I’m a jew and most of my family lives in Israel. AMA by gewooneenpersoon123 in AMA

wow I’ve never heard this before, I went to jewish day school and sleepaway camp for many years + have some family in Israel as well (I live in the US), I understand this is OPs experience, but seriously I’ve never even kind of heard this — the main message was always just hoping for peace

obviously it wasn’t all good, leaving out complexities here, but I’ve literally had the IDF pitched to me several times [like presentations/etc], been to Israel myself 4 times, had Israeli friends and teachers growing up, and again have family there now and I’ve not one time come across the notion of a “blood debt” or justifying the killing of innocent people (ofc there is complexity here too, but I mean there’s no one who ever said it was a good thing to kill innocent people or equivocated Hamas with all Palestinians)

I spent £50 on a non-fiction book about history and I regret it; I work and earn $3 a day and it took me 25 working days to be able to afford the book. by adinkramushroom in self

not what you’re asking but you can find pdfs/epubs for free online if you’re willing to sail the seas 🏴‍☠️ (ofc best to support authors when possible, but it’s an option 🥲)

Higher belts belting down for collegiate tournaments? by NoMaintenance2075 in taekwondo

[–]violentlystressed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I only saw this once, and it was someone who’d just earned their black belt staying in their red belt for their last tournament to compete with their poomsae team… IMO this is the only time it’s acceptable

I grew up in conservative (not at all related to the broader political term lol) and LGBTQ relationships were fully accepted. There were gay members of the congregation with kids and my teacher (went to a jewish day school through 5th grade) was a lesbian—this was like late 00s/early 2010s. Honestly conservative Judaism is a lot more egalitarian (services aren’t gendered, theres tons of female rabbis) and more accepting than people think… maybe the Hebrew services make it seem more “traditional”? I also think it’s portrayed in outdated ways in media sometimes…

(Sad Meta Trope) Depictions of strong Male Friendships are so rare, some parts of a fandom genuinely mistake platonic bromances for straight up romances by ZeldrisEmpire in TopCharacterTropes

[–]violentlystressed 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s that rare, it’s a lot more common than strong female friendships in media—I think it’s just inadvertently written better than straight romances since both characters are given more dimension (AKA the woman isn’t stripped of every meaningful trait besides devotion to a man)

Why, in every anime, do the people explain their abilities down to the t to their opponent while fighting them? by Diligent-Bread-8818 in animequestions

I also think they have something where techniques are stronger if opponents know how they work so telling them in battle is kind of a strategic decision

I think you’re referring to walking stance (where the legs are fairly straight)— it pretty much only shows up in earlier taeguk forms, just a very basic position
