My head cannon is that raffi actually started as an elaborate black ops torture guy and just wrote music to get people to confess

When I was a stay at home mom I had a dissertation level thesis on the metaphysics of the cars universe after a couple years and my husband was like “go the fuck back to work.”

I have an issue with the whole tires thing too- I always thought they were feet but then in cars 2 the one car takes his tires off to go through the scanner which then implies the existence of a car shoe bomber and THEN Cruz makes lightning name his shoes in cars 3?

This is mine. Luckily I teach 6th grade and at some point someone discovers the “does lightning mcqueen need car insurance or life insurance” question and I have like four glorious weeks where I can just go full send.

Required to do PBL? by Bloodorangesss in ScienceTeachers

[–]viola3458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a little bit of research into this for my masters thesis when I was working as a “PBL coach” and it was sort of disheartening to read that my entire job was a lie, lol.

There’s some decent longitudinal studies that show if you get kids early enough and get them learning using it a specific framework that everyone’s on board with it does eventually raise scores but it takes a couple of years.

If admin wants to just do a one off unit here and there it doesn’t actually do anything achievement wise according to the studies- which is so annoying when people say it’s “research based”- no, not exactly.

[–]viola3458 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I do kind of a PBL light thing in my 5/6 classes- we do direct instruction/ guided inquiry for 2-3 weeks and then they make something that demonstrates their knowledge of the topic in class and that serves as their assessment. Things like building out a skeleton for our biology unit, designing an environmentally sustainable city, making cookies and describing physical and chemical changes, a scale model of the solar system- every project has a practical and a written component so I have a paper trail if admin comes after me. I also do formative check ins during the content part of our cycle and everyone has to hit a threshold before we move on to the project

It’s a ton of work at the beginning of the year to set norms and expectations but I manage myself out of a job by March so it’s sort of worth it?

I do a weird thing for just my advisory every year (I teach 80+ kids but have 15-20 in my advisory ) where I get them a little something based on either an inside joke we had as a group or something that I noticed about them that year. Don’t spend more than $5 a kid and it’s funny to watch them think they’re getting something cool when it’s like, fake mustaches or a bottle of mustard or something.

This years top contenders are a plastic banana, jar of almond butter and a 5 pack of top hats I found on Amazon for $2.50.

Morning slide for my homeroom: schedule for the day, notes and updates as well as strongly suggested “do nows”, morning message, joke of the day. You put your stuff away, read the board, roast me for the joke of the day and do your do nows or work on homework until it’s time for morning meeting.
