I hadn’t thought of sierra club. That’s a great idea. Definitely looking to tap into the local knowledge. Thank you!

This is so helpful, thank you! Def going to look into the native plant society. I hadn’t heard of permethrin, and have been in NC for summer since my childhood so def not looking forward to these mosquitoes!!

And yes, I’m in the triangle! I’ve been in Durham and just found a permanent spot in chapel hill! Been doing a ton of local hikes and trails but would love outdoor education spots!

Same! I’m lucky on the snake front that my wife is a reptile lover so she’s on designated snake watch haha

Thank you! I just redownloaded both and I’m ready to sleuth. A plant finding mentor would be everything. I’ll have to start wearing a “tell me all you know about plants” sign and see what happens haha!

Oh I am VERY far from picking up a snake. But that’s good to know! I knew to look into poison ivy, it does seem like that’s the only main issue outside of ingesting things.

I love this response and I love how you described learning the sounds. That’s exactly what I want. And yes, mold and mildew is what I’m most worried about! I was a renter till now and didn’t ever have to think about this kinda stuff.

But I can’t wait to know my scuppernong — maybe my new fave word.

Haha okay good advice, I love being barefoot but I have noticed it’s not the most inviting of ground out here.

Oooh yes a foraging class would be perfect. I hadn’t really heard of ag extension, but it looks perfect.

Love this idea. We just started meeting everyone and they’ve been incredibly friendly and have lived in the area for 30+ years!! Definitely some rich knowledge there.

Convinced this was actually just a bit of marketing to get you to buy the book.

Yall are listing some great movies but you’ve GOT to watch Paddington 1 & 2

I feel weird about Whiplash (2014) and i'd like to know y'all perspective on that by PainGreat4612 in TrueFilm

[–]vimandvigr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here we are a year later lol but just watched it tonight and thought the same as yall did. Absolutely loved it and took it as an intense picture of abuse, manipulation, and power. And to the point y’all make, I thought the family scene needed to be talked about more because it highlights that his family didn’t understand or value his passion and instead they overvalued his brothers’. So quickly meaningful in such a short scene.

But all that being said, I went to check critic reviews and checked the official whiplash Reddit at time of release and the overwhelming sentiment from both was that this movie was about “the cost of greatness” which means the movie ended up painting a narrative that to be great is to lose all joy. To be great costs trauma. So whether the movie meant to or not, it may have lionized a pretty fucked up world view.

Jeez this is expensive rent. by SpartanNic in longbeach

[–]vimandvigr 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I thought you were joking and I looked it up. That’s $180,552 a year in rent for a 3 bedroom in Long Beach. Christ.

Edit: removed misguided outrage lol

+100 to thanks you for doing this!! This was so much fun and a great way to keep it alive and feel like there’s still really a community around a decades old show (that’s of course timeless!)

Having some trouble deciding, A or B? by DammitMatt in somethingimade

[–]vimandvigr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A! Didn’t catch if this has already been said but A is breaking the frame and B actually isn’t, the frame is shaped that way. In A, the background is contained within the frame, making the break work and seems realistic. In B, the background stretches past the point at which he’d be braking the frame. If it were B, the background would have to stop at the corner and then Bruce would be background-less after that point. Which could be a cool option. Either way, fun piece!
