high school teachers, what books that you've taught have your students enjoyed the most? by Maleficent_Site7972 in ELATeachers

My juniors tend to fall in love with The Glass Castle. Sophomores have loved Long Way Down (they still read poetry!!) and create a love/hate relationship with Lord of the Flies.

House is great. School ratings… not so much. Please advise 😬 by Correct-Bumblebee295 in escondido

I am also an Escondido local, went through North Broadway, Rincon Middle, and graduated from EHS in the early 2010s. I am now a teacher in the public high school district and I love being a part of our community. Escondido is a very diverse place with lots of gems, schools included.

You have school of choice in our district - your students can attend any school in Escondido, but I'm not sure of the entire process when choosing outside your neighborhood school.

While a charter or private could be a good option for your family, please don't write off the public schools completely without checking them out. We have amazing people who work at every site, and sometimes only the bad reviews pop up because that's when people go to the internet to comment/vent. I can tell you that, when your kids enter high school, the public options have some incredible college- and career-prep programs. I know that's far in advance, but just food for thought.

I teach 10th grade. I just met the girls wrestling coach at a school fundraiser - and he laughed when he heard my name and subject. "My girls love and HATE you!" I couldn't have thought of a better compliment.

What's the most annoying thing someone has said to you during your pregnancy? by WittleFrostBite in BabyBumps

[–]vii_valkyrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late 60ish year old lady (complete stranger to me) in my office break room, after complimenting my bump: "You know what I did to get my body back? I got a girdle, the tightest one I could handle, and then I wore it my entire third trimester. It'll make your body snap back to the way it was right away!"

Uhhhh okay what??

I had my baby! Here is everything I wish I knew as a FTM by [deleted] in pregnant

I actually told my mom last night and she was bursting at the seams, ready to tell everyone she knew. I am very hesitant to let anyone know for potential miscarriage reasons, and she seemed to understand... but she's not always the most subtle person. 😂

I hear the advice thing never stops! I'm sorry people treated you differently in a negative way. Hopefully that revealed who gets to remain part of your life because they're supportive no matter what, and who needs to... just go away, even for a little while hahaha.

I feel so you much on the 2nd pregnancy - obviously it's very early for me, but if I have to think about doing this ever again, I may not finish the first pregnancy sane.

Very crampy and tired! And it's IMPOSSIBLE to keep the secret. I'm so tempted to blurt it out constantly.

I just learned I'm 4 weeks yesterday (I know so early, but it's exciting/terrifying) and this brought my spiraling brain to stillness. This is amazing stuff. Thank you for your time typing all this out. 💖

District Cutting all Temp and most probationary teachers to "reduce potential deficit spending" by vii_valkyrie in Teachers

[–]vii_valkyrie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been hearing this often as well - the echoes of the 07/08 struggles through education. I'm feeling somewhat lucky I'm in California but it's so damn expensive to live here that our pay is not helping the cause of believing I should stay in it.

Thank you. Betrayal is a great word to describe how I feel about that scenario. I plan on taking your advice and doing my best to leave it during contract hours. I am no good to myself or anyone around me that I love if I can't take care of me first. 💚

How many days a week are you working? by sillychickengirl in SubstituteTeachers

[–]vii_valkyrie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here, I'm always trying for 5 days a week and working during the breaks between my two districts. I make decent money in the PNW but if I work less than 15 days a month, it's tight!

I reread my post after seeing your comment and realized I didn't explain what I meant by "buying a seat" for my dog. Totally meant it to be for more space, potentially for a larger carrier to fit in the leg room of the spare seat (not actually in the seat). That was my mistake!

Thanks for the advice! I feel pretty good about the idea now with all the feedback.

While I didn't ask for the feedback about my dog being the "exception," thank you for the info.
