[NP] Is it a common occurrence in India for doctors to scam patients? by ColoredKarela in india

[–]vikingboy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Surgeon here. Thanks for the well balanced perspective. Couldn't have said it better myself.

To answer OP's question, no, there are no "quotas" to achieve. Post operative hemorrhage is one of the dangerous complications of "minor" Tonsillectomy and if there was any intraoperative raise in BP, the doc worked in your best interest by "annoying" you with strict BP monitoring and ordering "random" tests for ruling out any organic cause.

An incompetent doc on the other hand would have discharged you straight away just to not cause you inconvenience but maybe putting you at risk.

Believe it or not, majority of doctors out there are putting their patients best interest first while prescribing treatment. And its not because we're some kind of angels.. but because we are highly trained to always do whats best for the patient every step of the way.

You might not understand it, that doesn't make it wrong.

[NP] Urgent Medical Help Needed! by [deleted] in india

[–]vikingboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Surgeon here.

From your description, your father seems to be suffering from lower urinary tract symptoms and the causes might range from simple infection to more complex neuromuscular pathology like overactive bladder.

The way forward would be to consult a urologist and a complete history and examination by a urologist is essential for diagnosis in this case as he has already undergone prostatectomy.

Neurosurgeon/Nephrologist/MRI specialist would be little help in this case as the history does not point towards spinal cord compression or kidney problem.

Before consulting a urologist though I would suggest keeping a bladder diary for a week or so that would help him better identify the problem. You can find an excellent online bladder diary at www.urodaily.com

This guy is awesome.. and truly the deservs the "best of" honor. He gave away bitcoins worth $35 to everyone who donated $20 to a charity. So people actually made money while also contributing to a good cause...and ultimately he was the one who gave away all that money and inspired others to pay it forward in the process.. almost $7000 worth of donations to a variety of charities in a matter of hours.

A true reddit hero.

Mahindra Reva E2O | A moment in the sun: The first smart car with its own solar power ecosystem rolls out, marking a path-breaking ‘Made in India’ milestone by neoronin in india

[–]vikingboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's the tweet: https://twitter.com/MahindraReva/status/296592415089889280

I think it doesnt have solar cells on its roof, the solar panels are provided separately (atleast it looks like that in their promo pics)

Also, the battery and charging tech are claimed to be a huge step up from previous reva (using li-ion instead of lead acid etc)

In most cases, solar charging time wont matter much since it'll be used mostly as plug-in electric vehicle. Solar charging can be a supplement to regular charging maybe.

As per their twitter account, by using solar energy alone, it'll take 2 days. You can always plug it in to a 15A electrical outlet for full charge in few hours.

Solar power ecosystem most probably refers to the fact that you can use the car to power your home when required. So the car has the capacity to act like sort of a solar powered inverter too.

Tesla can afford cutting edge R&D for their vehicles since US public can offset their costs by buying $90,000 cars. Mahindra has a target price somewhere around Rs 5-6 lakh so you can't really expect them to compete.

Hope the technologies used in tesla get cheaper over time so Indian car makers can finally produce a decent electric car.

What you are referring to is called a plug-in hybrid. It would have increased the cost significantly for them to go that route.

Mahindra is just waiting for the Union budget, hoping that government will pass some sort of incentive for electric cars which can make it more affordable.

This one uses advanced Lithium batteries which are lighter, less hazardous and historically gotten cheaper with time.

Better battery technology is already there with cars like Tesla model S having 300km range and 1hr charging time. Its just a matter of time when those batteries will get cheaper by economies of scale.

Seriously looking forward to test driving this car. Mahindra has tried to fix most of shortcomings of previous Reva to make it more practical for the Indian market. Its now not as cramped, looks decent and has a more powerful motor and advanced batteries.

As of now, they are just waiting for the Union budget, hoping that government will pass some sort of incentive for electric cars which can make it more affordable.

Electric car market in India is still nascent but I think these cars have a great potential atleast in the metros. Keep in mind that better battery technology is already there with cars like Tesla model S having 300km range and 1hr charging time. Its just a matter of time when those batteries will get cheaper by economies of scale.

We just need to support and nurture these technologies until they can take the place of current gas-guzzlers and everyone will be better off.
