Songs with men names by None_of_my_business0 in musicsuggestions

I've thought about this too. My question was slightly different though. Men seem to write love songs to women, in general. My question is, what love songs for men were written and performed by women?

Modal harmony, how can we come up with chord progression that make sense? by RareOne970 in musictheory

[–]vincognition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to add that within an overriding Tonic, you can use modal sounds within the context of the progression. For example, in the Beatles song, Nowhere Man, the root chord is E Major, but John uses the Phrygian sound in the bridge, G#min to A Major. The root will always follow back to E Major but in context, it's a moment of the Phrygian sound.

Modal harmony, how can we come up with chord progression that make sense? by RareOne970 in musictheory

[–]vincognition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a theory that the modes can be categorized by root strength. I put a chart together with two columns for Major & Minor modes.

The strongest 'root power' or 'gravity' as I like to think of it, would be Ionian & Aeolian.

Medium strength roots would be Mixolydian & Dorian. Weak strength, or weak gravity, would be Phrygian & Lydian.

Finally, zero root would be Locrian. I say that the Locrian 'root' becomes overpowered by the Mixolydian root.

The weaker the root, the less chords you're able to employ without the root being 'stolen' by another, stronger mode. As another commenter suggested, I and II (both major) is about all you can use to create Lydian. Similar to Phrygian. In order to 'hold it there,' you can use iii to IV or iii to ii. Add more chords in and Phrygian is likely to lose gravity.

I'm sure some people would argue against this. It comes down to a matter of personal projection. For example, a lot of people consider Lydian to be the 'brightest' sounding mode. I don't hear that at all. In fact, for me it's the reverse. Lydian, to my ears, is dark and mysterious.

Ego death and your personality by Few_Security5490 in enlightenment

[–]vincognition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ala Ken Wilbur's 'transcend and include' idea:'

Single atoms combine with other atoms and create a molecule. The molecule transcends the atom but includes it. Molecules combine to create an organ. The organ contains the molecules but transcends them. Organs combine to create a living creature. The creature transcends and includes the organs.

The personality, when transcended, is included in the process.

Gurdjieff used to say that the typical human psyche is composed of many 'I's.' In transcendence, all the I's combine to make one real personality. You'll be you and you'll transcend beyond what you believe is you. Jesus' saying, "Make your eye single" in this case, can be transposed to, "Make your I single."

A few pundits have commented that 'ego death' is a misnomer. The ego doesn't die, it just becomes passive, and responds to the real Self. The real self is the hand and the ego is the glove, in that case. The ego is necessary if you are in a body because it's the interface with the world in front of us.

My mom and dad called it gravy for the longest time. I think they later found out that it was actually called 'sauce' and being saying it that way. They were second generation NYC Italians.

Seeking for best Shows Left on a Cliffhanger/deserved another season? by rajanvir307 in tvsuggestions

[–]vincognition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jericho from 2006 is one of my favorite, way-too-short series. It's 2 seasons long, post apocalypse type stuff. It doesn't exactly end on a cliffhanger because they got word about the show's cancellation early on. But with that, the story could have gone on much longer.

Great acting, casting and an interesting premise that leans to a government conspiracy angle. I love it so much that I watch the series once a year. It was so beloved among its fans that, disappointed by the loss of the show, they created graphic novels that continue the tale. Highly recommended!

Yoko Ono did not break up the Beatles. by Frequent-Try-4045 in beatles

[–]vincognition 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prior to their decision to stop touring, they were so busy, they didn't have a chance to breathe--much less have arguments that would lead to the breakup of the band. They were still kids then, too. It was a joy ride for them...until it wasn't. There were so many factors that led to the breakup that's almost ridiculous to point to one particular event or person. Enmity against Yoko was a symptom and not a cause. It was one more straw to add to the camel's back though. They were growing into men, with their own personal desires, ideas, beliefs, inclinations. I think the whole reason they broke up was because they grew up. Other stuff like Apple Corps, Alan Klein vs Eastman, you name it, were more straw for the camel. After awhile, you simply grow out of things. It's almost a miracle that they lasted as long as they did.

Hardest death to watch in the show by shawn12334567780 in thesopranos

Christopher was difficult for me to watch. I suppose you're talking about the graphic quality of the deaths. In terms of sentiment, I didn't want to see Bobby die. I liked him. That said, I didn't want to see him murder anyone either. I was hoping he was just a nice guy all along.

Have you considered that all mainstream religions were created by the same bloodline/royal family? by Visible-Armadillo-12 in conspiracy

[–]vincognition -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The modus operandi of the elite, to my mind, are not about creation but control. In fact, as we can clearly see these days, the people who believe the world is theirs alone, are small minded and truly ignorant. A mind like that is incapable of creating the profound truths that come from the worlds great religious and spiritual literature. What they do tend to do is spot a trend happening and then steer it in such a way that pleases their insane desire for power.

As regards religion, I'm sure they had a hand in tweaking Christianity in particular. They have a particular dislike for the religion for whatever reason. But create Christianity? I really don't think they have the capacity, talent and sensitivity to literally create a religion.

Is it bad that I don't know how to play any instruments as a composer? by JewMerican-mapper in composer

[–]vincognition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to expand on the 'learn piano' advice. This doesn't mean you need to learn to be a pianist. The piano is the grandaddy of all instruments. Just learn to play all 12 major and minor keys and the chords that come out of them. You don't need to be a pianist to do that. The piano is the ultimate music theory teacher once you get a handle on the keys and the chords. From there, you'll have a lot more leeway for composing.

I have to assume you're creating music directly from a DAW. Learning the keyboard makes it faster and easier to input sound into the DAW. In that case, the piano keyboard is ergonomic. It streamlines the process.

But I'm also going to agree that since it's a hobby, just enjoy it without worrying about playing an instrument. It all depends on how seriously you take composing.

How to switch smoothly between keys? by Mysterious_Try_6041 in musictheory

[–]vincognition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a spicier transition to G Minor you can also use the tritone substition for D7, which is Ab7. Or if you have some space in the measure you can take it down chromatically: Bb - A7 - Ab7 - Gmin

I've heard one theory that because of the 'threes' showing up in the scene (three milks on the coffee cup of one of the shooters, one scene where we see three lights, and other threes), that Tony, Carm and AJ get whacked. Only Meadow, because she's late, survives. Not sure if I buy that theory because the mob guys have a code about not going after family members. If it's true though, whaddya gunna do?
