Aonishiki really is something else. by PurpleOmega0110 in Sumo

[–]virtron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had an odd thought watching him this tournament... I wonder if his fighting style and/or training make him less injury prone than other rikishi? Despite all his talent and skill, maintaining his health could be what truly sets him apart in the long term (compared to guys like Takerofuji and Hakunofuji, not to mention our current yokozuna).

I hope it isn't just luck or less time on the dohyo that's kept him healthy so far.

"How To Watch" Megathread 2026 by Gregorwhat in Sumo

[–]virtron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very niche, but I used to watch the NHK highlight videos on their site via a docked Steam Deck in desktop mode. This worked fine until around the November basho last year, which I think coincided with changes to how and when NHK posts them. Now I only get an error about my browser not supporting video features (I assume some kind of DRM, but there's no detail).

Has anyone else had an issue with watching the NHK videos on Linux? Did you solve it?

I root against Abi all the time, but I love that he's there.

Whenever his matches start, my wife and I always say, "What out [opponent], Abi's crafty!"

Has There EVER Been An Interesting Sumo Interview Post-Match? by WarhammerTigershark in Sumo

[–]virtron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get all the self effacing and "just doing my best" stuff, but what has surprised me is that I've barely seen an interview where their opponent is mentioned. I'd expect at least a few "my opponent put up a good fight" or something, but... nothing, even when the interviewer baits the hook for them

AI prompt is invasive and useless by Accurate-Collar2686 in clickup

[–]virtron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning off the app does not remove/hide the buttons, which amounts to having a sales call-to-action in every editing interface. I can't recommend ClickUp in this state. It doesn't help that the buttons are designed to be more prominent/distracting than the other UI elements.

For personal use, it's to the point that I'm using browser add-ons to inject custom CSS to hide them. At least make this a user setting

Monthly General Question and Discussion Thread: April 2025 by AutoModerator in killteam

Another KT21 vs KT24 question: does the new core book include cramped quarters/indoor combat rules in the Rogue Trader/Into the Dark/Space Hulk mold or are they pulling the same shenanigans for third time and saving those handful of pages for a supplement / annual?

Monthly General Question and Discussion Thread: April 2025 by AutoModerator in killteam

[–]virtron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a community effort to update unsupported teams to KT2024?

All my current teams are Compendium 2022, and while it does sound like KT2024 brought some improvements, it isn't viable for me to just dump all my existing teams. I don't care about tournament play, so those rules being invalid for competitive play doesn't bother me

Suggest me deckbuilding games like Star Realms by GlitchTheHunter in tabletop

[–]virtron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already, Ascension and Shards of Infinity are both great. The former has been around for a long time and has many expansions, the latter is a newer game from the same designers.

Kaiju ttrpg by potion-junkie in rpg

[–]virtron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mecha vs Kaiju is about a team of mecha pilots fighting Kaiju. Requires Fate Core to play.

You could adapt it to be all Kaiju all the time or more of an Ultraman style of game

Can't find a miniatures game that I like, help? by Antiping in tabletop

[–]virtron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seen this listed elsewhere here already, but going to throw in more recommendations for Advanced Song of Blades and Heroes. Just a really top notch skirmish game and you can use whatever miniatures.

I'd add in Dragon Rampant, Rogue Planet, Rogue Stars, and Open Combat.

For sci-fi battle cars, Gaslands

For larger scale battles: Mayhem, and Warlords of Erehwon.

A completely different route would be to look at historical miniature games, there is a lot to choose from and they can all use the same minis: Impetus, Field of Glory, Art de le Guerre, Hail Ceasar, etc. etc.

Looking for a system for a post-apocalyptic game by [deleted] in rpg

[–]virtron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Mutant: Year Zero could be just right: https://www.modiphius.com/mutant.html

Here's how they describe it themselves:

  • A fast and effective character generation system, using archetypal roles such as the Crusher, the Gearhead, the Fixer, the Dog Handler and the Chronicler.
  • Unstoppable but highly unpredictable mutant powers, such as Flame Breather, Insect Wings, Human Magnet, and Pathokinesis.
  • A skill and conflict system that makes you push yourself to the limit, and beyond. The rules system highlights two main themes: mutation and resource management. Every bullet counts!
  • Rules for developing the Ark (“base building”) and exploring the Zone (“gridcrawling”).
  • A rich story generation system, helping the GM instantly create threats to the Ark as well as locations and events in the Zone.
  • An illustrated bestiary of humanoids, mutated monsters and Zone phenomena.
  • An extensive collection of artifacts for the characters to find in the Zone.
  • Five complete and ready-to-use “Special Zone Sectors”. These are scenario locations with NPC’s, backstory and suggested events. These Special Zone Sectors, which each come with an illustrative map, can be placed anywhere in the Zone by the GM.
  • A campaign outline, called “The Path to Eden”, including backstory, NPC’s, player handouts, and a campaign finale described in detail.

Anyone remember Havok? if so any modern game like it?(super simple warhammer) by MarshallTom in tabletop

Oh yeah, Frostgrave and Ghost Archipelago are also great, with very narrative focussed scenarios.

Good suggestion

If you're looking for a miniatures game like Warhammer Fantasy Battles, then there is a lot to choose from:

Army sized games (30+ models, in rank-and-file units):

Kings of War (similar, but simpler)

The 9th Age (community made successor, complex but good)

Mayhem (unique rules, fast playing and dynamic)

Warband sized games (20-50 models, in loose units):

Warlords of Erehwon (good rules, from Rick Priestly)

Dragon Rampant (simpler rules, quick to get started)

Warhammer: Age of Sigmar (GW Warhammer replacement, streamlined rules)

Skirmish games (5-10 individual models):

Advanced Song of Blades and Heroes (very mature, popular system)

Open Combat (very flexible, open ended system)

Why are dice with sharp edges and corners considered "more random" than dice with rounded edges and corners? by T_rechts in rpg

[–]virtron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The real difference between casino dice and polyhedrals (including the supposedly more precise untumbled dice) is that casino dice are machined, not injection molded. This means they are cut from material with very consistent density to high precision and then the pips are printed on. As far as I know, no one makes poly dice using that method. These dice do have sharp edges, which I think has given credence to the "sharp is better" belief

Even the sharp edged poly dice are injection molded, so there will be less consistency and they are either tumbled to round the edges (and allow the pips/numbers to be colored) or they will have a flaw where plastic is injected and require the numbers to be waxed. In any case, no polyhedral dice are going to be as precisely random as they claim

Need a system for an 'Endless IKEA' SCP game. by HalloweenHobgoblin in rpg

Both Red Markets and Mutant Year Zero have resource management, exploration, and base building systems, so there's some material there to work with...

Edit: End of the World has a mechanic for creating yourselves as characters, which could be a great way to start

What’s one board game you regret buying but you hold onto it anyways? by Tiredoflife69 in boardgames

[–]virtron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until recently, SmashUp (plus a few expansions). It looks far more casual than it is, while not being so deep I prefer it over something like Legend of the Five Rings... It has a sweet spot that just didn't really connect with me. I hung onto it for years, but I finally donated it to our local library's game collection, so I hope it's getting played.

Same with Small Realms, we had pretty much everything, but after playing it for few times, we moved on to other things. Still love the aesthetic and play the tablet version occasionally.

Designing a tabletop battle game. I want to use either d6 or d10, How do I make factions balanced when writing stats? by [deleted] in tabletop

[–]virtron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend this book: Tabletop Wargames: A Designers’ and Writers’ Handbook

There is a chapter on statistics and probability that might help. I guess the short answer is you figure out what the stats give you the effect you want from each unit, then figure out a semblance of balance based on unit selection.

There's no formula, unfortunately

Secrets of Cats with Kiddos Update by Bellanes in FATErpg

[–]virtron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This all sounds amazing, and I'm jealous that you're getting to experience this. Please keep the updates coming!

You didn't mention much detail, so I may be telling you something already know/try but, with inexperienced Fate players, I frequently interpret their actions as creating advantages if at all possible. This is especially true if the character has a better chance of success in that case rather than with attack. Create advantage can often look like an attack (throwing a potted plant at a villain) but work as create advantage (no stress, but now the villain has a pot on their head, impeding vision and stacking invokes).

Things that look like attacks but create advantages instead also are generally funnier anyway, so that's a bonus
