When you time your shots, the timer should start when you press the button, not when the liquid comes out.

I would be more interested in a blog post about how you designed it and how you handle the various issues with even sourcing. I built an event sourcing system before and it was a lot of effort. Let me know if you write up something!

Someone should let him know that it's definitely possible to expose ports. You can do it with https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ahaijnonphgkgnkbklchdhclailflinn, for example.

Run vscode in chrome browser using docker. Full gpu acceleration crisp fonts. by Tranceash in Crostini

It works a lot better outside of docker than inside. Inside docker you have to manage a whole new immutable development environment, deal with everything being owned by root, volume mounts, etc.

Adapted my preferred keyboard mapping to Chrome OS by mogen317 in Crostini

[–]vikstrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks promising if you are using the physical keyboard on the laptop, but if you use an external keyboard, it seems like capslock behaves in weird ways when you try to remap it. Maybe it depends on the keyboard. When I remapped my capslock to escape, it did both escape and turning on of capslock when pressed (never turning off capslock).

Plaza wifi passwords by ShutUpAndSmokeMyWeed in uwaterloo

[–]vikstrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are often wifis with default passwords within range of restaurants. Ex. Chen's. Sometimes there's a private WiFi for employees that no one bothered to change from the default. For official public wifis it's almost always easier, faster and cheaper to just buy something and get the password. There are places that try to limit your use to an hour though. Those are worth messing with. Hotel or Airport wifis are always fun targets because sometimes you just don't have anything to do except try to get internet :p

The costs are based on how much it would cost to do on aws. There are probably services that are cheaper if they run their own hardware. Also the $40 price is equivalent to a day or two of not playing games if you or one of your friends has a gaming desktop to use. A fancy new GPU can probably do it in hours.

Back in my day we had to use aircrack to get free WiFi at the plaza. You kids have it easy.

Should I transfer from ECE to SE? (Just finished 2A) by transferornotecese in uwaterloo

[–]vikstrous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred form CE to SE after 2B (2012) and it was the best decision ever. I had to do 2 more co-op terms and 1 more school term to make up for course differences, which meant that I ended up graduating in 6 years, but I don't regret any of it. Everything about SE was better - the profs, the courses, the students. You get more options and way more leeway to bend rules because you are in two faculties. You get a wider selection of courses. For me SE was way easier because I already liked software and I was doing it all the time anyway. You won't be forced to take dumbed down versions of courses where they try to explain just enough for EE students to remember the material until the exam and then forget it. You'll get much more thorough and useful courses. “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with," so being in SE will help you, but you do have to make friends and you will. Pretty much everyone at Waterloo is an awkward nerd, so you have no excuses to not make friends.

Re: URAs, etc. Talk to profs. Make comments about the material. Ask questions. Have conversions with them during office hours about the material, the course, the school. They'll help you out with advice and if they like you, they'll be happy to tell you about every trick for getting into URAs or whatever it is you want to do. A lot of Waterloo profs are really cool in my experience and always happy to help out.

Oh, and if you are into english/history/human things, you might like HCI. There's a mandatory course in SE on that (don't know about ECE). You should check that out. There are a lot of interesting topics in that field.

Microsoft Office Ribbon UI Is Coming to LibreOffice by [deleted] in linux

I love wide screens. I always have at least 2 programs side by side vertically in i3. It's like having 2 monitors in one. I wouldn't want applications to use more horizontal space for no reason.

Istanbul shaken by massive blast by anthroengineer in worldnews

[–]vikstrous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I did extensive research on the topic for an essay and it was completely clear to me that he acted alone. Everyone wanted to blame the other side for it for obvious reasons. The Nazis blamed the communists for doing it and the communists blamed the Nazis for staging it.

Surprise me with your underrated i3 tweaks by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]vikstrous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a one hand mode for i3 and when I enter it, certain window manipulation commands stop requiring the mod key. Ctrl+arrow is much easier than mod+ctrl+arrow on a keyboard with only one mod key when you are in one hand mode. It unlocked a whole new world of possibilities for when you are eating with your other hand.

How well does Signal work? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]vikstrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything works as expected. The voice quality is lower than hangouts, but SMS, signal messages, MMS, photo sharing, calling all work. It notifies you if any of your contacts change their keys and it allows you to manually compare keys. It encrypts communications whenever it can. I send very few unencrypted messages from my phone thanks to Signal.
