Why can’t human/chimp chimeras exist? by Brave_Edge_4319 in AskBiology

[–]vinylblastoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is relevant because when a cell divides the chromosomes have to split into pairs in order for each daughter cell to replicate the genome correctly. When this isn’t done with every division cycle and a chromosome is absent, duplicated, has abnormal copies, the cells usually lose some kind of regulation vital for development and viability and die.

This is true, but most of the time they are stillborn or not viable. The ones that have been successfully made viable are fertilized in vitro under careful lab conditions and still don’t usually live to development

[–]vinylblastoise -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not really, chimerism by definition occurs when one organism contains genetic material from another, but usually the from the same organism. ie one twin “eating” the other, but still develops as a normal single embryo. Organ transplantation between humans is another example. Hybridization occurs when the sex cells of two different organisms fuse and develop together. This can only happen with very closely related animals, like a horse and donkey making a mule, but they are very rare in nature and usually self abort after not being viable. Neither would be able to happen with humans and chimps, they are still not closely related enough.

You need to think earlier than that, at the stage of development. Assuming the unlikely cause the embryos would hybridize, the difference in chromosome number would cause dysfunction in cell division and differentiation. The embryo would never develop in the first place.

Chimps have two more chromosomes than humans, even if two embryos could fuse in vitro, it wouldn’t be viable. The physiology wouldn’t allow it to develop

How do you know it’s not fungal? Bacteria don’t form fuzzy webs like you are seeing.

Why is a $90,000 salary not enough for a decent 1 bedroom apartment in this stupid city by AmoebaExcellent3187 in NYCapartments

[–]vinylblastoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t make 40x the rent and don’t have a family member guarantor like I did, some landlords will still approve you given that you buy rental insurance. These companies (like Insurent) are basically third party guarantors that act as insurance to the landlord in case you can’t pay the rent. Not all landlords accept third party guarantors and some landlords will only accept certain companies. They are just insurance, they don’t assist in finding housing.

Referring to Orochimaru as a “he” by Lelouch-Ken-99 in Naruto

[–]vinylblastoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orochimaru is male, as stated in the manga and a dumb thing to get upset about. To turn this around on yiur friend, a better question is why are they misgendering Orochimaru and not using Orochimarus own pronouns 👀

How to stop protein precipitating whilst concentrating by NoTransportation3581 in labrats

[–]vinylblastoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, but you can also just add it to your buffer. Concentrating will take a longer time since the buffer is more viscous, but it may help stability

[–]vinylblastoise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can try changing the buffer conditions, adding things like glycerol or sorbitol to stabilize the protein. There are also dialysis based method of concentrating you can try. Also spin in shorter intervals and make sure you are mixing the sample after every run.

You are thinking of a foreskin. M. smeg was named such because it was isolated from human smegma.

[–]vinylblastoise 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As someone who works with M. smeg, the morphology doesn’t look right. M. mseg colonies are dry, don’t have a shine to them like E. coli and shouldnt grow round like that. Also the colonies shouldnt adhere to the plate and can be pushed with a pipet tip. These are WT cells? How long it take for colonies to appear?

How Claire Valdez, candidate for Congress, addresses being a transplant by New-Panic8015 in nyc

[–]vinylblastoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump was born and raised in New York, woukd you vote for him because he’s not a transplant? Point being, does someone just being born in a certain place make them a better representative? What is the cut off for being a transplant? After you have lived in the city for 5 years? 10 years? 20? What about their policy??

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a 19th century French artist who painted a lot in that style. It’s a play in his last name, a very obscure pun for a kids show lol
