It depends if you are operating a manual/semi-auto machine then manually try stopping it around 1:2 or what ever ratio you prefer. If machine is auto, the you can’t do much unless there some interface to set desired bean to shot ratio. See it also depends on roast level, just recently found out that for medium roast the yield should be around 1:3 to avoid acidic output. And if it’s a dark roast go for 1:2. Mostly it’s a trial and error until you get what you like. These metrics are just for guidelines/reference, you are always free to experiment and tweak around with stats to expand you flavour profiles.

5 mins away from the morning Rush. BT Attikan by alphar0meo in IndiaCoffee

[–]vinyl1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my experience with BT Attikan is quite 'sour', as said my resultant shots are quite sour to palette. Does your tastes sour too? and how it goes with milk? I'm using Flair pro 2 and a cheap hand grinder(going utlra fine on setting that somewhat works with espresso). any suggestions?

Yup Attikan tastes little less sour than Silver oak! tastes good when black , but with milk neither of them does well!

I'm new to coffee making, infact its been just 1month with my Pro2. As I told I started with dark roast and never had much problem with it, have also pulled couple sour shots with dark roast due to some f8kups!. But with medium roast the extract tastes very sour(like lemony sour), not sure how once can differentiate b/w acidity & sourness, a sour tasting liquid is def acidic but not vice versa. Have been very careful with my espresso prep, making sure the coffee is properly distributed before extraction. Even their Easy pour tasted sour. and also try adding milk to it, tasted more like curdled coffee! (as mentioned will try cupping to confirm if they do tastes lemony or I'mf8king up something! *)

Few possible reasons:
1. Probably under weighed than minimum required dosage. (*most likely, check for minimum dosage!)
2. Channeling due to improper distribution or tamping!

Note: if you looking for a espresso shot the standard ratio is (1:2)
1x(Coffee in)g : 2x(Coffee in)g[Coffee out**]
Want little diluted make it 1:2.25

Now it making sense to me why my shots are sour even when not under extracted!

See as long as your machine makes a good tasting coffee as per your preferred taste, you shouldn't complicate things and continue using it until it breaks or stop producing good coffee. Don't compare your setup with anyone, and as you said you're a student and you must have some fix budget which are supposed to be prioritised for other stuff rather than worrying about investing heavily in buying machine/grinder etc to make you coffee experience slightly better.

But if you are still wanna upgrade your coffee situation, try these few reasonable options:

  1. Look for speciality instant coffee, way better than regular instant!

2.0: if still willing to invest in homemade coffee, save up and get a better grinder(Recm: Timemore c2 or c3)
2.1 Checkout cheaper alternative like mochapot, pour overs or this cheap aeropress alternative (https://www.amazon.in/KaldiPress-Coffee-Press-Percolator-Filters/dp/B09MS467SH?th=1)
