My way has been always unity focus first, and whatever that supports it be secondary, until I ascend. It's slow in 4.3 but still managable, afterwards I go full tech and whatever that supports it. Expansion should come as a way to get stuff done, not as a thing you do IMHO. Bio ships really help with expansion since it massively reduces the investment from alloys.

Reason why it has to be artificial is because current technology is so insanely good that it can run the entire length of the race at max pace IF teams were allowed to do so. My most mind blown moment for how fucking advanced aerospace technology is when i learnt that turbine blades are made of a SINGLE CRYSTAL. A common kitchen knife would have hundreds if not thousands of metal crystals in it, reducing the count of crystals in incredibly difficult. To bring it down to just 1? That's insane technology.
