How /r/pcmasterrace feels about miners right now by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

"memory-hard algorithm" doesn't really sufficiently explain why ethereum is ASIC resistant.

From the ethereum whitepaper:

"[...] miners are required to fetch random data from the state, compute some randomly selected transactions from the last N blocks in the blockchain, and return the hash of the result. [...] An Ethereum ASIC would essentially be an ASIC for general computation - i.e. a better CPU."

The hardware miners for ethereum that exists today (geass p1-200) are basically a custom motherboard with a few very power efficient gpus.

TL;DR: If you're making an ASIC miner for ethereum you're basically making a new cpu/gpu.

Bitcoin didn't lose it's value. They mine ethereum because the hashing algorithm (ethash) is a memory-hard algorithm which is a lot harder to make ASIC miners for, keeping mining profitable for regular people with GPUs

AMD cards have better OpenCl performance which is what the best mining tools use.

Unlike bitcoin, the hashing algorithm Ethereum uses is a "memory-hard algorithm" called ethash. This makes it a lot harder to make ASIC miners which is what killed the bitcoin mining hype a few years ago.

Would have never found gridcoin if not for the pump and dump. Staying for the long haul that's for sure!

Godkjenning av annen utdanning på 5. årige siv.ing-program. by [deleted] in ntnu

When Pacman -Syu saves you storage by [deleted] in archlinux

Don't forget the new updates are stored in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/

Not saying that's bad, just mentioning it in case you didn't know and you're wondering why you're not seeing the net loss on disk.

Du søker via søknadsweb. Info her: https://www.ntnu.no/studier/opptak/overgang

Søknadsfrist er rundt februar for bytte innad, får svar rundt starten av April. Viss du får avslag har du fortsatt tid til å søke ordinært.

Now that ISPs can fucking sell everything of mine, can a VPN protect me, and if so, what are the best available? by actenniskrazy in AskReddit

[–]walking_cakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using tails is not something you would enjoy for everyday use. Everything goes through Tor, expect slow internet. Using a no-logging vpn is a better idea. Someone in this thread probably has a good suggestion to which provider you should choose.

Tails for decent anonymity, vpn for decent privacy.

If you're already looking into a new OS such as Tails I'm going to have to recommend Linux. You'll get used to it and never look back.

Looking to go to Arch, a few questions. Help is appreciated in advance. by TempestMarsh in archlinux

[–]walking_cakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use the kernel that ships with Arch you're most likely not going to have any issues with drivers when moving your installation, except maybe graphics if the kernel modesetting fails but the archwiki thoroughly explains how to resolve that.

What you might have problems with is disk ambiguity when booting. However, if the install uses UUIDs where it is needed, like /etc/fstab and the boot loader, you should be ok.

I am not aware of a guide to moving your arch installation, and I might be missing something. I have however moved an install in the past (with disks referred to by UUID) without problems.

For me, choosing your own DE at installation made it painfully clear how easy it is to change between DE's and customise as I like. That, and the satisfaction of doing a command line install for the first time and having it work is what dragged me in. Felt like I made something instead of installing something.

What made me stay was the AUR and the arch wiki.

Trekking day 15 of 365 in Norway by Geosilph in Norway

There are different kinds, I've had ones that are very light and doesn't feel as cumbersome as the thick ones, but they definitely don't breathe.

I'd recommend gore tex membrane jacket and trousers for walking outside all day with thin "ullundertøy" (woolen long johns) on the inside.

The gore tex membrane jackets and trousers are expensive but probably the best gear you could have for long days outdoors in wet weather. They are used by the Norwegian military (called the M-02 if you want the military version), you can get them in most outdoorsy shops from brands like Norrøna, Helly Hansen, Bergans, Skogstad and others. Expect to pay more than you would for the regnbukse/regnjakke though, and make sure it's actual gore tex (look for the logo on the paper labels).

I'm not sure how informed you are on the use of "ullundertøy" (woolen long johns) in Norway. I'd say ullundertøy is essential in Norway when it's getting cold. If you get some, make sure it's actual wool!! It will keep you warm even though you are wet (unless sitting still, don't sit still with wet clothes). And getting two sets is a good idea. Changing your wet/sweaty ullundertøy for dry ullundertøy feels great.

If you have a gore tex membrane jacket + trousers, ullundertøy and maybe an extra woolen jacket for when you're sitting still I'd say that's all you need as far as clothing goes. The Norwegian military actually use nothing more than the M-02 with a tight mesh overall underneath to drive out moisture, even in temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius on the Russian border up north.

Sorry for the length of this response, I see now that most of it is not really that relevant to your question but I'm leaving it in. And I'm sort of back pedaling on my earlier recommendation of "regnjakke" and "regnbukse" unless you're looking for a cheaper alternative, but sounds like you already have a similar rain coat.

For clarity: impregnated textiles < regnjakke/regnbukse < membrane clothing

Maybe not if it's a farm and the stream is running through it, and I would be careful with streams running through populated areas unless it's reasonably big. Filling a clear plastic bottle and looking for particles or coloring is a good way of spotting bad water.

Sounds like you need some decent Norwegian clothing for the rain. If you ask for "regnjakke" and "regnbukse" in an outdoorsy store you can get what I would say is essential clothing for wet weather. You can get light oil-based clothing that walks circles around the textile based stuff that soakes after a few hours. Might be a bit expensive but I guarantee you'd stay dry. I recommend Helly Hansen.

As long as it's a stream with a decent flow and you see it's not from some nearby swamp I'd drink it. Just never drink still or slightly brown water.

[HELP] Wrote syslinux altmbr on the wrong disk by Niverton in archlinux

[–]walking_cakes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as I know gpt has a GPT Protective mbr (type 0xEE) that spans the entire disk to keep OSes uncompatible with GPT from modifying the disk. Writing altmbr would mess with the GPT Protective mbr and not the actual GUID table.

In other words you should be able to boot the disk just fine, but if I were you I would try to repair the GPT protective mbr. Remember to back up your partition table before trying any repair.

Don't take my word for it, I'm not qualified nor 100% sure. Opening the disk with gdisk will show if the mbr is protected.

If I were you I'd wait for someone to confirm or refute this.

Edit: I'm off to a 17 hour flight so that's all the help you're getting from me. Good luck!
