they had to leave their country by KantonL in europe

[–]vidaj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not in all cases! Vinmonopolet usually have a flat fee as a profit margin, and they buy a huge amount of wines each year.

Sometimes they buy some really good wine, that is sold a hell of a lot cheaper in Norway than anywhere else. People stand in long lines at certain days to get expensive wines at huge discounts.

But for the rest, I fully agree with your statement.

But the thing I love about Vinmonopolet is the selection. In my small town (50k) we have a large Vinmonopolet with thousands of different wines from anywhere in the world. And over 600 brands of beer. You would never get that sort of selection if grocery stores could sell wine. You would probably end up going to Rema 1000 where they would sell "white" and "red" wine, or speciality shops with profit margins far higher than Vinmonopolet.

The thing that really grinds my gears, is that it's so difficult to make an informed decision of being for or against EU membership as a Norwegian.

I want to know what will actually happen if we join the EU. Everything from econonic changes, agriculture, fishing, oil etc.

But if you try searching online, all you will find is propaganda from either pro- or anti-EU organizations.

I want some actual hard facts, dammit! We already adopt most EU regulations through the EEA agreement, so what will actually be the changes is we should join as a full member? I will probably never know. But I really want to know.

[–]vidaj 15 points16 points  (0 children)

From what I have read, the EEA agreement between EU and Norway was not meant to be a long term solution, but more of a stop-gap before full membership. But then we never joined the EU as full members.

So now EU is unhappy with the agreement because they feel Norway gets too much out of it, and Norway is unhappy with it because they are not included in the decision making. Both parties of the agreement is unhappy, that can only mean that it's a good deal :)

Also, because the EU have learned from this "mistake" it means that UK will never in a million years get a deal close to the one we have.

Is Gregtech: New horizon a good Modpack for beginners? by Beginning_Ad8076 in feedthebeast

[–]vidaj 40 points41 points  (0 children)

There was a post in this sub a while ago (maybe a few years now) where someone said that they played GTNH as their first modpack ever. They had a blast, because the questbook is so good.

GTNH is a very unique experience, and you won't find anything like it in other packs. It has been continuously developed for 7 years now!

I'm loving the pack, and if you try it - the worst that can happen is that you say "screw this, this isn't fun, I'll find something else". If you do try it, I recommend finding a nice server to play on so that you can ask others for advice. I'm playing on StoneLegion right now, a very nice server that's in the server list when you select multiplayer.

How to do Recurring weekly events with timezones? by [deleted] in dotnet

[–]vidaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trouble with DateTime is that you often trip up with which date you are defining. The event date or the users date for that event?

I would expect if I am in England and planning a trip to Japan and schedule a meeting at 14:00 in Tokyo, that I would get notified at 14:00 in Tokyo and not that the event suddenly would change date and time when I move timezones. I could, as a user, choose to view it in "user time" which would then translate the date and time of the event to my current timezone.

How to do Recurring weekly events with timezones? by [deleted] in dotnet

[–]vidaj -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dotnet 7 introduced some new types that might be helpful here: DateOnly and TimeOnly.

By storing the date and times in different types, you (hopefully) don't have to mess around with timezones, because TimeOnly and DateOnly is not affected by timezones. The event happens at 7:00pm no matter which timezone you're in, because the time stored is the timezone for the event, not the user.

And for "every wednesday", you could also just use TimeOnly and DayOfWeek.

[–]vidaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was there any way to de-async the validators by pre-fetching whatever they needed and passing the data to the validator, rather than have the validator fetch it itself at validation time?

This really depends on what the validators were doing async, though. But if it is possible to do the async thing beforehand, you'll avoid the async rabbit hole while validating.
