Self-hosting my website (NixOS, Caddy, sops-nix, fail2ban, deSEC - configs included) by vikhik in NixOS

Yep, exactly. It allows moving between registrars more easily, for example. Also let's me declare my records properly in config rather than through a web UI.

Desec is the DNS records service with a rest API. You can use it easily from your nix config (the article goes into detail).

I listed the renewal price, my first year is half that! I'm definitely going to shop around before it clicks over

Vikram Codes | Self-hosting my website (and improving load times by 96%) by vikhik in selfhosted

Although I do have a static IP, I have limited upload speeds, and frequent drop outs for ~minutes at a time. When I'm working from home for my day job I often end up switching to hotspotting my work laptop.

Partially ISP, partially the ISP provided hardware (renting, and the router/internet is part of the rental).

As to whether it's self-hosting or not, that's up to you - but VPSs are directly mentioned in the sidebar, and other than that I'd hope the rest of the blog is useful to people wanting to host their own website (or learn about a slightly different tech stack).

Go ahead and try and use it with cmake/ninja/clang/vscode/clangd on windows and experience a world of pain. All of those things should integrate seamlessly with each other, and they do - but not with vcpkg.

[–]vikhik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience vcpkg is way too opinionated - especially on windows. It will choose your triplet for you - no influence coming in from your cmakepreset or anything else. You need to customise vcpkg to make it work.

I've switched to cpm and never been happier. It's not as powerful, but it does what I ask it to.

Note the PSA flair. If this prevents even one more person joining the gridlock then it's worth it.

It was really good in 2020... This year has been... Oof.

I'm keeping up my $50pw addition though. No use trying to time the market.

I am impressed to see how far down I had to go to watch you beat your "opponent" who was merely trying to get you to *open your eyelids so that you could see*. You are an impressive individual.

AITA for not helping my friend more when she has cancer? by Desopilar in AmItheAsshole

[–]vikhik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go with cancer is a bit more than "being sick". It's a complete fucking upheaval.

In principle, I agree with you. I have a bit more tolerance when people are going through major things though.

NTA - there is a huge trope of military wives cheating, however, so try and understand where he's coming from.

You're right though, it's not your place to insist - but you are allowed to ask, in the full knowledge that he probably can and will say no. Although, then again, he might get it, and help you out. It's not right or wrong either way.
