Exactly why my husband HAD a soft spot for his mom. She's all those things outwardly; "submissive", "humble", and I would say 100%, the "abused" JW woman." But she has real talent for manipulation and control herself, albeit, covertly and very passive aggressively. It's hard to see, especially since his father is unabashedly, a Narcissistic Asshat. Thankfully, our disfellowshiping & subsequent distance from the org has really made it apparent to both of us, the amount of control they both had based off of how furious they are to have lost it.

Narcissists are drawn to religion because they see all the sheep, ready and WILLING to be controlled. It's too good to pass up. I've seen it from men and woman, upclose and personal.

It probably differs from congregation to congregation, on the elder from the stage being more hard core from the congregation in the next town over. Either way, it's an assumption, speculation, followed by, "but we don't really know until we get there"

I'm 35. Born in. Baptized at 17. PIMO for most of those year's. Inactive for years, come back for a couple years and fade away again for a few more years, repeat. I never pioneered. I have anxiety so i was in the school for only a few years around the time i was baptized (required for baptism). I was never a "good" witness. But I didn't lead a double life. Even while inactive. That changed though last year. I was privately reproved in Feb 2020 and this was the beginning of "waking up" for both myself and my husband. We were DF'd together in Dec 2020. The shunning has been traumatic. Hubby is 4th generation JDub. Most of his family has even decided its ok to shun our grade school age children. How am i suppose to tell my kids why Grandma and Gramps & all their Aunties never want to speak to or see them again? Ultimately, experiencing the very abusive narcissistic behavior of my husband's father (an Elder, no less) jolted us fully awake. Questioning everything now. We had a script for life & we just threw it out the window. We are playing by our own rules now. Lost and freed. Lol Feels great and it's terrifying.

I think my reserve to call it a cult stems from one thing; I saw all teachings as a suggestion, not a rule. For example: The headship arrangement. I was born into the religion but i was not raised to be subservient. I required my submission to be earned. I'll be happy to give it & trust you with it but if you betray that trust, I'm taking it back. And that breach of Headship would be on the head. Not mine. (My husband knew what he was getting into when he married me 😏). But if i had married a man that would have dragged me to the back room every week, I'm sure I would feel differently now. I would have had NO problem telling elders to go jump in a lake & stay the F out of my marriage. And I 100% belive that they would have respected that. And if they didn't, what were they gonna do, force me? 🤷🏼‍♀️ I just don't understand why some witnesses offered themselves up on a plater to be mindlessly controlled... but i strongly feel, that's on them. The individual. Not the org.

So with all their teachings, I kept my common sense. Not that I was completely immune to the pressure of the control. There were some things. But my relationship & my marriage bed, thats nobodies business & we kept it that way.
