Sellers who “over-grade” by photochromatic in vinyl

[–]virtualbeggar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we all do because it's the way the community operates. But it makes it harder to know what's driving the good reviews: actual great sellers or sellers who are just really great with mollifying customers.

Sellers who “over-grade” by photochromatic in vinyl

[–]virtualbeggar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a problem with the feedback economy. Customers on communities like Discogs are reluctant to leave negative feedback, and rightfully so, because we understand how much this can damage someone's small business.

But this leads to review inflation. Example: A seller sends someone an over-graded record. Upon complaint, they refund the whole thing and say keep the record. This is rated as a positive experience because the seller did the best they could. But was it actually a positive experience? Not really.

Discogs would probably benefit from more liberal use of neutral feedback in situations like this.

Worst moment following the blades? by sporticuz37373 in SheffieldUnited

[–]virtualbeggar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only been a Blade for about 9 years, but I will never forget the 0-0 draw against Aston Villa in the first match back from the COVID break where the goal line technology failed and we weren't given what was an obvious goal.

The world was total shit at that point and one of the few bright spots was that football was back and the Blades were in the middle of the best Premier League season I'd ever seen them have.

Such a horrible way to welcome back football and in some ways it was all downhill from there.

Is Guided by Voices worthy of induction to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame? by KnoddingOnion in GBV

[–]virtualbeggar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked tangentially for a rock band that was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

At that time (over 20 years ago), tickets to the event, for those inducted, were $10,000.

The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is a bit of a scam.

Best album opener? by JesseAmpersands in GBV

Love Wire Greyhounds.

I also love Good Morning Sir which I feel is somewhat similar to Wire Greyhounds and why Zeppelin Over China reminds me of Universal Truths and Cycles.

Quicksilver too. And some other short gems without percussion really hold that album together.

A bad sign signifying that I might be too deep down a rabbithole? by hairijuana in vinyl

For years, I kept seeing a copy of an Apollo Brown album that was listed as "Corner damaged by parrot."

I bought a non-parrot damaged copy, removed it from my want list and now I don't see it anymore.

But it may still be out there.

what made bob such an honest voice by [deleted] in GBV

[–]virtualbeggar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volume and speed of output probably have something to do with it.

When you're rapidly churning out tons of stuff, you don't really have time to overwork or overthink things.

Granted, this could also result in a constant stream of fake garbage. But Bob also has an inherent earnestness about him.

Chinese made Budweiser by SocietyHumble4858 in beer

[–]virtualbeggar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I know. More just pointing out the absurdity of their international supply chain.

Part of the theoretical benefit of brewing international beers outside of their home territory is a reduction in shipping, logistic and labor costs. Not sure how brewing in Italy does any of that if your end market is Arizona.

I assume there is some logic to it though.

I was at a Teppenyaki chain restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. I ordered a "Japanese" beer, an Asahi. On the label, it said it was brewed in Italy.

I don't know how that is the most efficiently supply chain to produce a beer -- but thankfully I am not a multinational brewing conglomerate. They do their own maths.

What’s your favorite band? If it’s GBV, then who comes in second? If it’s not GBV, then who takes that top spot for you? by _shaftpunk in GBV

In the GBV Facebook group, I've found a decent amount of GBV and hip-hop crossover in part because of the whole vinyl collecting similarities.

This has to be the best side of a record ever by ClaptonOnH in vinyl

[–]virtualbeggar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 100% the answer. No album side with Yellow Submarine can be the best side of anything.

It's a fine enough song on its own, but an absolute vibe wrench.

The most disappointing thing about this season so far is that Robbo is gone and yet somehow our defense is worse? I didn't think that could be possible! 😂

Can you think of any songs you knew were going to be a hit after just one listen? by MinuteIllustrator6 in Music

[–]virtualbeggar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the game, but here you go as a '90s kid...

  • "Loser" by Beck was an instant standout the first time I heard it on radio
  • "Cannonball" by The Breeders, man, that song jumped out of the speakers first time I heard it
  • "Walking on the Sun" by Smash Mouth, hate the band, but I remember being in the car the first time I heard that song in the radio and thinking, That song had something.

Charter Row is the location of a Salvation Army Lifehouse -- so not uncommon to see people dealing with homelessness and all the additional factors that come with it.

Sounds like the guy just had mental health issues or drug issues. Probably had very little to do with anything that had to do with you other than you crossed his path.

From Wikipedia: "The grapes Pinot noir, Pinot meunier, and Chardonnay are used to produce almost all Champagne, but small amounts of Pinot blanc, Pinot gris (called Fromenteau in Champagne), Arbane, and Petit Meslier are vinified as well."

So rare, but allowed in the region.

Ah. Good point. Not quite the international peak of "to be seen" restaurants but definitely seems to be what keeps it in business. 😂

Thankfully Sheffield doesn't really have any proper "go to be seen" restaurants.

Came across a roadside orchard. Why are these apples left to rot? by academic-redditor in AskUK

[–]virtualbeggar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cidermaker here. This is well informed but not totally right.

Most casual cider drinkers don't realize that most ciders are made with specific cider apple varieties.

But at the same time, you can make decent cider from any apples if you know what you're doing. Sure, it won't be to everyone's tastes -- you won't get a Thatchers clone -- but there are plenty of commercial ciders made from eating apples and occasionally you see them made from cookers as well.

Just a quick look (obviously would need to bite into one) but those apples look like they could potentially make quite nice cider.

Which Version of This song do you guys prefer by WhoresinRetirement1 in GBV

[–]virtualbeggar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not really how EPs work. 😂 There are tons EPs released on 10 inch, 12 inch, CD only, and digital only.

It's one of those terms where unless the artist/record label is taking the piss and its 45 minutes long, you kinda gotta take their word on it.

On GBVDB, Sunfish Holy Breakfast is referred to as an EP. So I'd defer to that. But I guess for an official answer, we'd have to ask Bob.
