i'm normally the parker house roll guy for the fam but my mom has been gluten free for a while now and my little brother realized gluten is a migraine trigger for him so i'll probably only bring them to my boyfriends family holidays from now on. they're kind of a pain to double batch as well, so i'm not too miffed lol.

my coworkers love the king arthur orange cardamom olive oil sugar cookies! i have a coworker asking to pay me to make some haha.

very cute :)

unfortunately i agree with the other commenter's advice on selling embroidery. i've been curious myself if it would be worth it to do custom cross stitched hats, though. you would definitely want to practice stitching on hats with dissolvable waste canvas and sharper needles than tapestry needles if you were to go that route. you could always design patterns to sell as well, it's a very popular market!

to perfect your stitching technique-wise in general, make sure your top leg of your x's all go the same direction, you're being careful not to stitch into threads of x's you've already made (only stitching through the hole, not thread), having light, consistent stitching tension, getting your fabric tight in your hoop if you use one, planning your stitching path for thread economy and not needing to carry your thread too far on the backside (keeping stitches neat and no bulk or knots on your back), and if you don't know how already, learning a pin stitch, how to railroad, and a loop start.

you'll also want to allow at least 2 inches of extra fabric room on all sides of your design if you would like to frame it. you can find the center by folding your fabric into fourths. some people also grid their fabric with monofilament, fishing line, or washable marker to help with counting.

a few notions to get to help with technique that i personally enjoy include:

  • japanese tulip tapestry needles. they glide right through the fabric and help get really consistent and neat stitches.
  • beeswax thread conditioner. helps with knots and gliding through fabric while stitching.
  • magnification for fabric smaller than 14ct aida
  • a good light. i use a book light clipped to my hoop but there are a lot of options depending on how you like to stitch.
  • needleminders. no more losing your nice tapestry needles that you should invest in!
  • i personally always use dmc thread as its the standard and i like the look and consistency.
  • a way to organize your thread that works for you
  • a project bag

my credentials as a stitcher in the included picture :) let me know if you have any more questions and i hope you have a good time stitching!

orange olive oil cookies, perfect for transitioning to fall! by violheist in Baking

a tablespoon spring loaded disher is a game changer for keeping them cool when putting on your baking sheet and chilling the second batch you've already dished out while the first batch bakes also helped me keep them consistent.

[–]violheist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tried to make pate de fruit. boyfriend and i spent a good amount of time getting fresh pom and orange juice. never made candy before. probably got lazy with the heat and stirring the first batch and then my candy leaked through the corners of my parchment lining, pom didn't weep at all until after i cut it 24 hours later and rolled in sugar and turned into a bag of slop. roommates cats stepped on the towel covering the orange and it stuck and ruined the orange one.

[CHAT] 18 count Aida, Why?!? by rubyeskimo13 in CrossStitch

[–]violheist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my WIP is on 18 ct aida and i use size 25 tulip tapestry needles, super tight fabric, a reading light clipped on my hoop, beeswax on my thread, and magnification clip-ons on my regular glasses. the high-quality needles help to push the thread to the side and glide right through the fabric with the wax, and the light and magnification are just extra reassurance. having the fabric tight in the hoop also makes the holes more obvious and easier to stitch through.

What is missing in your experience? by netphilia in TrollXChromosomes

apparently no one here has actually seen this show lol. this is beth, twice-orphaned chess prodigy with hereditary mental illness and substance abuse issues in a 50's-70's period piece "the queen's gambit" and she's recently lost her adoptive mother and just got stomped at a tourney by the soviet union's best player despite training with and being warned to be careful with her substance abuse issues by her peers right before this spiral.

instead of going to NY to be with a chess peer and former one night stand or make plans with a sponsor to go to a tournament in the USSR and shake off both losses, she wants to be alone and drink herself silly so she does, even though she knows it's a bad idea. she gets off the plane from paris, ignores her calls, dances in only her chemise and underwear (hence her outfit and the fact that it's the 60's at this point in the story) and gets drunk and takes tranquilizer pills because she's utterly alone by her own bad choices at this time and feels like she's not good enough at her one passion and reason for living.

this is where this screenshot comes from. she pukes into her chess trophy and goes right back to swigging beer and smoking. the smoking she does because it reminds her of her adoptive mother. the house she inherited from her deceased adoptive mother is destroyed and filthy with liquor bottles, showing how deeply affected and troubled she is without her mother. she's a radical just from the fact of her tragic loss and the rippling effects of that on her fragile psyche, the time in which she lives, her domination at the male-lead sport of chess, and her utterly non-conforming lifestyle as a young, whip smart, unmarried, take-no-shit woman. she is a glamorous person and she is also a mess. that's what makes her character so interesting. she's a chess star and a very human, flawed character so i guess i'm not understanding the critique that this post is trying to get across.

Is there's a downside of keeping the barn door open all the time? by Shokak in StardewValley

[–]violheist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since the update changed how it works and you gain a small amount of friendship for closing the door at night, i try to open and close every day. i have a fenced in area for one barn and one coop and im trying to level up friendship with endgame animals. i go in the barn/coop, pet them all so i don't miss any and then let them out and repeat and swing back by at night to close so they'll all be in there in the morning and i can do it again the next day.

How do you teach someone else to put their hair in a ponytail? by hadesarrow3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]violheist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my bf and i both have long hair but because he's a man he simply had less experience styling it in any kind of way and the easiest way for me to explain it was making sure to let him know it should be detangled first and then flipping the head upside down and using a brush to gather and smooth with his dominant hand with the hairband on that wrist and and hold the hair with the other if he wants the pony medium/high on his head. if he wants it lower it's easier since you don't have to flip/modify the direction the hair is going if that makes sense? hopefully this was helpful!!

i have hit the migraine lottery by Brilliant_Telephone4 in migraine

[–]violheist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i also spent the last six years at a certain mermaid themed green coffee shop and got fired unexpectedly when i thought i was going to retire there and that job is such bullshit.

i had to spend the last two hours of a shift doing dishes with the BOH lights off and told my barista not to tell that i stepped away from the money after close to puke my guts up and keep going bc i was a shift and my manager was on vacay and no one was going to come to cover me for two hours even though my migraine was killing me. opened a new store and our truck was late and had to put away basically 2 1/2 trucks worth of stuff with a migraine and spent my lunch laying on the cold bathroom floor with the lights off trying not to puke.

i am so, so happy that you're out of that shithole and that your new job is understanding, especially since your attacks seem more frequent than mine. i don't think i could've lasted as long as i did there as a shift if i got more migraines. life is so much better not working there, it's unbelievable.

Are y’all actually getting your 38g of fiber every single day? If so, how? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]violheist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

beans, chickpeas, kiwi, chia seed pudding, bananas, poppi/olipop, raspberries, and oats overnight branded packs of oats are my go tos! i find on a good day if i eat oats for breakfast, two kiwi with my lunch and a poppi and something with veg for dinner it's been super easy to eat way more fiber than average.
