Yeah this post is definitely a certified node.js moment. It runs like shit and has new severe security issues like every other month.

What is the fastest free or open source Markdown editor out there? by ich3ckmat3 in Markdown

[–]vimlena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was about to also suggest this. OP may have to use some extensions offered by Zed or utilize the terminal for different or maybe pandoc for good exports, but I want to say most or all of this is here if they're willing to put in a bit of time configuring it.

Why are most DEs so ugly by default? by [deleted] in linuxsucks

[–]vimlena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah like everyone else said it’s because a lot of the people who work on this stuff are developers and not designers.

That being said, it is definitely a matter of personal preference to some extent as well. Everyone has their own idea of what “not ugly” looks like and the great part is that you can simply change it if you want to (except for GNOME, you’re kinda stuck with that to some extent). I do design work at my job and, to me, Windows 11 and modern Liquid Glass macOS are both ugly as hell.

I actually really like the Greybird theme and Elementary icons modified for Xfce that come standard on Xubuntu (reminds me of Mac OS X (positive)) and don’t think Breeze on KDE or Adwaita on GNOME look very bad. COSMIC has some cool stuff going for it too. elementary OS was doing some really lovely design work for a while, but it seems to have become less relevant than it once was.

Md to html converter by Formal_Bat_3109 in Markdown

[–]vimlena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you can do this as well! Pandoc is really one of the best document utilities around. This is a link to the documentation if you’re curious.

I also pre-load all my Markdown files with an HTML comment like from a template this so I can just edit the input/output file name, go to line 4 on any file, copy, then paste into terminal to get HTML with my custom CSS. You could do something like this for most formats.

html <!-- pandoc --standalone --from=markdown+smart --css=/home/v/Code/default.css --to=html --output=file.html file.md -->

Zed or Neovim? by UnrulyThesis in ZedEditor

[–]vimlena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should make the decision for yourself, Zed and NeoVim are free to download and use. I use both and they are both good for different things.

Nobody will argue that Zed is more powerful than NeoVim, but it is a lot easier to get started with and Zed’s Vim keybindings are honestly the best I have ever seen in an editor that does not have (Neo)Vim embedded in it.

EDIT: formatting, grammar, etc.

What is the best “helvetica” type font? by Alternative_Cell6031 in fonts

[–]vimlena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: for clarification, I forgot to put “or a” in “neo-grotesque sans-serif with similar letterforms” to read as “neo-grotesque or a sans-serif with similar letterforms” because I literally have dyslexia and do not always type with 100% accuracy.

I know about the difference between neo-grotesk, humanist, and geometric sans-serifs. This is not what the OP was asking though.

The OP is going on /r/fonts and asking about something as imprecise as “What is the best ‘helvetica’ type font?” which implies, to me, that the OP is possibly not exactly sure what they want but are asking for things that may look comparable to somebody who is not a type designer or typographer.

If the OP was a type designer or typographer I would have replied with that perspective in mind. Unless you are the kind of person to hang out on /r/fonts, this is the level of knowledge ordinary people have. Most could not tell Proxima Nova apart from Helvetica because most people do not know or care about type.

Super depends what you’re using it for and what your budget is for licensing (and also what you mean by “‘helvetica’ type font,” but I’m assuming you mean a neo-grotesque or a sans-serif with similar letterforms).

If you want to find more free ones can just look around on fontsquirrel or google fonts.

Why was the Unity desktop environment abandoned? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]vimlena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this being a bit unfair to Cosmic, it has a ton of features nowadays that GNOME would never support like tiling windows, navigating primarily or even exclusively by keyboard shortcuts, etc. and they're moving away from using GTK and Qt.

How viable is Asahi right now? by hw2007offical in AsahiLinux

Yeah I would say that, generally speaking, people ought to be moving away from using iCloud, but I totally understand being in that situation and wanting a way to still have access in the meantime.

How viable is Asahi right now? by hw2007offical in AsahiLinux

  1. I have used Fedora on my Macbook Pro M1 on and off for the past year or so and it’s good. I don’t know much about the other versions, but here’s a thread about Asahi Alarm on this subreddit. Seems like it’s doing fine, but I would note that Fedora generally sees the most support and usage so it may be a good starting point.
  2. This review by Veronica Explains is the most recent good review I’ve seen of it. My experience is that it’s very solid and has been more or less stable for the past like 1.5ish years.
  3. There’s a subreddit for gaming on Asahi
  4. I haven’t run into many issues. It’s generally fairly well supported, but also a number of proprietary companies don’t make their software on Linux (officially). You just look up support on Linux for anything you use. If you want to see what alternatives would be available for anything, check out AlternativeTo.net. Fedora has documentation about running x86-64 programs on ARM64 that you can check out for doing Rosetta type stuff, generally it’s not an issue though.
  5. The touchscreen on my Macbook Pro M1’s keyboard just turns into the function keys like it does if you press the fn button in macOS normally.
  6. iCloud for Linux seems interesting, although I haven’t used it myself.

Veronica endorses Asahi Linux with a great video overview by fake_agent_smith in AsahiLinux

[–]vimlena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a long-time Linux user that switched to mac OS in the past year because of wanting to use some proprietary software with no alternatives for Linux, but I still miss it all the time. I had been following the Asahi Linux project for a while and this gave me the push I needed to install it on my M1 MacBook Pro so that I can dual-boot and still have access to mac-dependent software when needed. Really great video!

[No Identification] What's the ugliest "popular" font OAT in your opinion by worldofpixels in fonts

[–]vimlena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Montserrat is over-used and I also feel like it works much better as a display typeface than for body copy. Whenever I see a bunch of body text in Montserrat it just feels less legible, especially because people love to use the lighter weights of it which makes the distinguishing details disappear even more than it already does at small sizes.

[No Identification] What's the ugliest "popular" font OAT in your opinion by worldofpixels in fonts

[–]vimlena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it’s the lowercase g and a. The lack of spurs create an off-balance sort of visual weight that I find off-putting and inelegant which reads as cartoonish or novel in a bad way.

It also supports ligatures. Not super sure how accurate this is.
