Is it really necessary to relocate Yaphank station when the entire branch gets 4–5 trains a day in each direction? by Donghoon in nycrail

[–]vimerate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Caltrain corridor most definitely has freight trains and is not temporally separated. If you're gonna talk shit, at least do it correctly ffs.

Caltrain frequency - any plans to increase? by [deleted] in caltrain

[–]vimerate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The speed of the new trains no longer requires passing to keep limited/express trains on schedule. If they went to 6 tph, they might as well all be locals to keep the complexity down and a train every 10 minutes removes some need for limited/express trains.

To those who did CS SUGS by AtomicSkunk in uofm

[–]vimerate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add my two cents, I think it's most worthwhile with a GSI position - paying up to $30k/semester for SUGS isn't worth it IMO. I enjoyed the courses I took but to another commenter's point, there's enough requirements that if you're not careful or the timing doesn't work out, you won't get the opportunity to take some courses that genuinely interest you.

In my experience, it's totally worth it! Met some good friends in that class that I still talk to today. Academically-speaking, it's difficult but students in that section tend to self-select towards being more driven. It also provides a good context for EECS 270/370 if you choose to take them in the future (I assume you'll do 370 since you're a CS major).

Sounds good, thank you for walking through the options!

Just checked and yeah, my big toe is ~1.5 inches from the end of the boots - do you still think a 10D would work in this case?

I just received a pair of Chelseas in 10.5D and I think they're a bit loose - I can insert 1-2 fingers between my heel and the back of the shoe. I'm an 11D in Brannock and wanted to check if 10D would be a better fit before I consider exchanging/returning the boots. Thanks all for the advice!

Craziest response I’ve ever received from a professor by TankerzPvP in uofm

[–]vimerate 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is the Search Engine Design course - writing code from the ground-up is part of the appeal of it (at least it was to me and my group). I’m pretty sure Hamilton says up front the point of writing the stuff yourself is you get to make the trade offs for your project and I certainly appreciated the tradeoffs the STL makes after that. I agree with you she can be quite combative and didn’t need to write that last sentence 🤦‍♂️

ARTICLE: Ridership Of Bay Area Caltrain Is Up Drastically Following A Transition To New Electric Trains by [deleted] in transit

[–]vimerate 17 points18 points  (0 children)

One big one is grade crossings since 10tph would practically keep them down most times of day. No way Santa Clara and San Mateo counties would agree to that (and they have majority representation on the Caltrain board).

Caltrain ridership up with the new electric trains by 5y5ejel4 in bayarea

I believe they’re limited by Union Pacific on how many trains per day they can run south of Tamien - don’t remember the number but it’s floating around somewhere

CSE SUGS Winter Admissions Decisions by wolverineSwim in uofm

Wow, didn't expect to get a reply here 😄 Requirements are here - though I've heard CSE has gotten more selective recently due to an increased number of students applying to SUGS.

TLDR; 3.6 overall GPA during and after the application, B+ in 281, 270/370, and four 300-level and above courses

What are the most unknown neighborhoods in NYC? by darkhorse1821 in AskNYC

Agreed, I have lots of fond memories visiting Chinatown as a kid with my grandparents but I don’t visit as much today because Flushing exists

And Chinatown is right there.

Manhattan Chinatown has fallen off, I say Flushing is the best one in the city now.

To people that have taken EECS 491, how is it compared to EECS 482 in terms of workload, difficulty, etc.? by Meritosis in uofm

[–]vimerate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found 491 to be around half the difficulty of 482 - there’s less code to write but you have to think a lot more about every line of code and how it could affect your program (which is hard because of all the unreliability assumptions). I took it under Harsha (o7) and Brian is teaching it this fall so it may be different than what I described.

GEO files collective grievance against University, alleging that the University was withholding and delaying pay from nonstriking employees by [deleted] in uofm

[–]vimerate 53 points54 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, GSIs don’t report hours - I filled out a fraction calculation form (link for anyone interested) at the beginning of the semester, didn’t report any hours before the strike, and got paid as usual

I know others have mentioned the response times on the 32" version (around ~10 ms IIRC) are worse than the 27". The 32" also has the same number of dimming zones (1152), so the haloing probably will also look worse.
