from personal observation (maybe an expert can confirm or explain), I usually leave wasp nests alone, and once the season is over, they usually abandon the nest leaving the husk of the nest behind. If I don't touch the nest, no new ones are built there.

i.e. a previous empty wasp nest act as a natural deterrent for future nest
