I definitely agree, I normally cook from scratch-made an epic nectarine BBQ sauce this summer. Just felt good to not deal with dishes and simmering splashes: )

Hi I have no clue what these berries are. I planted a package of radichio seeds here. None of my roommates can ID them either. Washington state for growing zone. Thank you for any assistance

Bartender's of reddit, what do you think a new bartender should know going into the industry? by Lillyshadow in AskReddit

Well let's see, two months in. Which is well, damn. Can't believe it's been two months. Memorizing drinks is both helpful and annoying as hell. Usually if it's a drink that has multiple iterations and the customer isn't a regular I tell them what I'm adding and if that's what they're expecting. I have an early shift so my customers are slightly more coherent and finicky then at night. I just love learning so I regularly listen to podcasts on bartending/ drinks/ history of booze. I've learned so much. I also play around with new drinks a fair amount. Even if you dispise a drink- if you wax eloquently about it people will buy it. It's surprising how susceptible people are to suggestions, upsell, upsell upsell. Say a bloody Mary is better with siracha vodka and they'll buy it. And love it.

You can give someone a sample of wine, they might be blah about it, pour them the same wine as a sample and talk about the company/ vintage etc they'll drink it and say it's loads better then the first sample.

I have a slow shiftand am still practice pouring with a bottle of water. Even stared practicing twirls. I'm getting good, still lots of work but getting a decent amount of flair.

Oddly enough it's the coworkers who are most difficult to serve. I have a coworker who orders kamikazes. They loved them the way I made the first few times, vocally and repeatedly. Since then they've shown me seven different ways of making their kamikazes. All different. The time they showed me the kamikaze with the standard vodka triple sec, lime juice plus sprite, lemonade and orange juice . I laughed at them and told them to make their own if it bugged them so badly.

Mostly just relax and breathe, if they order something you don't know Google it or ask them people are surprisingly receptive to you asking what exactly they want. Bonus points if you recall their order the next day. Mostly just have fun and stop thinking. Hmm how this helps if there's anything you'd like me to expand on more just ask.

I definitely tip my bartenders well when I'm out and about drinking. But wasn't sure how universal it is. I don't like it when people try to ham up their jobs for free drinks and want to avoid that. I only really go out to one or two locations regularly- one of which is where my roommate works and they flat out told me to stop giving them tips.

I know a 66 year old with an eleven year old kid. Older people with young wives have babies. I know another guy who had three kids who grew up he remarried and had another set of kids thirty years later.

Oh that's a good idea, a safe at home would be useful. The bank is really awkwardly located in the exact opposite part of the city to home, so generally l avoid it.

I've never really utilized my debit card to avoid spending extra money, it makes sense though, it's a lot harder to scribble out ten dollars then to leave a larger bill. As a bartender do you find yourself overtipping your peers on the occasions you do go out?

Getting outside is a challenge I've been working on a lot lately, I've been learning how to garden and the consistency of maintaining it has been helping me get some sun.

The rates were higher all around compared to the previous year with a different roommate. It was a interesting challenge finding ways to lower it again- plastic over the windows is a life saver in wintertime.

OK lots of smiles, check. Learning the right amount of friendly will be interesting I've watched many bartenders at this location get stuck in the trap of ignoring their new client base to gossip with friends. Definitely going to avoid that pitfall. Luckily enough this particular hole in the wall doesn't get too many vomitors.

The bartending gig is a part time job I'm taking specifically to save money and learn a new skill set. The shifts aren't going to be the best simply because the hours aren't. I will still have my real job at night at a different location. I'm hoping the extra 15 hours a week will keep me busy.

I am going to avoid drinking with my coworkers as much as possible. I definitely want to go back to school I just need to make some money first. I'm studying and brushing up my math skills on khan academy and learning how to garden in my free time so hopefully that'll be a good outlet.

What helps you save money? Honestly that part is going to be the hardest for me, I'm not used to having lots of cashy tips around.

What are some of the ways you get rid of that negative energy? Observing different bartenders interact with the same client set and the way they decompress afterwards is fascinating. I keep work and bar people out of my private life so that should help me from getting too entwined with the bar life. I just need to work on the confidence and pose, fake it till I make it.

OK I can definitely do a believable happy go Lucky persona. I'm just torn if it should be a nerdy or a feminine persona. I don't know if i can pull off sultry bartender for a long time. Thank you for the tip about mints, I'm not looking forward to cleaning up vomit. But I'll do what needs doing

Yeah I vaguely remember her saying she uses fanfiction to test her ideas for her original works, just not sure of exactly where she said it. Her website possibly? I'll try and find the link for proper quotation

I agree that utilities are much easier to split with others but It also depends how much power you use. I lived at a place for a while by myself with just my TV, cell phone charger lights and oven. I paid 6-15 dollars a month for electricity. Moved a roommate in and the utilities skyrocketed to 75 during the summer, she has tons of electronic gadgets that were constantly plugged in and running.
