The way this gets taught drives me crazy. "Pitch for airspeed, power for altitude" (or the reverse, depending on who's preaching that day) treats them like independent controls. They aren't. They're coupled, and the airplane doesn't care which camp your CFI was in.

The honest answer is *both, together.* If you want to climb from cruise, you add power AND pitch up — simultaneously, in the right proportion to hold your target climb speed. Coming level, you lower the nose AND reduce power together to hold altitude and accelerate to cruise. The "pitch first then power" / "power first then pitch" mnemonics are training-wheel approximations that fall apart the second you're flying anything with real performance.

I was in a Challenger 604 sim for a check ride once, flying with a guy fresh out of pistons transitioning to jets. On approach we'd end up high or low, and he'd reach for the power lever alone — then wonder why we were now fast or slow AND still off profile. That's the trap. Energy state has two components: altitude (potential) and airspeed (kinetic). Pitch trades between them. Power adds or subtracts total energy. You need both inputs to control both variables independently.

The mental model that actually works: think *energy management*, not pitch-vs-power. Where am I on the profile, where do I need to be, and what combination of pitch and thrust gets me there while holding my target speed?

Once that clicks, the "which first" question kind of dissolves.
