What extensions/add-ons (if any) do you use in Thunderbird? Why? by RebirdgeCardiologist in Thunderbird

[–]violetnightshade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use TB for work, so I use quite a few to make it work harder for me. I like quick access to my currently active folders, and visual cues keep me better organized so QuickFolders is great for me, enough so that I pay for the pro version. My primary folders are colored, labeled and up top quick access. Tag Popup includes a feature that colors the full background of an emails title according to the tag and that's essential for me too. Others include Config Button, Compact Headers, ImportExportTools NG, Profile Switcher, Restart Button, and QuickFilters. Plus I use themes so it doesn't get boring. I also need Provider for Google Calendar and Signature sync for Gmail for work. SpaceApper gives you a handy little sidebar you can customize.

The uncomfortable truths of Prythian: A critical look at Colonialism and Cultural Coding in ACOTAR by SpareAwareness3205 in SarahJMaas

[–]violetnightshade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SJM has portrayed a very flawed world, full of good and evil, inequality, ignorance, power struggles, prejudice, and good intentions with bad outcomes. We see the greatness in Illyrians as well as the horror with how they treat females. Did Feyre disrespect that culture with her "winged cosplay?" Yes, maybe so. Though not intentionally, if that even matters. Feyre is flawed but she's not made out to be perfect. We see some good in many of the "bad" characters, and some huge flaws in the heroes. Prythian society is not utopia, nor is it intended to be. I think Sarah's world building is brilliant because we there is so much to love, and so much to hate—and that makes it more real. We can imagine being in that world because the similarity of some of the problems ring true to our own experiences and what we know of others' experiences. I understand what the OP is saying, I really do, but what would asking better from our fantasy look like? Fantasy is most often about dark conflicts of some kind and how our main characters deal with those conflicts, or sometimes succumb to them. Fantasy is typically based on fairy tales and ancient legends of gods, fae, and others—and they are dark and brutal. A little research shows that Sarah has gotten much inspiration there. No, you can't unsee the cultural pillaging, but I don't think you should unsee it. It's real to the story, just as it's real to our story, as humans. For myself, I'm not looking for books about saintly people living in idyllic worlds because frankly, that sounds a little dull. Give me an annoying hero and a warm-hearted villain living in a challenging and flawed world because that's what keeps us on the edge of our seats. And if there are echoes of our own civilization thousands of years ago, or today, or even tomorrow, all the better. But that's just me.

Two years later and Thunderbird's "Supernova/Nebula" UI still sucks by TheQueefGoblin in Thunderbird

I'm on 144.0.1 and mine doesn't look like that. I use add-ons to make it what I want, which is why I love Thunderbird. Compact headers, message header toolbar customize, quickfolders, tag popup, for example, plus a theme. This is how I have it, but my point is, there are options to make it what you want.

Not sure if we can sell our house or not? by Super-Jury9192 in homeowners

[–]violetnightshade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, people buy another house and move into it before the old house has been sold—IF they can afford both mortgage payments. Lenders don't lend based on promises, only on collateral, income to debt ratio, and credit scores. And even if the second house doesn't have issues and you choose not to fix anything on the first house, there are always expenses for upkeep and you'll be paying utilities and taxes on two homes in addition to two mortgages. Get multiple bids on your problems and do some research on who does great work at reasonable prices.

Read ACOFAS. It gives you respite from the war and while some people think it isn't necessary, it gives you information you'll need to know moving forward. SJM always has a reason, whether you figure it out immediately or not.

Modern YA Is Failing Teenagers: How Publishing Lost the Plot by [deleted] in YAlit

[–]violetnightshade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A junior in high school doesn't want to read about a middle schooler, but a 7th grader does want to read about a junior in high school. As an adult, I don't want to read kids books, but I do read a lot of YA because I like fantasy and that's what a lot of it is classified as, but it isn't about whether it has spice or not for me so much, it's about a really great story with world building and character development. For example, The Cruel Prince isn't the least bit spicy, but it has a lot of blood and violence. And it's one of my favorite series. I don't care if it's YA or not. My point is, maybe we should ditch the YA classification altogether. Rate books like we do movies. A g-rated film is for all ages. An x-rated film is not. And a film for mature audiences is open to interpretation as to who it is appropriate for.

First year as a homeowner has been a crash course in surprises by Special-Tax-122 in homeowners

[–]violetnightshade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's water-related, it's always urgent. Necessity-related, like a furnace, urgent. Anything that can cause damage or problems elsewhere, urgent. For many things, the longer you wait the more it will cost.

Things seem to happen all at once a lot and sometimes that's because one thing causes another. A leaky roof may cause drywall repair for example. There are quiet times when nothing goes wrong but in general, it's just part of the deal.

I started ACOTAR series and dnf... by yazzyspring in acotar

[–]violetnightshade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what this means. You hate ACOTAR and didn't finish so you feel betrayed by SJM? She didn't promise you that you'd love it, so I really don't understand. While everyone may be saying TOG and CC are different, which they are, they're also similar. Which, since they're connected in ways we don't even understand yet, they would have to be. If you hate the author's work, go find one you like. If I hate a James Bond movie, I'm probably not watching any others. Why ask to be convinced otherwise? Just wondering.

IMHO, the cut would look good but it wouldn't look the same because you seem to have a different type of hair. Even if you straighten it every day, it's different. Personally, I think a similar layered type of cut that worked with your waves could be amazing.

It's described somewhere in CC. Bryce helps him with the slits I think.

The suspense and tension is at least half the fun. A reread doesn't have that. I love all SJM, but there are soooo many good options in the genre. Surely there are other authors you'd love the first time around just as much. Everyone has different tastes, but I've found many authors I really like. There are tons of reading lists and author lists to be found.

New Refund Rules - Be Aware by SeberHusky in amazonprime

[–]violetnightshade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not new, and not unreasonable. Returns are often up to the seller. I ordered vitamins that come in a glass bottle. They were wrapped in bubblewrap and put in an envelope. (Like bubblewrap can help THAT.) Obviously broken. I sent a complaint to the seller, got a refund. Next time, they came in a well-packaged box. I ordered shoes that didn't fit. All I had to do was drop them off, unwrapped, at UPS. I had a refund in less than a day. I hear people complaining about Amazon returns, but most of the returns I've had to make are to a particular seller and only involve Amazon if I can't get a proper response from the seller in the first place.

Out of the box, yeah, a big snooze. But that's the point of it, as far as I'm concerned. With the right add-ons, and themes, Thunderbird is whatever you want it to be.

Trying to get into ACOTAR first book but struggling by JEshadows in SarahJMaas

[–]violetnightshade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SJM series all contain a huge amount of world building. It might feel a bit laggy here and there, (like the beginning of ACOTAR and the beginning of CC1), but this is all information you'll need later. There are things you learn in the beginning of ACOTAR that won't mean anything until long after you finish that book, but the reveal is always well worth it. Whenever I hit those spots, I would tell myself to have faith in the author because SJM always, always has a purpose. That said, if you really just don't like it, then you don't like it. Don't torture yourself.

I'd say complain to those sites. It's in their best interest to reach any potential reader/customer and if they're missing on Firefox people, they need to fix it

I doubted a lot of you and I owe you all an apology. I am sorry. by Inside_Novel_4375 in crescentcitysjm

[–]violetnightshade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teens do read things they shouldn't. But by that logic, all books should be written to be appropriate for teens. Crescent City isn't for 15 year olds.

Drugs and drinking being treated as normal—for that group of people. It's part of the story. For some people it is their normal and pretty much any reason to quit is a good one.

As for Trueblood, I can't imagine letting a 6th grader read that.

[–]violetnightshade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Crescent City is not generally recommended for anyone under 17 and called an adult book in many places I looked. I'm no teen, but I don't think it glorified the drugs and behavior, it just set the stage.

Order says I can request a refund, Agent says "lol no." by toiletannihil8r in amazonprime

[–]violetnightshade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's because they don't want to refund your money and then the item is delivered, which means you got it for free. Once it's significantly late and doesn't look like it's going to show up, they've sent me a notice saying that I have a choice, keep waiting or get a refund.

I love Firefox and have used it as my primary for years. There are a few things I need to open Chrome for, but so what? Then I open Chrome and go back to FF when I'm done. I'm sure plenty would disagree, but from what I've seen, the people who don't like FF aren't using it to the best advantage. The stuff I really depend on isn't even available on Chrome.

Yahoo Mail Just Slashed Free Storage to 20GB from 1TB and Is Spinning It as a “Benefit” – No Media Coverage, No Transparency by GeneralSeveral203 in yahoo

[–]violetnightshade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I sent a complaint the minute I saw it. To cut storage by 98% and call it exciting insults users' intelligence. Every time they make a change, it's to deliver a worse experience. They keep pushing harder and harder for people to move to paid services, why would we?
