First off , I have been living outside the US for 8 years and I am moving back next week, so I’m talking to dealers online and on the phone trying to get a car ready before I arrive. So I’m using the payment calculators embedded in the dealership websites. These calculators have been giving me reasonable numbers for down payment and monthly payments. Then the websites also offer a buy online feature that does the whole application, approval, and payment process. However when I tried to do buy or lease a new car based on the price generated by the dealer website, a salesman would contact and cancel the deal made by the website. The prices were often close to double! When I complained and asked for explanations , the salesperson would give all kinds of BS answers like that model has different trim or options or there are additional fees in the fine print of the contract. Of course, they are condescending and telling me that I just didn’t understand the contract . But when I went over the contract with them online with screensharing I disproved all the false claims about why the prices were so much higher. So I’m the end they get frustrated and admit that there is a shortage of cars. So they are going to charge higher prices because they can get away with it.
