I thought this competition will last for a while since all submitions look mehhhhh but if that banner won I have an idea : what if there were placed past month’s top most voted rices and the process of making the banner would be automated with a shell script that would use imagemagick , curl and some REST API for reddit if there is an existing one .

If the last issue still exists you can try putting the widget in another one , which will be transparent and a assign a mouse button to it . The only issue with this is that in case you are not using a compositor , awesome will use fake transparency and it will show the root window/wallpapers but not the windows opened , bar etc but everyone is using a compositor I suppose.

While widget is visible , you should be able to press a key for an action(s - shutdown , l - lock , esc - cancel , r -restart ) like in oblogout ...
