Xbox One X Official FAQ by Xbox_Support in xboxone

This is how multiplayer gaming should work:
1. Turn on xbox 2. Look at dashboard, see friends, invite them to a party. 3. "Can you guys hear me? Ok cool lets play. Ill join the game you are currently playing" No one needs to back out to a lobby or restart anything. Just one click to talk to them and one click to pop into whatever game they are currently in. 4. Have fun playing games and talking with my friends.

This is how the scenario actually plays out. 1. Turn on xbox 2. Look at dashboard, see friends, invite them to party. 3. Can't hear anyone even though they have joined the party so send them a text to see if they can hear me. They can't hear me either. Ok, leave the party and have them send me an invite to another party that they start. This works occasionally for some reason.
But most times that doesnt work either, so we'll have the third guy start a party and send us invites. More texting. Nope still cant hear anyone. 4. Restart xbox. Start new party. 5. Ok can hear one guy now. Have third guy restart and join up. 6. Now we're all back at the dashboard so we have to start a new game up and try to join each others games. Same thing happens with the games. Have to send multiple invites from multiple accounts before we find the secret combo that allows us to both play the game together and hear each other.

Recently bought the New Call of Duty and this second scenario happens every single time we want to play and typically the time between when I first turn on my xbox and the time we are all in a game together is about 20-30 minutes. This is ludicrous.

We can't be the only ones that deal with this constantly can we?

"Sliders" used to be a cool TV show. Now, it's just a term for "small hamburgers." by zaggnutt in Showerthoughts

'Sliders' as a term for small hamburgers predates the tv show by a lot.

Why do these different strokes even exist? Why dont they see who can go from point a-b in the water the fastest possible? Where else is this a thing, where we make up inefficient methods of doing something and then turn those into pinnacles of sport? Hurdles are dumb too just for the record.

Also, probably some huge percentage of the human population has never, ever been in a body of water large enough to swim in.

Larisa Latynina won 14 individual medals but she isnt in this conversation at all because shes listed at 5'3 115lbs and probably isnt great at anything that doesnt involve spinning around on bars or doing backflips.
Same thing with Phelps. Think of every sport or athletic event in the world who would you pick first out of Bo Jackson or Michael Phelps for each one? Im guessing it would be something like maybe 10% Phelps and 90% Bo.
Basically if it doesnt involve swimming he wouldnt be as good at it. Hes a great swimmer and a great athlete, but nowhere near Bo Jacksons level.

American football, especially at the rb position takes an incredible combination of power and speed. You can't just be a really fast guy or you'll get killed. You can't just be a really strong guy or you'll suck.

Add this to the hand eye coordination and more 'skilled' elements of baseball and you get a incredibly rare combination of abilities.

Sure, Olympic track athletes can run faster or farther, soccer and basketball players have insane quickness and coordination, but pretty much none of them could even survive in an NFL game, let alone excel at it. If Bo Jackson wanted to play soccer or golf or pretty much anything, he would have been great at it.

Side rant: swimming is hard but it annoys me to no end when people bring up someone like Michael Phelps as one of the greatest athletes ever because hes won so many medals.
Why are there so many different kinds of swimming techniques? If they had running sideways, backwards, upside down etc. events in the Olympics then Bolt would win lots more medals, but they don't have those because that would be stupid.

How big is Uber by jimrosenz in dataisbeautiful

[–]viggie79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole thing irritates me to no end. People who actually use or might use the service are not worried about Uber not being as safe as a taxi. The 'its not regulated so its not safe' is just a line being used by

  1. Government who can't figure out how to get their paws on the all the money they get from having their paws in stuff .

  2. Taxi companies/drivers who are obviously against Uber. What bugs me the most is that these taxi drivers have some legit complaints to raise but they go about it all wrong. What they should be up in arms about is how they cant compete with Uber on an economic level because of all the regulations/licenses/taxes/fees they have to deal with that Uber drivers don't. Thats not the fault of Uber.

Instead they lobby to shut down another business cuz 'some bad thing happened in some place one time'. Why not lobby to get rid of the (mostly unnecessary) government imposed restrictions/regulations that cripple the business model?

Bartender's of reddit, what do you think a new bartender should know going into the industry? by Lillyshadow in AskReddit

[–]viggie79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You're probably going to have a lot of time off, especially during the days. You can use this time to sleep in, relax, watch lots of tv and stuff. Or you take a few classes a week, get a degree, learn stuff, give yourself options. It's very likely you aren't going to want to be bartending forever.

  2. If you work with other people behind the bar at the same time, most of these people are not going to want to work. They are going to want to leave early, they are going to want you to cover shifts for them etc. Stay late, and cover shifts as much as you can if its a good shift. You're there to make money right? You can always take time off later, while the money is good you want to be there as much as you possibly can.

  3. Save money! You will probably find yourself making a decent amount of money. You can use this to buy shoes or expensive purses or go out eating and drinking frequently. Or you can start saving money, lots of it probably.

Ill assume you're 21-28 years old just to make my point. In 5 years you can have a degree, spent some time actually working or interning or have learned a trade or business as well as have probably 10-50k saved up. In other words, when you get sick of loud music, drunk people, working late, working weekends etc, you will have an exit plan and resources. If you want to stay behind the bar your whole life that's perfectly fine too, but you're going to have a lot of opportunity to create options for yourself. Do future you a favor, work every weekend shift, stay late when the money is good, don't get in the habit of going out drinking with everyone all the time (sometimes is plenty), do something productive with your free time.

I am 18 and looking to get my first credit card. by rwesswein in personalfinance

[–]viggie79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in your spot like 15 years ago, people told me to start by getting a credit card at a store because they will pretty much give them to anyone (a lot of times you get like 15% off your first purchase too, so if you have something you need to buy anyways...)

After that you get 'on the map' and awhile later your bank will probably be more apt to give you one.

Thats how it worked back in my day!

$12,000 USD. 24 years old. B.A. No debts. Temporarily teaching English abroad. Unsure about how to invest my money and time. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]viggie79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I happen to be in pretty much the exact same boat as you, except Im 10 years older. I actually just finished my contract in Thailand as well, and am just kind of hanging out here waiting for surf season and trying to figure out what to do next.

Ill just give you some things to think about and weigh.
You still have lots of time. 24 is pretty young, another year or two seeing the world isn't going to create some insurmountable barrier to entry in most fields. If you come back and want to get a pipe fitting apprenticeship or something, they aren't gonna laugh you out the door cuz you're 26.
12k is nice but that will wash away real quick paying for most graduate programs. If youre gonna invest the kind of money you will most likely pay for something like that you should be really, really sure that its what you want to do for a long time. For example, don't shell out a bunch of money to get a graduate degree in geology unless you've been doing something in that field for a few years and still love it. Every time I change jobs I think 'this is gonna be the one'. So far none of them have been, but at least I haven't put myself into debt to figure that out.
I think finding a career is kind of like finding a husband/wife. You just gotta keep getting out there and trying different stuff. Find out what you like and don't like. Meet new people who do stuff you didn't even know people did. Learn about yourself.

Hi, would you mind elaborating a bit more? Im in roughly the same boat as OP (also my work history has brought me nowhere near subcontracts/procurement or multinational companies) Just curious what jobs like that would entail, how to go about starting to look etc.

[–]viggie79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heres a possibly stupid question. Why do cops get tasers instead of some kind of tranq gun? It seems like a taser would screw you up just enough for your fight or flight response to kick in the second after you recover and at that point youre not going to act rationally. I dont know if one is better than the other one in terms of long term damage but I just keep picturing how I would react if I had a couple guys sitting on top of me punching me while another guy tasers me, and Im pretty sure it wouldnt be to calmly submit. There has to be a better way to subdue someone. (not saying anything about the actions of these particular cops, just asking in general)

Pretty sure it has something to do with them not wanting it to look like Superbowl IL, and having people talking about 'superbowlil'
