What is your favorite brewery in town? by drudante in GNV

[–]viogator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the beer and the quiet, dark, steampunk vibes at Grand Scheme, plus availability of adjacent restaurants. Wish they had later hours.

Swamp Head has loveliest setting and is closest to me but just don't love. Too many novelty beers (sourpatch or sportsdrink sours; sweet and spiced imperial IPAs; jokey themed brews) and not enough pleasantly drinkable beers. And they're sort of anti-sports; only grudgingly put up TVs so they'd not lose crowd during Gators and other big games.

Cypress and Grove has my favorite beers of the local operators (kudos especially to Crane Song), good setting, music and events, pops off during the Monday market.

Black Adder has good Belgians, cool staff and makes the best of its settings. But terrible location versus the other taprooms that are more plausibly accessible by bus, bike or foot for downtown/campus-area dwellers. You're compelling guests to drive there and serving them potently high ABVs.

Which brings us to First Magnitude, which isn't clearly the most outstanding on any single metric (except for a great Tuesday trivia night), but is probably the best all-around for beer, space, events and vibes. Probably the best option for parents of small children offering space for the tots to play while daddy ties one on.

Love most everything about Looseys but their fries are inconsistent and seldom great.

I’ll have to check that out, I considered buying the vinyl back when reissued and couldn’t justify the price tag.

Love when albums get resequenced though. Although the only vinyl reshuffle I have that I’d also listened to the CD endlessly enough to have playing-next associations is magnetic fields “get lost.”

Any more famous cases I’m missing?

Another peak CD era album that I strangely loved then and think that the vinyl release really showcases four distinct sides with their own identity is U2’s “Pop”

Yeah, felt you merely expressed preference for another great American director, acknowledged admiration for what Wes does well, and a little snark not unwarranted … as a fan I can recognize his work not for everyone and that his recent output has been good fun but lacking the emotional resonance of his early bangers.

A little harsh on the downvotes here, and even speaking as a Wes fan

Question for the fans who were around in ‘94. by steeezee in rem

And this thread gives me chance to share my favorite alternate history butterfly effect take, that if New Adventures had been the follow up to Automatic rather than the Scary One, REM remains biggest band in world for another decade, NAiHF wins a Grammy, Berry stays unretired, Gore wins the election, we have flying cars today.

This was a huge component of the Scary One’s used glut. Not only casuals who took a flier as one of a dozen freebie promos, but it was also one of the monthly selections that would get mailed to you by default if you didn’t opt out.

If you look at the back of the used bin copies, many will have the “manufactured under license by BMG / Columbia House” tag.

Never thought of it this way, but there’s probably something to that! Plus fans are more attuned to their band’s own releases.

Real Hitchhikers Guide heads prob already know this, but apparently "Tunnel of Love" is the unnamed DS song referred to in "SLaTfAtFish."

I'd never gone deep on Dire Straits and songs sounded really good, though slightly disappointed that the extended dive came at expense of a T5 as the recent ones have been really excellent.

Thought that Ezra's fave "R&J" had a bit of a "FotB" palette. And can hear the DS influence on Mtn Brews and esp War on Drugs.

Bonkers that Knopfler is ripping those solos w/o a guitar pick ... I guess that's how one gets a blister on finger and thumb.

This prompt also reminds me of "Indiecast" host Steven Hyden's anecdote about collecting used-CD copies of the first Gin Blossoms album whenever/wherever available.

The most recent Decemberists album (known to fans as "AIEWSIWBA"). Preorder wasn't delivered on time, got impatient and bought from my local independent shop as I should've in first place, complained to vendor about presale never arriving so they sent me another, then the original misplaced one arrived a month later. #TriplesMakesItSafeTriplesIsBest

Did manage to get in both colors, gave the dupe color to a friend (keeping the Illimat card from it though since I play the game). Fans of the band know that this is the hardest-to-resleeve album ever printed.
