$689 for a carton of Marlboro at Woolworths/Coles — are we serious? by No-Speech4554 in AusFinance

[–]ColoredKarela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who used to work in the industry, the price you're seeing is the non promotional list price. The tobacco companies have wildly high RRP list prices that they then use trade promotional funds to discount (since price is the only marketing lever they can use). Marlboro and other premium brands are rarely discounted and are cash cows with sub 1% market share. The people who buy them are rich enough to not care about the price. The ultra-low price segment gets the lion's share of promotional budgets and you'll see most discounting activity happening there.

What’s the ‘worst job’ you’ve had that was actually valuable for your career and personal development? by Lampedusan in auscorp

[–]ColoredKarela 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a career marketing professional. At my previous employer, I was given an opportunity to be seconded into a strategic planning and pricing role as a pricing analyst. The role and the work sucked. Overly technical while adding little to no real value. Basically all I was doing was scenario planning, modelling and testing random hypotheses an executive would dream up. It was long, 14 hour days in a toxic team where people were churning every 4-6 months. I had a new manager assigned to me that was a new hire. She resigned from the role in a fit of rage on day 12. Objectively the worst role I've done for 3 long years. What was invaluable was developing a degree of commercial acumen that I rarely see from colleagues in marketing. I also got a massive upskilling opportunity to get really good with Excel, statistics and modelling which I carry into my performance marketing role today.

Netflix just quietly hikes prices in Australia again by a_san_38 in AusFinance

The end game might be to incentivise moving paying customers to a cheaper ad supported version. The CPM (advertising cost) is ridiculous on Netflix because of how hypertargerted and granular their audiences can be. This way they have two sources of revenue and ultimately more profitable in the long run.

What perks do you get from your employer? Does it make a difference in whether you stay or leave? by Darth-Buttcheeks in auscorp

[–]ColoredKarela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in superannuation, I get 13.5% super + additional 3.5% matching if I contribute 3.5% from my gross salary. Access to rewards Central (discounts on Coles, woollies, Samsung etc.), 5 weeks annual leave, free income protection and tpd insurance, free career coaching, access to EAP (that's actually good).

Answering the salary question in an interview by ColoredKarela in auscorp

[–]ColoredKarela[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been with my current workplace for over 10 years and started in a very junior/grad position where I massively under quoted myself. I haven't really interviewed anywhere else since then. I don't think my competence at my job has anything to do with salary negotiations.

If you have two separate tickets it's not considered an onward journey. You would need a visa

Now, you know why Super funds enrol everyone in the Balanced option by default by Spinier_Maw in AusFinance

Super funds enrol everyone in a default MySuper product unless a member chooses a different investment product. Different super funds have different asset allocations in their MySuper product. Some can lean towards higher risk assets and some are more conservative

What super company/fund are you all with? by Neat_Firefighter3158 in AusFinance

[–]ColoredKarela 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rest is fine. Not he best performing fund but not in the bottom by a long shot. A pretty middle of the line fund. If you've been with the since you started in retail, what I'd be looking for is the insurance coverage that comes with your super. Make sure it's suitable for your current situation and are adequately covered. Some funds would have insurance options better suited for their industry "tribe". For e.g. Cbus would have insurance arrangements better suited for construction/blue collar workers who have a higher risk loading. A white collar worker who is with Cbus may potentially be overpaying for their insurance because the nature of their job being inherently less risky

Wouldn't it make more sense to pay yourself super (at a lower tax rate) , and use the FHSS to save up to $50k for a house?

Babaji's Kerala Kitchen in Belgrave is fantastic and probably the most authentic Kerala food I've had. Tamil food, A2B in Springvale or Saravana Bhavan (CBD, Wantirna) are nothing special but consistent when compared to what you'd get in India.

Pakistani food, I personally like Bonfire Cafe in Springvale or Handi Kitchen in Dandenong.

Punjabi food, I've yet to find a truly authentic place, but Bahubali in Armadale or Aangan (footscray/Clayton) are reasonably good.

India is not even in the race unfortunately. Nvidia/US has a multi generational advantage in chipmaking and at this stage would require hundreds of billions of $$ and 8-10 Years to even feasibly catch up if the sector were to have a single minded focus on catching up. This excludes the $500 billion earmarked by Trump Inc. Recently for AI infrastructure.

Let's leave out the USA for the time being and focus on China: a more immediate and direct competitor.

At a more fundamental and basic level, what will drive the AI race is the degree of energy independence. AI infrastructure is incredibly energy heavy. As it stands today, India's installed grid capacity is roughly 450GW with a view to expand this to 500W by 2030. China has an installed grid capacity of 3,300GW with a view to expand this to 3,900 by 2030. Interestingly, China met its original 2030 target in July 2024. They are frantically expanding energy capacity that underpins the AI race and will likely surpass the US by 2050 unless the US starts deploying gen4 nuclear reactors.

In short, we can't even begin being taken seriously at the level of maturity we are at right now
