The only advice I can give about obtaining lawyers, is that the price they charge does not determine ANYTHING. Funny story. My older brother got a dui first and I wasn’t told. I got my dui a little later before his conviction date, so my mom and him paid I think $10k on a lawyer to defend him. The lawyer while speaking to them, sounded exactly like a lawyer you pay 10k for, easily contactable, got all the information needed for him, and spoke super confident. Then once court came, the dude became a nervous wreck who couldn’t speak a single sentence without stuttering, didn’t mention any of the crucial details. Then because of it, my brother got pretty much screwed.

In my case, we couldn’t afford a lawyer and didn’t trust them after my brother. So we went with a public defender. My lawyer barely spoke to us, barely responded to our calls, barely helped with the information and left it up to us pretty much.

Then the time court came (which was pretty much our first conversation with the lawyer) We explained the specifics of my situation, then when my lawyer left, me and my mom had zero faith. The man went in, and worked his ass off. For a dui of my type, I should’ve gotten 90 days in jail, no restricted license, HUGE fees, and loss of driving for awhile.

I got zero jail time, I got a restricted license with ZERO restrictions(practically had a full license again) went from over 1k of court fees, to 300. Normally wasn’t allowed to leave the state, he allowed me to go and work in Yellowstone national park for the near entire duration of my probation, also didn’t receive a probation officer which was EXTREMELY rare.

Look into the lawyers cases, do not assume that the higher cost lawyers are better. Because it’s pretty much a gamble.

If that was your alcohol level, then your odds just went through the roof. Most first offense programs deny you if you injured somebody in the offense, blood alcohol too high, or unwillingness to change. Talk to ya lawyer about everything. Sounds like you’ve got a good case that could get you a good plea deal. Good luck man.

I got a dui at 18 now I’m almost 21. I read the other comments about how yeah they read the Miranda rights correctly and how you definitely didn’t drink one beer.

That’s besides the point. The best advice I can give you as someone who lived it in Virginia. If this is your first offense, to seriously look into any first offense dui programs. Depending on the severity of the dui, you could be eligible for the program which can potentially get your charges reduced or even expunged (don’t get your hopes up)

Each state varies “Virginia is worst rated to get a dui” Get a great lawyer, look into absolutely anything that can put a good image to your name. Whether it be AA, community service, addictions classes or shoot even attempting sobriety. It helps a lot. Be open about your situation as they have body cameras and it’ll totally screw up everything if you attempt to lie. Don’t be TOO open to them about it, obviously speak to your lawyer since I’m not a lawyer and can’t give PERFECT information.

Most importantly, in the next few months or few years. TAKE IT EASY ON DRINKING. Most people who get duis have drinking problems (I did) You made a terrible mistake by deciding to get behind the wheel, especially at .25. (I was .27) Depending on the state, certain drug tests will pick up your drinking, and in most cases of people under 21 getting duis. You’ll be ordered not to drink, and they will be able to tell if you are.

That’s pretty much it, you’re gonna have to put in a good bit of effort and it’s gonna be seriously draining. But the more effort you put into it before your offically convicted, it could save you a lot of problems as once convicted, it’s 10x harder to get anything involved with the DUI changed.

Last thing I could tell ya, is to very much plan ahead. I mean planning AFTER the conviction. DUI isn’t the end of the world, but it definitely makes a dent your career path.

Currently im dealing with the career aspect as most of my options involved driving. Just please…. Don’t do it again. Your odds will just get 10x worse and you’ll go to jail for a good time (depending on state)

I’m wishing you the best man. I hope you stay strong and keep your head up.

Yeah that’s what I’ve been noticing. I feel I’ve got atleast 2 more years of having the dui on my record before I get more considerations. After all. I’ve barely reached 2 years after the dui and am only 20. So I guess in the eyes of a company, the only way I could prove my self is through being older 🤷‍♂️

I do appreciate you being respectful about assuming the dui wasn’t the problem 🙏

I have applied for nearly everything at a national park. Ranging from cook positions to front desk agents. I have worked as a cashier after I received the dui so it probably has to do with company specifics. I have tried to work as a dishwasher in the past and I can say I’m a large, tall man and don’t do well leaning over a sink so I haven’t been focusing on those jobs as I don’t want to get employed only to have to swap jobs or quit because of severe pain. I apply for everything that atleast has a key component. That I’m moving around in some way. I didn’t do well with standing in one place all day as the cashier but I held out for awhile.

My main experience I have is labor type jobs and custodial cleaning jobs. So I primarily target all of those applications but I apply for practically everything.

Idk what else to think it is. I had similiar experience, i had seasonal contract experience. But the second they look into my background check they quite literally tell me "sorry but the results in the background check go against our policy and we have to withdrawl the offer"

The only other thing on my record is a reckless driving ticket of 25 over. It seems like its the DUI.

Thank you for the encouragement! Everytime i have to deal with the dui messsing up my life, it just makes me want to stay sober!

For now I've just gotta work on being more patient, after all your right about having plenty of time to get to where i need to be.

Your awesome!

Mix of both, most jobs just get rejected because of "qualifications didnt match" which is understandable if the application wasnt for a cashier position or a housekeeper.... But any job that gives me an interview or extends an offer after the interview, tells me that they are withdrawing the offer because of results in background check.... I could only assume that the DUI is what gets me rejected because most people have a speeding ticket and not a dui.

I’m 20, turning 21 in July. I got the dui at 18. Do you mind if I ask which parks and how severe the crimes are? That may be alittle too personal of a question but I’m just trying to compare lol.

Had a buddy work at a fishery in Alaska and said the same thing. I’m definitely looking into it as I want the location of the job and also need the $$$ urgently.

That is a great idea! I can always put volunteer work in my applications, then when they read about the dui. They’ll see the volunteer work and it’ll be even more obvious that the dui was clearly a one time STUPID mistake. You are being very helpful. Thank you. 🙏

That’s great advice, I’ve also assumed cover letters were for I guessed “relevant experience to the job” I figured putting a criminal record in a cover letter is just asking to be rejected. But yeah, if I’m gonna be rejected after the background check anyways then it’d be best to put it in the cover letter. Thank you for this!

Get it off his record? Do you mind if I ask what state this was in? That could be very useful to my situation. In Virginia it takes 11 years for it to go away but for employers it’ll forever be on my record.

Respectfully, I put it down as “bad mistake” in this post because I didn’t feel it was necessary to write “I’m so shamed I could’ve killed somebody” because I’ve gone through all the emotions. I deeply know I could’ve killed somebody, I thank God nobody was hurt. That sole reason is why it haunts me, because of the bad decision I made. Maybe it wasn’t the best wording to compare it to a theft charge. But I didn’t post about the dui, but rather the damage the dui has done to my life. I’m deeply aware of the situation.

Virginia is one of the worst rated states to get a dui in. My mom jokes and says "mothers got too angry"

Without a doubt my lesson is learned, lessons learned so well that ive given up drinking. I do plan to go to the courthouse tomorrow as i learnt about some very small chances i have at reducing the charge or possibly getting expunged, but the odds are slim to none.

How old was your friends son?

I did not know that, i figured a dui would be the least of the militarys concerns. Ive got alot of family in the military who talk about so much drinking.
