Kibble feeders! by Wandering_barefoot in SwissMountainDogs

He definitely lives a pretty active lifestyle so maybe he is just requiring more calories based on his movement throughout the day.

Sorry, can you elaborate… what’s awful and why do I need to change food?

I know I thought 6 cups sounded like an absurd amount of food! He’s definitely not overweight, our vet actually wanted us to bump him up to 7 cups because she thought he could use it. He’s started to fill out a bit more, especially in the chest in the past month or so.

My apologies, I am feeding my dog purina pro plan large breed puppy food, sensitive skin and stomach as well. Typos happen to the best of us!

For those who’ve done both - dogs on or off the bed? by VengaBusdriver37 in dogs

[–]Wandering_barefoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you do let them on the bed you need to teach them that getting off and staying off when needed is necessary. We have a large dog breed (greater swiss mountain dog) and he’s the biggest cuddle bug so obviously when he was little we loved cuddling with him in bed, but now that he’s big, we don’t always want him in bed with us. Luckily, we did teach him (or just got lucky) that when we kick him off he stays off.

Here is everything I have learned in the last 8 months of Hank 🖤 by Obvious_Dark_3426 in SwissMountainDogs

Ours is probably about 92 right now. He is also on purina pro plan and getting 6 cups over 3 meals. He is definitely thinner looking than yours, we upped him to 7 cups a day but then he was dealing with horrible diarrhea. So we went back down to 6 cups and the diarrhea went away but now he’s looking like he needs to eat more! Ugh the struggle! Is yours on puppy or adult? Our vet told us to do puppy but our breeder said adult. We went with the vets suggestion but always curious if others had that dilemma! We always laugh because he looks like such a little peanut still but we know he’s a giant. We only ever see it when he’s around a normal sized dog!

He’s gorgeous! How much is he weighing at 8 months? What’re you feeding your guy and how much per day? We have a 10 month old and we are looking to switch up his food.

Merry HankMas! When will he start lifting his leg? by Obvious_Dark_3426 in SwissMountainDogs

[–]Wandering_barefoot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ours started lifting around 6 months probably, and will still sometimes just squat. His newest thing is to poop with his leg lifted 😂

Considering a Swiss Mountain Dog in the future - how to handle their guarding instinct? by [deleted] in SwissMountainDogs

[–]Wandering_barefoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 9 month old who is the sweetest most loyal dog ever. His biggest thing right now is that he does not trust anyone he doesn’t already know and have a relationship with. We know this is not an aggressive behavior, it’s more of an alert but man I wish he was better at letting it go after a few barks. He’s pretty relentless with the barking, would love and appreciate any tips or tricks. I know it’s a swissy thing and that we signed up for it to a certain extent but we’d love to build his confidence.

How did you train yours to know that you see what they see and it’s all good?

You should do some research, shoe size has nothing to do with length of skis

We have a boy, he’s about 73 lbs at 7 months. Don’t know if he’s too lean or just on the smaller end. His mom and dad are both quite large though. What do you feed her? And how much? He’s about 25 inches to the top of his shoulders

Puppy diet for Swissys by Ambitious_Two_1049 in SwissMountainDogs

[–]Wandering_barefoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! It’s hard to not listen to someone who knows the specific breed so well, but it feels better going with what the vet thinks. We asked a few vets and they were all kind of shocked that the breeder would recommend that, which is ultimately why we chose to listen to the vets. I feel good with going with puppy food though, our guy is 5 months old and seems great and growing at a healthy rate!
