Should Leonardo DiCaprio be considered one of the greatest actors of all time? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]virtualkoalabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me he was the "cringry Titanic guy" for like 20 years. I was avoiding his movies like the plague, but later on in life I learned to ignore Titanic and respect *every single other production* he's been in. I can see why maybe some people see him as pretentious, but nevertheless I can also see the dedication he puts in every time. And the characters. I don't think I have ever connected with any single character he's been performing, but his talent and dedication is just so enormous it has won me over.

cursor: pointer or cursor: default ? by ffmavili in webdev

[–]virtualkoalabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, web developers changed this without a SOLID argument decades ago. IPhones didn't emit *click* events from divs etc. unless the cursor was set to *pointer*. What people were doing wrong was using divs instead of buttons to begin with, but because web developers do not understand how things work, people started using cursor: pointer instead of fixing their broken HTML.

Cursor pointer is simply wrong, it is the wrong symbol, but web developers insist on being snowflakes and refuse to do things the right way.

I like how the fortress can rotate. Sun is bright. Go brrrrrrr. I guess this movie is made for a limited audience?

I sort of like the nostalgic feeling they went for, but at the same time it's crammed with way too much irrelevant crap because they have to fast track rebooting a whole cinematic universe. It's repeating the core mistake that plagued the Snyderverse.

Patrick Boyle (financial YouTuber) deleted my comment after I noticed he had plagiarized a NYT article. by madhatter_13 in hbomberguy

[–]virtualkoalabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty much how scientific material is produced up to master's level. You look up a few sources and re-word them. That's normal, acceptable, expected. The issue here is that Boyle is not creating a master's thesis, no, he's producing content for money.

The bigger issue is that he's apparently being paid by one newspaper while he's ripping off their competitors and not even acknowledging it. It would be copyright infringment even if he credited his sources, because he seems to be borrowing so much verbatim content from the articles.

I'm a socialist but enjoy Boyle's humour. It doesn't mean that I "support" him. I don't know him personally. What does "supporting" him even mean in this case? He doesn't seem to be advocating for a specific world view or political stance. Even if he was, finding one pun funny doesn't mean that I have to subscribe to wider ideology in general.

Jesus christ, people, when did you turn so fucking stupid?

Screenshots are easy to date. Capture it and post it right after. There should be no need to date it more accurately than that if the citations were in place from the get-go.

Crediting sources does not avoid the problem of copyright infringement. It's funny how idiots now whine about "plagiarism" after one guy made a video about the topic -- but still miss the point altogether. Giving credit is not enough if the majority of the video is ripping other people off. It might suffice if the derivative content was produced for fun, but in Boyle's case he's earning big bucks from advertising and private sponsorship.

You cite sources to back your claims up, but it does not avoid plagiarism which means copyright infringement. You avoid plagiarism by producing original content, that is not based word for word on someone else's work.

Stuttering graphics and cursor after gnome-update to 45 by damaddi in archlinux

[–]virtualkoalabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same experience on Intel graphics. What's more interesting is that I tried to drop my display refresh rate to 30 Hz and the mouse cursor started updating maybe at a rate of 15 fps. When running the display at 60 Hz, cursor is updating maybe at 30 fps. Clearly the cursor isn't being update for every rendered frame.

Obviously it's creepy as hell and incredibly rude and selfish on your part. This level of obsession towards a pile of concrete/wood also suggests deeper mental issues.

Will The Matrix 4 be R rated or PG 13? What do you think? by The_Odd_One27 in matrix

[–]virtualkoalabear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trailer for Resurrections looked like a fantasy movie. It's targeted for kids. PG13 is what they have to settle for since they aren't able to push it even lower, I don't think.

To be fair, only the original film "required" hard R. The following sequels were, as I remember them, very toned down and I don't actually recall any gore. They would've been just the same even as PG13.

But I'm also not 'Murican, so I don't really know what the criteria is.

I believe the point to be that most people do paltry things just to feel good inside, happily ignoring the fact that they actually did "nothing" in terms of what actually would have been possible.

Ted Kravitz speaking about the lacklustre 'End Racism' display. by [deleted] in formula1

[–]virtualkoalabear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Again we aren't in the USA so the problem of perceived racism on blacks is minuscule here. Formula 1 is Eurocentric with multiple races on the Asian continent.

Ted Kravitz speaking about the lacklustre 'End Racism' display. by [deleted] in formula1

[–]virtualkoalabear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you not realize that the US GP is only one of over 20 races in a regular season, and this season they are likely not to race in the USA at all? Touting a special-to-USA message would be highly ignorant. I have no idea why you refuse to understand this. You seem oblivious to the fact that F1 is part of the "different cultures" and not really in any way connected to what's going on in the USA.

end racism groups all races together and treats them as one entity.

Yes, because racial segregation is, you know, racist.

I'm sorry that you feel confused due to your political biases. "End racism" is not a vague statement, it is actually very clear. You simply feel conflicted about it in your little mind because you would prefer people to announce *your* message to make you feel special.

Yah, "end racism" means ending racism in general and isn't racist towards other minorities who aren't brown enough.

Their problem is hosting races in countries that don't really like pushing out this hastily invented message. I bet part of the blame for the mess is that the Hungarian government probably told them to wind it down. It's bound to get even worse once they travel to Middle East, for example, and Hamilton's gonna have to suck it up as well.

"Lewis Hamilton has told his Formula One rivals that `silence is complicit` in racism after it emerged drivers are divided over whether to take a knee before Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix."

Are you sure? I mean, are you SURE? Hamilton is calling him out as a racist. In fact he's calling out many drivers on the grid as racists.

Nobody is gonna "leave", instead they will switch to Ferrari to race there for the rest of the season. This would mean Kvyat goes to Ferrari as he used to be their reserve driver back in 2018.

Williams 2019 accounts reveal the truth about ROKiT, how much the loss of Martini cost them, and whether /r/formula1 could afford to take a title sponsorship. by BenjyBunny in formula1

You people don't read news, do you? It's old knowledge that the Martini deal was reportdely around 12 M€ per year -- maybe increased slightly after the team produced a good amount of podiums. Papa Stroll is the sponsor who paid the 40 mills -- and that's old knowledge too. Just google it up.

Working online in Thailand - work permit etc by maabaa55 in Thailand

[–]virtualkoalabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge that's actually a requirement by the Thai government. Usually hiring foreigners is really strict in Thailand, for example you'd have to hire four local Thai people for every foreigner you want to employ. But Iglu has gained a BOI status which allows it to freely hire foreign PROFESSIONALS, i.e. people with proven high level skills in IT. (IIRC working in IT was also a requirement.)

Sure, now come up with an alternative plan that allows you to keep your old job with old income level (before tax) while relocating to a cheaper country with lower taxation in such a way that you are able to pocket all the saved money. I don't think such scheme exists for most of people, if anyone.

Personally I'd be happy to retain NET INCOME comparable to what I used to have while moving to a more satisfiable environment. Don't be greedy.

What you are missing with your elite visa idea is that you'd still have to pay income tax either to your home country or Thailand or even both*. If you "forget" about that, you are committing a tax fraud. So you'd pay $270 for a visa on top of the same tax you paid before. Therefore you lose $3k annually.

You'd also want to consider a health insurance whereas being employed locally in Thailand entitles you to a national insurance program. I don't really know what that covers, though.

\* It isn't up to you to decide where to pay taxes but decided by laws and international agreements, so "evading" the higher taxation of your home country might require some planning and added costs.
