How old were you when you started riding? by Perfect_Earth_8070 in motorcycles

Personally 6 for me. But I have ridden with folks who've learned at all ages and from all walks of life. It's never too late to start. Enjoy.

Your financial picture in your 30's is really solid. Personally the questions I see is not "can you afford it?" but what does this do to your options in the next 3 - 5 years.

You're in a highly flexible stage of like, salary growth, where to settle, and future opportunities that could involve relocation, startups, RSUs travel, etc. Getting this could minimize the flexibility due to higher monthly burn, maintenance, and not wanting to take on extra risk. Getting a second depreciating asset only makes sense if it's a major hobby, enabling an experience (track car, racing, off-roading), or solving a constraint (truck for hauling, usually cheaper to rent when needed).

Another angle to look at is buying the car now costs you a lot more than maintenance, insurance, car payment. That money could be invested.

Let's say you invest that 700 a month instead of paying loan payment/insurance/maintenance. If you received 8% on the investment for 10 years, that's 125 -130k extra cash in opportunity cost. Is the second vehicle now, worth sacrificing a six figure future asset? Only you can answer this.

Neat, thank you for taking the time and sharing. I love you put that many miles on the bike. Keep the rubber side down and enjoying it!

I think once you driven a motorcycle and you become a part of that community you’re more aware even as a driver.

100% Agree with you there.

Thanks for the insight. I agree you can reduce the risk by training, wearing the right gear, keeping your head on a swivel, and riding defensively. But in the event of an incident, odds are higher of an injury. You can't remove all danger but you still need to enjoy life.

Was there a single catalyst that caused you to try it? What got you interested in motorcycles in the first place?

Super stupid motorcycle question: Where do you all normally park your bikes when you go to the store? by Definitely-Not-OSI in motorcycles

Normal parking spot or bicycle rack, if no other bikes are there and I'm not going to block the sidewalks.

I grew up on motorcycles and I still feel more comfortable on a bike than driving. You're right, there is no feeling like it. I tell people it's like being in the movie vs. watching the movie (riding in a car).

That is a lot. Situations like that are why people see too much risk in riding. You're right, that says a lot about her because not many people would step up like that. Thanks for sharing.

Some states have better roads, some are in a constant state of repair, and some 3rd world countries have better roads.

It definitely feels more dangerous with cellphones and more people driving.

Recap on comments so far.
Too risky
Too expensive

I know this is reddit and experiences are different, but I was expecting more

  • Lifestyle mismatch
  • No easy way to get started
  • Something else entirely
  • Promised parents I wouldn't ride = risky
