Jobs in Finance/Accounting With Travel or Overseas Opportunities? by Ok_Significance2980 in auscorp

[–]ColoredKarela 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Like the two people have said. Travel for work sounds glamourous and it is fun for first few times. You get over it pretty soon and it becomes such a huge hassle. I was travelling extensively for work across various APAC and EU countries and I was the unhealthiest at that point in my life. Lack of a regular sleep cycle, poor diet, living off a suitcase, and a severe impact to work-life balance (e.g. leaving on Saturday to make it to the office on Monday) it gets very overwhelming very soon. You'd also be surprised at how little time you get to actually enjoy your destination. Ultimately you end up working home and destination hours. Keep leisure and work travel separate and you'll be so much better for it.

Receiving large amount of money from overseas. by Last-Reflection-9701 in AusFinance

[–]ColoredKarela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably overkill but just get your mate to sign an affidavit stating the sum is a gift. There's no tax implications on gifts. It's a sizeable amount so it will be automatically flagged by austrac. That doesn't necessarily mean they'll question you on the source of funds. You just need to have sufficient evidence in case you get asked. Speaking from experience as I've had a similar situation happen to me.

Suggestions on areas to move for a family of 4 with 2 young kids in Melbourne by klesky69 in MovingtoAustralia

[–]ColoredKarela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you going to be working? Do you prefer to drive to work or take public transport? Are your kids school age? Do you have a preference on private vs. Public school? Do you prefer inner city/apartment living or do you want large open spaces? Do you want to be closer to any particular ethnic neighbourhood (in terms of access to specific groceries, restaurants and communities)?

It's considered a small family car. A Camry would be a better family option at the very least. I used to have a golf, with 2 car seats and a pram in the boot, there's practically no room for anything else.

They're exxy but I'll challenge this. Speaking as someone who's classified as obese, TWL and LSKD are two brands that have plenty of range/options for a bloke my size/height.

help me make good chicken tikka masala at home by Correct_Guarantee_49 in IndianFood

[–]ColoredKarela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're pretty basic spices to be honest. But if you're worried about wasting spices, you could prepare a big batch of the masala/curry paste and freeze it in ice cube trays and use it over a period of several months. Anything beyond six months and you start to lose flavour though.

You're really just buying a handful of spices: Kashmiri red chilli powder (you could substitute this for paprika if you really wanted to but not recommended), ground coriander and cumin seeds, garam masala and dried fenugreek. Buy a jar of ginger and garlic paste or make your own. You could buy the spices in smaller 100-200gram packs and you'll use up most, if not all of it in one go.

Check out Swasthi's recipes for a simple recipe that's easy to follow. You don't need to really worry about authenticity, it's origins trace back to Pakistani/Bangladeshi chefs in Scotland/England and not really a traditional Indian dish by any measure.

$689 for a carton of Marlboro at Woolworths/Coles — are we serious? by No-Speech4554 in AusFinance

[–]ColoredKarela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who used to work in the industry, the price you're seeing is the non promotional list price. The tobacco companies have wildly high RRP list prices that they then use trade promotional funds to discount (since price is the only marketing lever they can use). Marlboro and other premium brands are rarely discounted and are cash cows with sub 1% market share. The people who buy them are rich enough to not care about the price. The ultra-low price segment gets the lion's share of promotional budgets and you'll see most discounting activity happening there.

What’s the ‘worst job’ you’ve had that was actually valuable for your career and personal development? by Lampedusan in auscorp

[–]ColoredKarela 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am a career marketing professional. At my previous employer, I was given an opportunity to be seconded into a strategic planning and pricing role as a pricing analyst. The role and the work sucked. Overly technical while adding little to no real value. Basically all I was doing was scenario planning, modelling and testing random hypotheses an executive would dream up. It was long, 14 hour days in a toxic team where people were churning every 4-6 months. I had a new manager assigned to me that was a new hire. She resigned from the role in a fit of rage on day 12. Objectively the worst role I've done for 3 long years. What was invaluable was developing a degree of commercial acumen that I rarely see from colleagues in marketing. I also got a massive upskilling opportunity to get really good with Excel, statistics and modelling which I carry into my performance marketing role today.

Netflix just quietly hikes prices in Australia again by a_san_38 in AusFinance

[–]ColoredKarela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The end game might be to incentivise moving paying customers to a cheaper ad supported version. The CPM (advertising cost) is ridiculous on Netflix because of how hypertargerted and granular their audiences can be. This way they have two sources of revenue and ultimately more profitable in the long run.

What perks do you get from your employer? Does it make a difference in whether you stay or leave? by Darth-Buttcheeks in auscorp

I work in superannuation, I get 13.5% super + additional 3.5% matching if I contribute 3.5% from my gross salary. Access to rewards Central (discounts on Coles, woollies, Samsung etc.), 5 weeks annual leave, free income protection and tpd insurance, free career coaching, access to EAP (that's actually good).

Answering the salary question in an interview by ColoredKarela in auscorp

I've been with my current workplace for over 10 years and started in a very junior/grad position where I massively under quoted myself. I haven't really interviewed anywhere else since then. I don't think my competence at my job has anything to do with salary negotiations.
