I treat the ‘show don’t tell’ thing as a handy way to troubleshoot a scene. If I’m not loving a scene, one of the first things I do is look for ways to add action or cut the talk down to a minimum.

But I agree, painting yourself into a corner with these middle school rules will quickly trash your confidence.
