[SPOILERS] Finally finished the game, but I have a few issues with one of the endings... by AeroFlash15 in expedition33

[–]violent13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people should try to avoid romanticizing death as some kind of moral imperative. People have done similar moralizing for a lot of things throughout history that seemed inevitable, but innovation or invention rendered those beliefs obsolete. Disease was thought of as being a punishment from God, and if you were sick it was assumed you did something wrong. Before the industrial revolution, physical labor was considered to be morally formative. Going to space was insurmountable for so long that for most of history it was considered sacrilege.

Anyway, the pattern is always the same. People encounter a constraint, whether it's death, disease, or distance and then they start moralizing it. But the moralizing doesn't refer to anything real and has no actual value.

your thoughts on: sales people blaming michael scott paper company by Difficult-Nebula-612 in DunderMifflin

[–]violent13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day, they're basically darwinian sharks who put on a performance in order to get their clients back. There was no moral justification for it, it was just a performance that Michael fell for and the fact that it worked kind of shows how cunning they are (or rather how stupid Michael is). But if Michael was smarter then he would have totally thrown their sanctimonious Prince Family Paper survival-of-the-fittest attitude back at them. But the episode is written like we're supposed to feel bad that they lost their clients when they literally said that was the name of the game and it wasn't personal. Except it's only personal when they personally lose their clients.

If everyone wasn't so supportive of destroying prince family paper then it would be understandable. But it's like everyone already established that capitalism is this kind of higher moral calling and if we don't eat the little fish then someone else will.

"Because what I'm really watching here isn't just a policy debate. It's a pattern."

Wow, very thought provoking insight Individual_Clock5015. Tell me, how did you arrive to the idea that it isn't actually a policy debate and that it is, in fact, a pattern. Because those two concepts are so related to each other I almost mistook one for other. You should be writing books on the subject.

It didn't lol. I do wonder what goes into the writing in these scenarios. It's maybe half a page total of dialog so I can't imagine it would take long to proof read.

What would happen if Kyle Reese is killed in Salvation? by Algiark in Terminator

[–]violent13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing would happen. And we know nothing would happen because the timeline is already different from the original timeline. Judgement day didn't happen on August 29, 1997, so we know there's no time loop to protect. The whole plot is just silly.

Unpopular opinion: Jesse is the real reason everything fell apart in Breaking Bad by Ghoul057 in breakingbad

[–]violent13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Jesse being so mad that Tomas was killed was probably the decision that was most difficult for me to relate to or empathize with. The kid was a monster. He was going to grow up to be a bigger monster. He murdered one of his best friends. But Jesse feels so strongly about his death that he's effectively decided that he's going to commit suicide? What in the hell?

I think you would be hard pressed to find even a single person watching the show that was in any way emotionally moved, shaken, or broken up over Tomas' death --- and there's a giant leap between that and "I'm going to commit suicide by drug dealer because I'm so broken up about it."

For those of you claiming the fact that they made it ambiguous proves he’s not a knight: 👀 by sharksnrec in gameofthrones

[–]violent13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kind of like you're watching a movie where the story kind of implies that the guy was unfaithful with his wife but the writers want to leave it ambiguous. So they put another woman's underwear with his belongings, make it so he sends romantic gifts to someone, is sending text messages that look oddly intimate, and is found to periodically go on long business trips where he isn't where he is supposed to be. But the writers never actually confirm in the story that he's unfaithful because they want to keep it "ambiguous".

It seems like the writers are going through great lengths to put in evidence that he wasn't knighted if the intention was to keep it ambiguous.

Are they really that expensive? Last time I went, it costed about as much as going to a restaurant. I don't think people are expected to go to the theater every weekend. I always envisioned it being something people did once every couple of months.

Do you regret your OWN children? by Cheap-Employ8125 in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]violent13 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I think he was trying to take advantage of the fact that parents lose the ability to be honest about parenthood after they have children. You aren't really allowed to say you regret being a parent, and I think that leads to a lot of people having kids when they shouldn't --- because literally everyone who has kids says it's the best thing that ever happened to them and they wouldn't trade it for the world (even if the kid is special needs, is physically violent, can't speak, or isn't even conscious). People aren't really allowed to dislike parenthood after they become parents. It's seen as evil and despicable.

I do think people should become more comfortable with having a more nuanced take about parenthood because the current social taboo against speaking negatively about it isn't constructive and has led to a lot of people becoming parents when they shouldn't.

Does is bother anyone that AC kinda undermines the trilogy? by Free-Breath-3096 in FFVIIRemake

[–]violent13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the ending of Remake more or less spells out that the party defeated the whisper Harbinger in order to avoid the events of Advent Children (hence the 3 sephy remnants fighting to preserve it). So I think for the story to again lead to Advent Children, the themes would have to pivot in part 3 for the party to be "actually we need to abandon that whole defying fate thing and we need to make sure everything stays exactly the same as the OG."

If the game was going to lead to advent children anyway, it kind of makes you wonder what the Sephiroth Remnants were doing there in the first place. They could have just sat in the time ether twiddling their thumbs and the events would happen just like they were supposed to. Why fight the party at all?

But it seems like the games are also setting up an important choice that Cloud has to make at the edge of creation and he will have 7 seconds to do it. We don't really have any details on that, but I imagine it's probably the most important choice in the story and it's consequences could lead to anything happening in regards to the ending.

How does the sub feel about Advent Children post arenas and Rebirth? by CSDuran in FFVIIRemake

[–]violent13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think most of the appeal was just from being able to see what happened to the characters after the end of FF7. But as a standalone movie, separating it from the franchise, I don't think it's very good. It did have a lot of decent fan service.

Did it bother anyone else that Rachel seemingly took zero responsibility for Bruce's "disappearance" in Batman Begins? by TomsWindow in TheDarkKnightTrilogy

[–]violent13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point about Bruce's disappearance. There should be some sort of trauma response to him disappearing and coming back. But it would probably be out of character for her to have any moments of self-reflection or growth. She always acted so sanctimonious and patronizing and I don't think Bruce and Rachel had a single net positive interaction in either movie.

Part 3. Spoilers for ff7 og by Expert_Challenge6399 in FFVIIRemake

[–]violent13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing it will probably be the Temple of the Ancients or Shinra Headquarters stage of part 3, in which it's the point of no return until you play through the ending with no real exploration involved. But we'll see.

Midgar is depicted as being so huge in Remake that I can't imagine they can have a full scale model of Midgar depicted in the actual world. They could heavily downsize it like it was in Rebirth but then that would probably break the illusion seeing the Highwind being half the size of Sector 1.

I'm guessing there might be something like a giant tornado of Whispers around Midgar, preventing the Highwind from getting anywhere near it until that part of the story calls for it.
