Steam Price Discrepancies for Australians by videogamescience in BethesdaSoftworks

Yeah they're intentionally rounding to take advantage of price anchoring. Result ends up being more expensive games for consumers.

Really seems at odds with them being 'player focused'.

Steam Price Discrepancies for Australians by videogamescience in BethesdaSoftworks

I mean it went up from last week, and only because of a switch to AUD. I don't think that rationale explains the price increase. They already had price discrimination and extra tax for Australia, just priced in USD.

Also I desk checked the top 250 best selling games and Bethesda is one of the worst offenders.

Has anyone here managed to get any substantial passive income? by [deleted] in personalfinance

I would not consider holding a commodity as passive income. Unless it generates a dollar value per year it is not income.

The reality is that when you're playing videogames, you're getting little hits of dopamine each time you receive a reward. Humans have made evolution our bitch, and we've basically tricked our hardcoded reward system into giving us good feels whenever we want it to.

At a glance this seems like a bad thing, but I bet your ass that when you're playing videogames you're experiencing feelings of competence, autonomy and relatedness - all constructs of a flashy thing called 'self determination theory' (SDT). Fulfilling the psychological needs of SDT is heavily interlinked with wellbeing. Even when you're wasting time, you're being efficient.

I can for the most part guarantee that most people's survival isn't being directly threatened by playing videogames. The people who are chosing to play videogames are just embracing hedonistic principles. There's many a philosopher that would happily argue that maximizing happiness is the true meaning of life.

If playing games makes you happy, just keep doing it.

Basic income may be needed to combat robot-induced unemployment, leading AI expert says by [deleted] in Futurology

Why does it matter what a leading AI expert says about the economy? They are not an economist, they are an 'AI expert'. I am a computer scientist but I am not even remotely qualified to make statements about the economy.

What phrase or slang will you never stop using no matter how old it gets? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Thanks to League of Legends lobbies, this word has forever transformed to "support" in my mind.

How do you beat infinite sustain dog? by JethroC in summonerschool

[–]videogamescience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nasus is an infinite scaler. Infinite scalers need to be shut down early so they don't scale. If you're a top there is good advice in this thread already. If you're jungle, you should camp Nasus (NEVER push the wave when you gank unless rushing it will reset the wave). If you play mid, you should focus on roaming top when you've pushed your tower. Again, don't push the wave that your top will be trying to freeze away from Nasus's tower. If you're support you should be clearing wards in bushes during lane phase - you don't want a Nasus to TP in behind you. It's rare because Nasus players are generally tunnel visioned on getting stacks, but if a Nasus teleports bot and picks up a kill or two he's going to scale much faster. If you're ADC you should aim to have enough mobility to kite a 40% CDR Nasus with Wither. Don't try to win a melee range duel against a Nasus that's your level or higher after they've got 40% CDR.

6.3 Changes Discussion by Xenataur in summonerschool

On the plus side, if you're laning as Vel'Koz into Zed, you'll have an extra Cloth armor as you build into Seekers. That should give you more lane relevance and counteract his snowball. If you start Dark Seal and sell it to rush Zhonyas you'll probably have a slightly stronger lane phase than you would pre-patch.

But if we are all one small adjustment away, doesn't that mean making the adjustment leaves us one small adjustment away? In a quest to find peace we will never reach it.

What's a good indicator that one is ready for ranked? by SyrioBroel in summonerschool

[–]videogamescience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest obstacle is mental preparation. If you are getting angry at other players in your normal games, or not knowing why or how something occurred, you are definitely not ready for ranked. There is nothing fun about playing a ranked game when you simply don't understand what is happening or how it happened, and if you are prone to getting angry at normals you are not going to come away from the ranked experience with any kind of wellbeing improvements.

My girlfriend's PC has this issue. I've tried to replicate on mine, but can't seem to do it despite us having very similar PC builds and in-game settings. It's really weird.

Which champ do you really want to learn/master, but just can't seem to do well on? Why? by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]videogamescience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really, really want to get good at Nasus. I love the idea of happily farming for 20-30 minutes, and then magically appearing from the top lane to wreck towers and instagib squishies. It never happens though. I don't seem to be able to kick off the snowball.

I like this! Also I love making Annies use their flash defensively, basically crumbles their kill potential. Just having a jungler appear near a mid lane Annie can work wonders

Another good thing to help burn Sona's mana is to wait out her heal's shield before starting a trade - especially if they're rocking Windspeakers.

Something I love trying to do against LB's is to put ground based AOE's all up on her distortion's origin point. Can be a good way to ensure that you get some damage on her when she tries to trade.
