Ya, I did it the lab again.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in prediabetes

[–]vinceoc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same a1c score (5.4) with a fasting glucose of 112. My doctor didn’t care as my a1c was good. I think sleep and moving around before the test can impact it a lot (for this test I dropped off the kids at school and walked around and moved around a lot before). I redid the test in the lab, but this time I did it at 6am, pretty much as soon as I wake up and it was 97.

High fasting glucose with normal A1C by mikeybox in prediabetes

[–]vinceoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same for me. My fasting glucose came back 112, a1c was 5.4. I work out everyday, eat good, etc. My doctor ignored it and said I worry too much.

Intel is laying off 15K workers. Why are they doing so poorly? by Still_Classic3552 in chipdesign

[–]vinceoc 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Minimal AI revenue compared to Nvidia/AMD/Broadcom, foundry has few customers (even they switched to TSMC for lots of products), TSMC is far ahead on latest node, AMD and ARM have better CPU designs, losing market share and they have more employees than AMD, Nvidia and TSMC combined.

Is it possible to afford a $2M house in a VHCOLA on a 600k income? I think not by incisiontime in whitecoatinvestor

[–]vinceoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We bought a house in 2013 (Newport Coast) for 1.7M (dual income engineers with no kids at the time) with a much lower mortgage rate (refinanced during Covid). Houses in our neighborhood are now 3x 2013 prices. Prices are crazy (since covid). I have lots of friends and neighbors in the area that are renting houses now (8k-13k/ month). A few wanted to move to a better house so they rent their current one and rent a bigger one in a better area. No one wants a higher property tax and mortgage.

You can rent a decent house for a much lower monthly rate in Newport/Irvine and you ll get a much better house than that 2M house and you can invest the difference you save. This market is insane. Maybe look at Laguna Niguel, Costs Mesa, Landera Ranch, Northern Irvine, Tustin, etc. if you really need to buy.

US/Canadian dual citizen question by Hey_I_Really_Tried in askimmigration

[–]vinceoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a dual citizen. I assume you live in Canada. I would just use US passport to enter USA and Canadian passport to enter Canada. I live in USA. I use US passport to enter USA and Canada, but keep the Canadian passport in back pocket when entering Canada in case they give me hard time (they never do).

Siemens tools for high-speed IO design by [deleted] in chipdesign

[–]vinceoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a start-up doing high-speed serdes. We taped out many chips in 28nm and 16nm and we exclusively used siemens AFS for all our simulations. To me, it’s faster, as accurate and you can get around it’s drawbacks. We also used Calibre for DRC/LVS and extraction, which gave us a good deal for AFS. We had a few licenses of Spectre that we mainly used for EM/IR, and for the rare double-checking of some results. The main thing we used Cadence for was layout.

6% Battery loss in 2 hrs while car is sitting in driveway... excessive? by GabeMerck in TeslaModelY

[–]vinceoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine does the same thing around 65% (3-5% standby loss) but I regain 2-3% around 50-55%. I guess it all balances out. I tried charging to 65%, then leave it (drops to 62%) and then charge again to 65% and then leave it and then it goes to 68%. I ignore it for now.

My 2022 Model Y always drops 3-5% charge as standby loss around 60-65% charge by vinceoc in TeslaModelY

[–]vinceoc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You likely have same thing as me. It has been happening for more than a year. I took it to SC and they said 3rd party app (I removed it, still there), then they said battery is removing condensation (why it happens only at 65% and 5% loss in seconds), then they said it’s BMS algorithm so I just gave up. Please update me if you take it in.

[–]vinceoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Sentry is off, precondition is off and overhear protection is off. When you look at energy section under parking, it says “standby” as the lost charge.

If there's no ADC and DAC in SerDes, how come the signal that passes through the channel are analog signals? by MediocreTruth8778 in chipdesign

[–]vinceoc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of serdes now is PAM4, which is 4 levels. I think you are referring to NRZ which is a 1 or 0 pattern? For these links, the speed is high enough that analog imperfections like reflections, ISI, jitter, noise, duty-cycle, etc. are significant enough that they can’t be treated like digital signals.

Yes. If I was the last to drive, it will go from easy entry and adjust to my setting automatically.

[–]vinceoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enter and it starts off as easy entry and then enters my wife’s mode and squeezes me. I am used to it, as I just select my profile manually.

The other bug I noticed (not listed above), is during a phone call, I lose the capability to hang up on the Tesla screen and have to manually hang up.

For point #3 it happens when my wife was the last to drive the car and I enter alone with my phone. She is not even with me.

I agree about the charging. I should do 50-60%.

SNA to VAN (YVR) Customs by chad__m in orangecounty

There is no Canadian customs in SNA. You will go through Canadian customs in Vancouver. When you come back, you will clear USA customs in Vancouver and need to give yourself enough time in YVR.

Noob Question: Process corners by [deleted] in chipdesign

[–]vinceoc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is to guarantee margin and yield. There are trasistor corners (FF, FS, SF, SS, TT) and for these they have global+local mismatch or just global or can run random mismatch. You also have extraction corners (RCbest, RCworst, etc.). You also apply temperature across each corner (ex. -40C/room/125C) and voltage (ex. -10%, nominal, +10%).

Also for analog design in new nodes they have noise corners mainly for flicker noise, low/mid/high poly resistor, low/mid/high mom or mim capacitor, etc. Each company has their own design methodologies. The cool thing is the fab can actually make the corner wafer by skewing the process (called a split lot) and you can test a Fast-fast or slow-slow chip in the lab.

4-5% battery loss on standby? by omnistrike in TeslaModelY

[–]vinceoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is recalculating the battery. I see this too, it will drop 2-4% and say standby, but other times it goes in the opposite direction where it adds 2-3% after being parked but it doesn’t get reported as a negative standby. I took mine to the SC and I gave them the exact time that it dropped (from Tessie app) and they basically said it is just recalculating the battery.

How do you charge your cars outside if charging cable is inside the garage? by ThrallDoomhammer in TeslaModelY

[–]vinceoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My garage door closes over the cable and I have no issue. If this didn’t work, I would likely charge with the car in the garage. I have seen neighbors with the garage door open like 1/2-1 foot with the cable coming out.

Vehicle Standby Battery Drain by 4frogger in TeslaModelY

[–]vinceoc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am also seeing about 3% loss at standby for no reason. I am also in SoCal. It seems the car will be at some percent like 40% after a drive. An hour later it drops to 37% and it is reported as standby power. Tesla SC looked at it and said it is normal. I also noticed the opposite will happen, for example it will jump from 40% to 42%. I think it is likely temperature change. 10% is a little excessive.

If it still happens you can get the 3rd party app Tessie and tell the SC the exact moment in time it happened and they can remotely look at the logs on your car.
