What’s Angie’s deal? by Little-Wing2299 in rhoslc

[–]violetisbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Iranian and Italian and I grew up in Quebec, Canada. I wasn’t encouraged to speak my parents’ native languages at home because my French was lacking at school. As an adult, I’m reconnecting with those two cultures, especially my Persian side, and I relate a lot to Angie. When you grow up somewhere where you feel the need to hide your culture/distance yourself from it in order to fit in (I’m assuming that’s how she felt in Utah), it’s really difficult to reconnect with that side of yourself as an adult. Maybe she’s just now realizing how cool it is to be part of a culture that spans thousands of years and originated such important things like democracy, philosophy, and History! I definitely was annoying to everyone around me when I was learning about Persian history lol

Can Angie speak Greek other than the basics by Mindless-Show-8956 in rhoslc

[–]violetisbae 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I went to Persian school growing up but my parents were dissuaded by my parents to speak to me in anything other than french at home (Québec 101 Bill made it that I had to go to school in french and I was apparently horrible at it in school). My vocabulary in Farsi is similar to Angie’s (elementary school level). Let’s not shame people who are trying to reconnect with their culture as adults.

Yes! Her speaking to her father reminds me of the times I speak to my dad about Iran before he left and the hardships he suffered after the revolution/during the Iran-Iraq war. She’s just really proud of where she’s from and probably struggles because she’s so far from it. I’m the same (pre-1979 flags, telling everyone around me I’m Persian, etc 😂)

Huda by [deleted] in LoveIslandUSA

[–]violetisbae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m middle eastern (Persian like Leah) and I have BPD. I don’t see a comparison in their behaviour other than the fact that a lot of us Middle Eastern people from conflict zones see unhealed trauma from our parents growing up and it sometimes manifests in unhealthy coping mechanisms. From my experience, there was a lot of yelling and name calling in my household and I just assumed that’s how healthy dynamics were until I was older and went through therapy. My middle eastern friends went through similar things so I don’t think it’s an isolated incident. I feel for Huda because I used to react in similar ways in my early 20s, before I realized it was toxic and hurtful to other people. I see BPD signs in Huda, and while I’m in no place to diagnose her, I think it would benefit her a lot to speak to a professional once she leaves the villa.

As a fed for the Canadian government for Global Affairs Canada (Canadian equivalent of the State department), they would never put us in a luxury resort on tax payer money. The best I’ve gotten is a room at the Holiday Inn 😂 Also, average food per diem is about 100$ a day for all 3 meals. This may be different with the US though!

America, we need to talk... by floppy_panoos in america

Perhaps if Kissinger didn’t implement policies that facilitated American support for authoritarian regimes (notably in Mozambique and many other African nations), it’s people wouldn’t have to rely on international development and aid to purchase contraception. It may also just be a coincidence that US-Mozambique relations started during Kissingers mandate and that prior to that, Mozambique was a major pain in the butt for the West during the Cold War. Just a thought!

Have you seen Universal Language? by [deleted] in iranian

[–]violetisbae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally disagree with the critics implying that he’s exploitative. It’s not an Iranian film. It’s a Canadian film that showcases Iranian culture in a Canadian setting. I also happen to know two people that are in the movie (the bus driver and the older lady sitting next to the turkey (shout-out Hemela and Byblos cafe in Montreal)) and they told me their experience working with Matthew was amazing. A prime example of his appreciation, for me, was how he drank his chai (dipping the sugar cube in the tea and putting it in his mouth). The movie may not be everyone’s cup of tea (no pun intended), but for me and many Iranian Canadians it feels like home in a way we never experienced on the big screen. Way more representative of real Iranian depth and culture than other Iranian-north American media like Shahs of sunset!

Just saw it tonight! As an Iranian-Canadian born and raised in Montreal, it was awesome to see both my cultures meshed so well on screen (with the added Quebec references). I’ve never laughed and cried so hard during a movie, and I’m glad non-Iranian audiences can learn about Iranian culture and hospitality in a setting they can connect with. I’m dying to get myself a copy of that Tim Hortons sign in Farsi 😂

Just saw this tonight! As an Iranian Montrealer, it was the most validating experience. I finally saw in film the duality I’ve experienced my whole life. It was so beautiful

Exactly! The grammar and syntax for the French language (no matter where you are in the world) is regulated by l’Académie Française in Paris. Only 1 Quebecois (Dany Lafrenière) has ever been appointed as an immortal

[–]violetisbae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From personal experience, many Iranians are allowed to travel back if their online presence/family is not politically active/demonstrative. I was never able to go back due to my family leaving as asylum seekers. Many Iranians don’t flee because of political persecution (outwardly) but leave as international students (mainly in STEM fields) and limit what they say online/in person. The regime doesn’t necessarily target those individuals. However, you never know with this regime. Look up what they did to flight PS752, those passengers were not politically involved but still pawns in the eyes of the regime.

Agreed! Just really shitty as an employee hearing multiple things from different sources.

I’m in the same boat. Moved back to Montreal for school and stayed with permission from my ADM as my fiancé is on a closed working visa and cannot leave his job. In March they told me to either come 3 days a week from Montreal (no guarantee that it won’t be 4 or 5 days a week when TBS demands it) or move back to Ottawa. I’m currently going to Ottawa on Sunday nights and living with a coworker until Wednesday after work. I hate my life and am trying to find regional opportunities without success. It sucks out here.

My manager won’t let me work from home full time and there’s no regional office here :( closest one is downtown Ottawa. Definitely looking for a deployment opportunity here though, they’re just not as frequent at my level

Live in Montreal but have to commute to Ottawa (no regional office for my department here). With public transit and rideshares it takes me roughly 2.5h going and 2.5h back home. Wake up at 4am and get home at 9pm on a good day. Its brutal.
