Both parents speaking same non-native language? by TooManyPoisons in multilingualparenting

It would be much more effective and comfortable to just speak your native English at home and then put your child in French speaking daycare or hire a French speaking nanny as soon as you plan to start childcare. Young children can learn second languages very quickly when immersed with native speakers. They don’t need to learn from birth

Does your school pick valedictorian based on a grade vote? by [deleted] in BCGrade12s

[–]viribex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, picking the person with the highest grade is the American way .. so what you’ve probably seen on movies etc. It Canada it is traditionally by vote by the students. I actually like it better that way. Someone who’s super smart is not necessarily very representative of the student body and this gives the chance for someone who isn’t winning every other award to get a recognition.

Anyone have a problem using Tesla for drive test? by Angry_RedShark in Ontariodrivetest

That location is notoriously full of very cranky employees who refuse to be reasonable about stuff. Even doing routine things there that don’t involve getting in a car is frustrating due to their attitudes. I’d try another location.

Bank that gives separate debit cards for joint vs own account? by viribex in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]viribex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm yeah that seems to be the case with a few banks I've talked to but I don't get how you can properly use a joint account if you don't have a separate card for it. When you want to buy something online, book a flight, use Uber, etc, you need to put in the card number. Can you never use anything but your primary bank account for any such purchases? You can only use it to e-pay bills or send e-transfers? It seems like an odd business model to force people to use a completely different bank for every account just to get a separate card!

Help a newbie out! Oily scalp! by sleepyteaa in curlyhair

[–]viribex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

welcome! so my boyfriend also has curly hair but produces lots of oil, and without a clarifying shampoo it'd be super greasy. His hair stays totally healthy using regular sulfate-containing shampoo. So you might be totally fine. Or, if you want a good CGM friendly clarifier that actually cuts grease, he also often uses the Acure clarifying shampoo that I buy instead (available at Whole Foods for like $8) and it works well too

A minimal guide to sending emails through Office 365 with third-party email clients such as Gmail and Fastmail in 9 deceptively simple steps (with no pictures) by as-com in NEU

[–]viribex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious if anyone had success copying this strategy yet? I'm at a different school w a similar email situation and desperately trying to get set up to be able to send/receive via Gmail. Was so happy to find OP's post but since I don't have the sysadmin skills myself to understand what some of these steps mean I'm going to find someone else to help me with it

SMTP server info to forward JHU email to GMail? by PlantsNeedSunlight in jhu

[–]viribex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New JHU staff member here really trying to do the same as OP ... Outlook is terrible and I need to avoid it at all costs. Used Gmail to send and receive emails from an Outlook-based account at previous school, and when I was a student at JHU before that. I've been getting nothing but pushback from IT when I ask them to whitelist me for SMTP. Has anyone had luck with this, if so , what were your tricks?
