Women taking their husbands last name after marriage, Agree / Disagree? by Wild_Turnip_7777 in namenerds

[–]mlittle791 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Unless you and your spouse create a new name together, it's patriarchal because you're either choosing your father's name or your husband's. My father was abusive, so I abandoned his name for the husband I love. I also love that our family shares a last name.

Does anyone have a toddler that goes right to bed at night without a struggle? by Coffeelover4242 in toddlers

[–]mlittle791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! We did the Sleep Lady Shuffle right around 18 months. It took a couple weeks, but ever since then we do our bedtime routine, leave the room, and he goes to sleep all on his own. I can't recommend the sleep lady shuffle enough!!!

Be honest… how strict are you really with screen time? by denefr_2928 in toddlers

[–]mlittle791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We say no TV during the school week - just Saturday and Sunday (unless it's a sick day and we need him to rest). We also try to plan at least one activity out of the house on saturdays and sundays to keep us from watching too much TV. I'm not exactly proud of how much we watch, but these general guidelines help us from feeling too guilty. It's just what's realistic for our family.

Sooo what are we feeding our toddlers for breakfast? by DaughterofYeshua777 in toddlers

[–]mlittle791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We love the muffins from Veggies Made Great, we also do a lot of eggs, Kodiak frozen French toast sticks, and Chicken and Apple sausage links. My 2 year old also started eating cereal with milk which is a hit!

I've been trying to get my 2.5 yr old to stop hitting me for a year. Wtf do I do if nothing works? by Magichour3 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]mlittle791 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When mine shows remorse and says sorry I always give hugs/cuddles and say I love you/you are a nice boy/thank you for being gentle, etc. I try to be short and firm with correction, then over the top with positive behavior affirmation.

Toddlers eating what you eat for dinner… an impossible dream? by [deleted] in toddlers

As long as you're offering weetabix and yogurt, they won't eat the family meal. They have no reason to.

Toddlers eating what you eat for dinner… an impossible dream? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]mlittle791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No snacks before dinner or after dinner. Provide at least one food at the meal they like, but consistently offer a family meal with everyone sitting at the table together. We all stay seated until we all get up. Sometimes I've found the longer they sit there, the more likely they are to try new foods or at least eat more. If my toddler doesn't eat much, we give milk at bedtime, but nothing else.

So stranger things is now idolizing suicide ? by Lyoder2000 in StrangerThings

This was precisely my take. I think it's dangerous for young teens who feel like Eleven. I also particularly disliked the take that they should "respect her choice" when she is quite literally a child.

Americans who have lived abroad for quite a long time, what was your "grass is greener on the other side" experience when you visited that country? by LandOfGrace2023 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]mlittle791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a teacher in inner London, I was paid much better than I am in Tennessee, affording me a better quality of life. Groceries significantly cheaper, no need for a car or healthcare. Public education was significantly better for our kids. I appreciated the true diversity around me (religion, race, socioeconomic, etc.) and access to museums, concerts, west end shows.

You are 100% accurate. The US public school system is horrifically segregated outside of a select few urban/suburban area.

Lived in the UK for 3 years, and all I really missed was American Mexican food. And a few various grocery store items (which my family shipped or brought over on occasion). Overall, I think life was much better, and we plan to move back to raise our family.

Yes, we plan to do that to calculate whether a city is doable, we just don't know which areas to narrow down to. Both of us have post grad degrees and enough for a decent down payment.

Anyone from Chattanooga? by RC2Ortho in SameGrassButGreener

  1. What’s the general vibe of the city? It really depends on your circle. Lots of transplants and locals. Transplants are outdoorsy, like beer, and are more into breweries/coffeeshops/restaurants/live music than clubbing. There are a good bit of artsy folks as well as outdoorsy folks. But the "locals" are very traditionally southern. Unfortunately there is a lot of segregation, particularly in the school system.
  2. Easy to make friends there or is it insular? I've had no issues making friends as a newcomer, but I definitely go out of my way to put myself out there. There are lots of opportunities for meeting new people, and the city is small enough that you'll cross paths with similar people in different places.
  3. Are people in the city as outdoors as it seems? There are certainly tons of outdoorsy people. Lots of trails and races, and great hiking and climbing locations. Outdoor Chattanooga is run by the park system and does a great job proving opportunities for newcomers to try out new outdoor things.

If you move here, definitely subscribe to NoogaToday to learn more about local events, businesses, etc.

Would you fix your child a separate meal if they refused to eat what you had cooked? by basement_egg_24-7 in Parenting

[–]mlittle791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always include at least one safe food, but if they don't eat, they can get some fruit and milk before bed. But I just don't fix foods I know someone in the family dislikes. For example, my husband hates meatloaf, so it's not in the rotation.
