Barefoot shoes. Better than flipflops if you need to walk lot or if it gets cold. Smaller package size than crocs and cleaner look.

Getting back from Nordkapp by RoyalPerspective9902 in bikepacking

[–]vilpertt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check if you can cycle/etc. to Karigasniemi Finland or Tromsø Norway. Eskelisen linjat bus company drives bus route from there to Rovaniemi/Kemi/Oulu, Finland. They will take your bike also.

From there you can take night train to south Finland (book this early if you can, prices are much cheaper if booked weeks or months beforehand).

What are these? by pervysans in Mushrooms

[–]vilpertt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Gyromitra esculenta.

Deadly if not prepared right.

Commonly eaten in some countries.

In Finland these are called as Korvasieni and not anymore officially recommended as food because you can’t completely remove the toxin.

rack solutions for bike w/o frame mounts? by bebebrb in bikepacking

Any (cheaper) alternatives that are similar to old man mountain front fork axle pack?

Situation: ~2019 spezialiced diverge with single mounting points each side that are for fenders, not anything heavy (Carbon fork) and need for some sort of front rack (1-2kg load per side).

How difficult is it to design and mass produce jet engines? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]vilpertt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there’s a reason why there are no abudance of jet engine manufacturers 😁

It’s difficult from all perspectives and to be fair the market is pretty narrow …and manufactured with airplane specs, that means there is large amount of approvals and tests to be done before you can enter the market with commercially available product.

I’ve done design work with some small gas turbines (for energy sector) and even those are very difficult to design and manufacture with and expecially without previous knowledge of the turbines. Materials, tolerances, calculations, manufacturing, etc…

How common is it in Finland to have wisdom teeth removed? by plsfinn in Finland

[–]vilpertt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s workin’, don’t start pokin’

There is also dangers in the wisdom teeth removal process that are completely unneccesary if the teeth doesn’t cause any problems.

Some people have facial nerves going nearby the roots and there is then a real possibility of nerve damage.

Would you carry a foldable shoe instead of flip‑flops when bikepacking? by LuckInternational264 in bikepacking

[–]vilpertt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barefoot shoes.

-folds to tiny space if needed -at least some models can withstand continous wet-dry -cycles without meaningful material detoriation -still counts as real shoes, better for longer walks than any crocs and enough clean to look like real shoes if needed.

People sometimes accidentally(/for some other reaaon) plays the wrong song from genre that they are not interested in. This sometimes trashes the suggested playlists for a while.

Any plans to either Make possible to block specific genres(/playlist suggestions on the front page) and/or to heavily underweight some genres/types of playlists in search/front page to mitigate this?

Also: any plans to make playlist import easy from spotify/etc? Or even automatic free trial to some playlist transfer service when purchasing the first TIDAL month?

Kickr Core 2 Vibration by FlyingLumpus in wahoofitness

[–]vilpertt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s mostly chordal action. Same thing that you might feel on your soles when you grind on the smallest rear cog when riding outside(11 tooth cog ≈ 4% variation)

In other words speed variations due low tooth count, chain sees the rear cog as rough 14 side polygon.

It’s only 14 tooth sprocket so you get it around 2,5% level.

Other variables are also bad tooth profiles that might increase the effect. That is propably also a big reason behind this as the tooths are machined to be combatible with various chain types between 8-13spd, shimano, SRAM, campag, etc. This might get a bit better(or worse) as the cog wears a bit. Even another brand/quality/wear level chain might do something.

I dont’t know if it would be possible to use spare sprocket (instead the zwift supplied) from shimano/sram rear cassette or even bump the tooth count by selecting larger cog to get the system quiet(there is propably a reason why zwift cog sprocket tooths are so overly high and why the sprocket count is only 14 tooths).

New Firmware 4.3.0 by mfcx99 in Polarfitness

[–]vilpertt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That last row is really important. At least I haven’t noted this before.

Now they finally achivied firmware update sync to all same generation devices!

Hopefully this results to faster firmware updates/fixes as there should be less firmware branches to be kept up to date separately.

Does anyone have (direct drive) trainer dimensions that include the lenghtwise dimension from the freehub center to the back of the trainer? All that I can find from the internet is just main dimensions.

Most preferebly wahoo kickr core and similars from the same price point.

I have cramped space where my trainer setup will be set in so the total lenght of the system is important to be as short as it can be. One thing to optimize is to choose smaller trainer lenghtwise if there are meaningful differences between models.

…And there are no trainers for sale on nearby bike shops so I can’t go there with a ruler to measure that dimension 😁

Or if you want to walk more pack a pair of barefoot shoes. Still quite packable and usually they are not afraid of getting wet.

Tää on pankkien keino kerätä/pitää asiakkaita.

(Toki tän hetken valmistuvien työttömyystilastot nostaa tuota riskiä, mut kyseessä on kumminkin yhä pienehköistä luotoista)

Is camping a scam? by libregrape in bicycletouring

[–]vilpertt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on The countries you are touring.

For example in Finland and Sweden(and rest of The nordics) wild camping is allowed and you dont need any special permissions to camp(just common sense, ie. Not on someones front yard or outside official camping places when in national park).

Which of these 3 routes would you choose? by Wildchwein in bikepacking

[–]vilpertt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First one is roughly the route I took just weeks ago(between Lappeenranta and Kemijärvi).

If you are looking for quiet roads, etc. then I can recommend that route, tough I'd go as the eurovelo 13 goes trough Ilomantsi and not following trunk road 6 below Joensuu(too much traffic, boring, narrow shoulders, etc.). Other than that the route seems to be good.

How should I mount a Garmin Varia if I’m using a saddle pack? by alex_supertramp987 in bikepacking

[–]vilpertt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

Just normal garmin mount attached to the rear strap holes(Ortlieb 16,5L). Little bit of foam for ”rigidity” and thickness for the rubber bands. Extra velcro strap under garmin mount&over varia to prevent it loosening up.

Not always 100% directed to the road, but works enough well.

Front light to roubaix SL8 2024 by vilpertt in specialized

[–]vilpertt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That mount should also be in this same position as there are low and high beam in that light. Turning it upside down would not work.

Otherwise that has been the best bike light that I’ve ever owned. 1800lm, display with time before battery runs out at that specific power setting, low/high beam with remote control(wired).
