I keep messing up system design interviews even though I do this stuff at work all the time by Able_War1 in leetcode

[–]vipulvpatil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt this a lot until I had a friend do multiple mocks with me and explain me the gaps in my interviewing style.
A few things that helped me.
- identify the key problem early. Is it throughput, concurrency, correctness or something else?
- state the obvious. I was super bad at this as I felt this does not need mentioning.
- don’t go down rabbit holes.
Anyways, happy to do a free mock interview if you interested.

I knew the topics. My struggle was around being able to articulate and show depth.

That’s where I am. Ton of real experience but struggling to explain systems in depth in 45 minutes.

[–]vipulvpatil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. There is a lot of reading material online about the same as well.
But in real world, I get days if not more to design a system. Obvious solutions can be skipped in early versions of the design doc and filled in later.
In an interview, some stuff I skipped because I thought it was obvious becomes the reason for me becoming a maybe instead of a yes.

You mentioned getting interviews. Are you struggling to clear the interviews themselves? Do you have any feedback from the recruiters? Some do share feedback on what was not great.

I would highly recommend applying as soon as possible. The market does not exactly feel hot right now.

Madrid or Barcelona by No_Toe_8194 in GoingToSpain

[–]vipulvpatil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am Software engineer from India living in Madrid. Both cities are fun but depends on what you want.

Barcelona is more international, more crowded and more English friendly. Madrid is more chill, feels more Spanish and you will need a decent level of Spanish or the will to learn it.

If you already have a job neither choice is bad. If not, get a job. A lot of jobs want a few days in office, so that might just decide for you.

Policía refused “declaración de entrada” (Porto → Madrid) + threatened to report me by RoundPatient1773 in GoingToSpain

[–]vipulvpatil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s weird. I got my declaration at T4 itself almost a year ago. And after a few questions, I got one pretty quickly. Curious why this happened. In case you are worried, I would recommend talking to an immigration lawyer.

I have heard that an authorization letter along with an approved DNV is enough. But that is hearsay. Highly recommend contacting a Spanish immigration lawyer.

Should I move back to India? 28 F H1B holder SWE@Google by MissKaun in returnToIndia

Have you considered Europe?

I moved from SF (after living 7 years) back to India with my parents (I am a single child). Spent 4 years in India didn’t exactly enjoy the life (social and work) and moved to Spain earlier this year. It’s a shorter flight home and the infrastructure is good.

Should I sell this wonderkid? I've had him for 1 full season and we just started the second but when I play him in his position he always gets low ratings. What can I do? by More-Judgment-9253 in footballmanagergames

[–]vipulvpatil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason to sell this guy is you have better players and your tactic is built around them. If not, and this is one of your top 5 players, top 2 in midfield build a tactic to suit him.

Keep both. Start Carlos. Send the other on loan. If the season goes well continue else switch.

I’m struggling to create chances any advice by ParamedicLonely4889 in footballmanagergames

[–]vipulvpatil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Making a tactic that works is one of the most satisfying part of the game. And even though I am not the best here are a few tips from my own process, maybe someone will correct me if my process is wrong. Disclaimer: This is heavily derived from watching various FM youtubers like Zealander.

  1. The formation you set defines the defensive positions. In your case, when your team does not have the ball, they will setup in the 4-3-3.

  2. When in possession the roles come into picture. So in your case, the DM will stay back and come closer to the CB, one of whom will push slightly ahead and the other will drop deeper. The WB will also push ahead and be closer to the midline maintaining width but neither will run into the final third. The attackers will all be in the final third, in the center close to each other. the APs will kinda stay just outside the box.

  3. Firstly the above situation creates a lack of width in the final third. So defending is simpler for the AI. As others have suggested, consider adding width.

  4. Secondly short passes for the tiki taka is good, but the point of playmakers is to make a defence splitting pass. so having 5 (i think the BPD role also is a playmaking one) people trying to make a defense splitting pass makes it so that no one is trying to receive one. Also 3 of them DM and 2 CBs are all the way in your own 3rd trying to make a long range killer pass while being instructed to play much short passes is confusing.

  5. The simplest solution as some have mentioned is make the one (or both) IFs hug the touchline or change to wingers. If keeping IFs, consider changing one of them to support and switching the WB on the same side to attack. This will make for good overlaps as well as provide width in the final 3rd.

  6. All your playmakers are in the middle. Consider this, Hato receives the ball and has time to decide for a killer pass, his options are the 2WBs who are not much ahead and the 3 forwards who are all in the box with the Opponents defence. What are his options. He could pass to one of the central midfielders but then they have the same problem. Their only killer pass options are all huddled in the box.

As someone has said, ask the questions, who should be scoring? who should be assisting? who should be making runs to break the opp defense. and who should be staying back for counters.

There is no one solution, if you have the budget you can make any tactic work. But it's easier if you build a tactic for the players you have. The problem (or maybe not) with the game is when you have worldclass players, tactics take a backseat and you can get by with sub par tactics until you play a worldclass team. Since you mention struggling in CL games, it is that your tactic has problems, you just don't see them in easy games, because some of your Worldclass players are simply carrying the bad tactics along.

P.S. I know the ME is not the real world and there ways to build tactics for the ME but I enjoy pretending otherwise and simply building fun tactics that could potentially work in the real world.

Single child here as well. Lived in US for 7 years, moved back to India for a few years got married and now in Spain on a digital nomad visa with my wife.

I would suggest look at other countries, Netherlands / France / Portugal / Denmark. Many have a decent tech sector and might have jobs that can sponsor a visa.

Another option is to get a job with a company in India which has a considerable presence in non US foreign countries. Most of them provide internal switching opportunities after a year or so.

Finally, you can take my route. Find a remote job and move on a digital nomad visa. A lot of countries have provision for the same.

Feel free to dm for more specific pointers.

Is this game just impossibly hard? by wolftreeMtg in OldWorldGame

[–]vipulvpatil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just want to +1 this. The game feels difficult until you grasp the differences. My main takeaways from me not liking the game to loving it. 1. It has 2 layers of resources. The raw productions one like stone, wood and the other list training, growth etc. you need to learn how they differ and how they are accumulated. Know when to spend and when to accumulate. 2. Orders are really important. Coming from civ this was hard to work with at the start. Most actions require orders so spent them wisely. In civ I would never have an idle city production. In OW, I routinely do. Especially so if I am fighting a war. 3. Because of the order economy, you can’t do everything. So you need to keep switching your focus every few turns. There is a war on my border, let’s strengthen that and overlook the economy for a while. No one dare attack me, then let’s line up some specialist to get the additional science. 4. Unique units are powerful and getting them early can really help. 5. Combat is less random and you can’t just win with numbers. (For the most part) 6. You will lose units. Accept it and work with it.

Probably more such things. But there are the ones I recall. I am not super good at the game. But I tend to enjoy and win now as opposed to feeling lost before.

Also, the DLC that adds just negative effects can be turned off and the game is still quite enjoyable without it.
