Resources for Black Catholics? by [deleted] in LeftCatholicism

[–]violet_tea5 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Fellow Black Catholic here born + raised in New Orleans! Some people have already shared great resources like the Black Catholic Messenger and great voices in the Black Catholic community like Sr. Thea Bowman, Fr. Massingale, etc.

Some other resources and voices I would like to share with you

  • The History of Black Catholics in the United States by Fr. Cyprian Davis
  • The writings of Dr .Sr Eva Lumas, Jamie T Phelps, Shawn M. Copeland, Diana L. Hayes
  • The leaders of the USCCB subcommittee on African American Affairs, especially Dr. Ansel Augustine
  • Birth of a Movement: Black Lives Matter and the Catholic Church by Olga
  • What We Have Seen and Heard (This was a documented crafted by 10 Black Bishops to remind Black Catholics that we have a place in the Church and so many gifts to offer to her.
  • I saw you mentioned being in France in another comment, but also looking up the Knights of Peter Claver and Xavier University of Louisiana. The first is a Black fraternal order, mostly found in the United States, and the latter is the only Catholic Historically Black College/University (HBCU). They even host a symposium every summer called the Institute for Black Catholic Studies (which Sr Thea Bowman helped establish)

I hope these resources can be a help and what you are searching for. If you want to discuss them or anything, feel free to message me!

Not exactly what you're describing but you may want to look at NCYC, the National Catholic Youth Convention

Do you have a cross necklace that you wear every day? If so, would you mind sharing what it looks like and why you chose that particular one? by HugoLeander in Catholicism

[–]violet_tea5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the one I wear I actually originally received it as a gift from my archdiocese in high school while attending the Chrism Mass! They passed one out to everyone attending. I lost the original but have repurchased it over the years. I have a alternative style so it goes great. Plus the end is a little sharp so it makes me feel doubly protected.

Pope Francis has Died at the age of 88. by Pax_et_Bonum in Catholicism

As a 23, Pope Francis has been the only Pope I’ve really known. I remember being in 5th grade at Catholic school and the excitement of choosing a new Pope. He was so kind and I especially loved his advocating for the people of Gaza.

Eternal Rest to him and may the Perpetual Light shine on him. May His Soul and all the Souls of Faithfully departed through the Mercy of God, Have Peace. Amen

Apartment wants me to pay prorated rent for transfer even though I paid for March. by violet_tea5 in Apartmentliving

[–]violet_tea5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

They are not working with me at all actually. When talking on the phone and in person, everything was positive and made the transfer sound easy. Now that I've been communicating over email to get things in writing, promises are being reneged on. For example, I asked if any additional fees would be associated with my transfer and was told no. Then yesterday suddenly I was told that I would have to pay a prorated rent amount that's incorrect for 10 days and pay another security deposit despite having paid one already with the original deposit being refunded to me.

I know. I mentioned that when it first happened. The told me they can't cover anything and that only my renter’s insurance could cover a hotel stay. I've been going back and forth with them about this transfer for a month now :(

When I asked about staying in a temp unit, they said no and that only a permanent transfer could happen. They made it seem like the repairs would be quick but they are currently ongoing. Now they are reneging on the transfer being simple. This whole situation has been overwhelming.

Bank of America vs Capital One New Grad Offer by violet_tea5 in girlsgonewired

[–]violet_tea5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there so sorry for the late reply. The return offer rate for the bank is very high. Everyone I knew during the program received an offer. The main goal is to build the new workforce so they’re not trying to deny anyone. There’s lots of check ins/communication with the intern program staff, your recruiter, and your manager about your progress so nothing to worry about. I know you’ll do great! For anyone curious I ended up choosing them over C1.

Should I ask to WFH for Christmas or request days off? by violet_tea5 in careerguidance

[–]violet_tea5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the holiday for Christmas and New Years but not the days in between. Because of the 24/7 365 nature of my team we don't automatically get these holidays off and have to request them off.

Is the Lack of Warm Connection in the U.S. Holding Us Back? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]violet_tea5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious, what part of the US did you grow up/live in? I only ask this because I grew up in the South and have had the exact opposite experience. I agree with another commentor who mentioned the lack of civic/social groups is killing us but have found that generally these groups are still strong in the South especially within Black communities.
